Moderators PowerButchi Posted May 11, 2020 Moderators Share Posted May 11, 2020 Ian Woosnams old golf club is in the news at the moment. Llanymynech straddles the border, 16 holes in Wales and 2 In England. They're thinking of opening as it's run by Golf England.Ā

Moderators PowerButchi Posted May 11, 2020 Moderators Share Posted May 11, 2020 It's funny how most decent golf courses have tennis courts on site, isn't it?Ā

Isn't social distancing pretty much theĀ appeal of those sports? Selfishly being 1) Scottish and 2) a golfer this is one of the things that has wound me up no end up here.Ā Folk barely move out of the way when out walking, queues at supermarkets are not 6 feet apart, in the shop itself folk lean over and shop as normal so why that is allowed and golf isn't beggars belief. Scottish golf have stated single tee times at clubs i.e. you can only play by yourself. My club are implementing extended gaps between tee times (15 minutes instead of 7) so the chances of encountering anyone up close is virtually zero.Ā Public courses might be different depending on the council but to say we can walk as often as you like knowing full well that's less safe than being on the course really doesn't make sense.Ā Also, more flippantly, the standard of some golfers I know is such that even if we teed off together we'd be 200 yards apart anyway because their drives were honking so skill-wise it'd be easier to social distance.Ā Edit - having seen the last two comments I await pelters for playing golf... In his opposition speech tonight he should've been furious and completely ripped Johnsons speech apart. Instead he sounded mildly inconvenienced, like he'd just left the shop and forgot the eggs. There's no sincerity to it.. He's every inch the lawyer. He's prepared his case, and delivered it in an articulateĀ fashion,Ā but I don'tĀ feelĀ like he cares. He needs some fire. Corbyn sounded like he gave a shit and the papers had to haul him over the coals because when he spoke out he sounded like he believed in what he was saying, which was flummoxing May and Johnson. Starmer is a career politician who's found himself in a nice cushy number until either the party splinters around him or he manages to silver tongueĀ his way into governmentĀ and the mask slips. Having said that, let's see what happens when this is over and politics gets back to something resembling normal.
Paid Members Chris B Posted May 11, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted May 11, 2020 Yeah, I want Starmer to show more sincerity, but I think there's a lot he's sincere about. I always found the McLibel case interesting, so I was fascinated when I learned how he was involved with it. And on top of that, when I saw him speak at one of the Brexit protests, I thought he came across really well. I liked Corbyn quite a lot, and I think a lot of the flak against Starmer is frustration about how Corbyn was treated.Ā

It's already happening with certain cornersĀ of the press attacking him for confronting somebody who was filming him clapping for the NHS the other day. I won't link to articles, butĀ it's the usual suspects. He's proposing closing tax loopholes and higher taxes for the top 5% of earners, The press will find something,Ā and hound him relentlessly. Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted May 11, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted May 11, 2020 I just feel it was a massive missed opportunity for Starmer, more than anything. This is probably the first major speech most of the public have seen of him. His line of 'coronavirus has taken so much away from us' was delivered like he'd just missed the bus. He had an open goal after Johnsons pisspoor speech last nightĀ and fucked it right up. My Dads gone back to work today. Even though pretty much all of the family have advised him not too - he suffers from asthma and should be self-isoating until at least the end of June, really - he's felt as though he has no other choice due to being self-employed. He's only been self-employed for around 6 months so none of the government schemes or grants apply to him. He's pretty much had no income for 3 months now, and the daft old sod won't apply for Universal Credit. Bit of a shit-show all around really. Looks as soft as shit to me. I see zero leadership qualities in him. The socialist who had his millionaire status removed from his wiki page, prior to his election. There was no point to him pushing for an exit strategy & he knew it. So for me, that was fake. All you were ever going to get was a fudge and that's precisely what happened. They know we're fucked if people don't return to work & they also know it's a fucking killng field out there. So, no they aren't going to be specific, because that'd lead to accountability. Common sense won't work, as a large % of the population are fucking idiots. Get ready for lockdown 2...or lockdown 1 cont'd, in my case.
