Fortnite is fun enough, and each match is over pretty quickly, so it's got a strong 'one more game' vibe going on. PUBG is the most exhilarating game I've ever played. Nothing's ever come close to the tension of getting to the top 10, inside an increasingly shrinking play-zone, and you're hiding in the shade of a tree, wondering if someone's watching you from half a mile away through a sniper scope. I think it's the 'realism' of it, by which I mean, no music, just ambient noise and the footsteps/gunfire/vehicle sounds of other players; and quick, brutal deaths, which often come the instant you step outside the building you've been crouching in for 20 minutes. Even sneaking into a building, wondering if there's someone hiding in there waiting to pop you as soon as the door opens, is incredibly stressful. No lie, and rather shamefully, the handful of times I've won, by the end, my heartrate and adrenaline was going so crazy, it's I could do to use the controller, as my fingers had gone completely numb. Great premise, looks shit, handles really poorly, buggy as fuck. It feels like a fan mod for a game that's not very good in the first place. I really gave it a good go, too. I wanted to like it. Feels very similar to other open world games (destroy settlements, complete missions, collect things, liberate cities etc) but I love that system. It's tried and tested, and although it's not reinventing the wheel, it's really satisfying and it works. I'm also emotionally invested now, just after two hours of play time. A neat little feature is that you hear a voicemail message from the characters whenever you hover over mission icons on the map screen. There's this one at a certain location, obviously very early on in the game, which was so distressing to me that I am now 100% determined to bring down these vile nut-job bastards and burn them alive. I don't regret it either, as the Saints Row series is bloody excellent and is now one of my favorites, which is a nice turn of events as I always ignorantly passed it off as a shit GTA clone before hand. So far I've spent time at the hostess bar which employs Saki Akai, bumped into Kazuchika Okada (who sticks out like a sore thumb even by series standards) and been asked what I think of a porn stars boobs, in a ridiculous "live chat" mini game.
