cobra_gordo Posted June 15 Posted June 15 On more than one occasion I've had my guitar completely cut out at a gig. Wireless died once, I've killed three amplifiers mid-set over the years. One of the most fun gigs we ever played my amp died on the second to last song. We're a three piece so we carried on, bass became the lead instrument and I just did my regular vocal over the top. I wouldn't cop to it in person, and would instead talk about liking Blood Incantation or Cryptopsy or whoever else it's okay to like. But, bugger me, as an occasional palate cleanser it doesn't get much better than some soppy sod in fancy dress singing about fairies in a musical theatre voice whilst 4 very capable musicians rip absurd solos and double bass pedal fills. I'm going to see Fellowship on Saturday and I CANNOT WAIT. Quote

Rhapsody (of Fire) are over here early next year and I’m intrigued how their show is going to work in a venue like Rebellion in Manchester and what kind of crowd it’s going to attract Quote

I lost count of the number of ibuprofen pills I’ve taken since Thursday - I should be rattling like a maraca. Quick (long!) overview: Five - outstanding but then I’m biased. The tent was spilling out from all directions and I’m glad they had such a reaction. Caskets - better turnout from the last time I saw them (weird student venue with about 20 people) but the lead singer needs some sort of therapy. Tends to get very emotional which affects the vocals. Still enjoyed though and was very close to the front of the Opus stage which made me feel 17 again. Pendulum - OK but I only know one song. Sounded good though. Sleep Theory - I liked their energy, I need to listen to them more. I gave them a listen before going but nothing really stuck. Cypress Hill - brilliant. Saw them play the Game On festival at the Millennium Dome in 2003 and they still know how to work up a crowd. I loved that they mixed in some Beastie Boys and ended with a bit of Jump Around. Limp Bizkit - I think I would have been more excited if I hadn’t seen them at Wembley so recently. They were OK but didn’t really blow me away. Some guy broke his leg in the pit so the gig was stopped for about 20mins. As @d-d-d-dAz said, Fred Durst was very professional about it and kept some commentary going to people knew what was happening. Some bands would’ve just walked off stage and let security get on with it, leaving the crowd to get impatient. Overall, they were good though. Thornhill - my friend keeps going on about these and I definitely need to listen more. It was an early start (11am on Saturday) but they sounded great and full of energy. Again, I got right down the front of the Apex stage for this but didn’t feel 17 for long when the moshing started and I realised I’m too delicate for such shenanigans these days. We Came as Romans - listened to these while getting food. Not bad, must listen more. Bush - not fussy. I thought it sounded recorded rather than live, Gavin Rossdale’s vocals were too breathy and clean. His face also looks like it’s made of wax and, despite going for a wander in the pit for almost an entire song, he didn’t break a sweat. And they didn’t play Swallowed so I wasn’t happy. Architects - highlight of my weekend. I bloody love this band. Security were being dicks though and they had to stop the show about 3 times and walked off to try and sort it. Not entirely sure what was going on but it was annoying. Great show when it did happen though, they’re such a tight band and Sam’s vocals never fail to impress. Five stars, will definitely see again. Guns N’ Roses - meh. Saw them in Hyde Park not so long ago so wasn’t bothered about seeing them again. And definitely not for 3.5hrs! It was such a waste, they should’ve had Architects on the main stage before them and given GNR a shorter set. The overcrowding for Architects was ridiculous and they should have been on a bigger stage. I was absolutely frozen by 10pm on Saturday so I got some photos of Slash as we passed, bought a giant hot chocolate in the guest area and went back to the hotel to a warm bed. Dogstar - well, it was Keanu, what more can I say? They mostly did tracks off the new album which was a bit disappointing as I’ve not had chance to listen to it properly yet. And they didn’t do a Ramones cover which they did in Kentish Town and dedicated it to me so it was obviously going to be downhill after that! Bloodywood - absolutely fantastic! Loved this set and definitely a highlight for me. I was meant to see them back last year but was ill and couldn’t make it. Another one I need to listen to more. The Plot in You - seen them a couple of times now but nothing’s sticking for me. They’re OK. Ash - definitely felt like a teenager again seeing this band - and I was right against the barrier for this one. They played all the classics - Goldfinger, Oh Yeah, Girl From Mars and Kung Fu (my favourite) and I loved it. Never got to see them back in the day so this made up for it. Bad Omens - just not arsed. Saw them at Alexandra Palace too and I’m just not getting the hype. Linkin Park - again, saw them at Wembley last year so wasn’t overly excited. They put on a good show and sounded great though. Emily seemed to struggle at first but it was really windy so the sound might not have been great. Don’t really feel that they ended with a bang though, not sure why. I just wasn’t left with that finale buzz like usual. Overall a great weekend, thoroughly enjoyed and I’m so glad it didn’t rain. I like that the Avalanche stage has been upsized and that the tents were open at the sides but it felt like much more walking. It also felt like more of a struggle to get through crowds, everyone had a chair so pathways were blocked and I felt like I was always shuffling in a queue to get anywhere. I did upwards of 65k steps according to my phone. Also gutted I missed Drowning Pool after they swapped stages but didn’t update the app or resend notifications. And wouldn’t have minded seeing Skindred but I was on the other side of the site. I’ve now swapped ibuprofen for Monster. Thanks for reading (if you did). Update for anyone following my 'I didn't go America so spent all the money on gigs'; I went to see This Will Destroy You on Saturday. Pretty rubbish. First track was good, and then everything after was just more of the same. Two medical emergencies during the set. The Scala is weird, it's quite hot but they pump in this really cold artificial air; I think it makes you feel a bit woozy as it occasionally wofts over your otherwise boiling body. I came to Southampton tonight to see Elder and Blood Incantation. Elder were good, not great, and Blood Incantation were absolutely phenomenal. You get the impression they're a bit more cerebral than their crowd at times (they don't really seem a 'lob a beer in the air, have a mosh' band). Top marks. Never been the 1865 before, but good venue with great sound. Quote

My friend works for Live Nation so I got a guest weekend wristband but not sure exactly how much the hotel was. Really nice though, a 10min drive on Thursday night from the Black (Metal Meadow) car park but they made the road one-way afterwards so it took a lot 35-45mins on Friday and Saturday but over an hour last night with everyone leaving. We did RIP camping last year in the Sleepy Hollow tents that look like a garlic bulb. It was great what with the weather being a scorcher but I’m so glad we weren’t camping this year. It was so cold at night that I think I’d have looked like Jack Nicholson at the end of The Shining by morning. I went by myself in 2024 and stayed at the Quorn Grange Hotel (through Booking.com). Bit further but it was lovely and so cheap that I thought they’d made a mistake! Quote

Almost every power metal band I listen to I cannot believe how bad it is. Sabaton, Powerwolf etc. I hate it. The one power metal band that I genuinely love is Blind Guardian. Quote

They're my gateway Post-Rock band, and I'd have loved to see them to tick them off the list, but the price kinda put me off, along with some things that I'd heard about their live performances here and there. Maybe I'll get to them as part of a festival down the line instead. I'm considering going to The Dirty Nil+Bruise Control next week though for the Brum leg of their tour, just as a replacement for the FOMO I'll get from 2000 Trees this year. I was looking forward to seeing them on the Wednesday, and I'd still like to see if they live up to the live hype. On the subject of bands using tape at shows, I saw Underoath in 2008 or 2009 and even back then they had some of the vocals being played on a backing track. It completely takes you out of it, and the experience put me off making any effort to see Underoath since then. I just don't see the point. Codeseven tried to defend it on a podcast recently where they couldn't afford a bassist or drummer on tour with them so they filled in with the backing track, and I don't want to sound like a cunt (well, actually I do) but if you can't afford to tour with the instruments you need or can't be arsed to work your songs around the limitations, then don't go on fucking tour. I had a power metal phase in my teens (even then I thought most of it was shite) but BG are pretty much the only ones that stuck with me outside of the odd track from Hammerfall, Rhapsody etc. Edit for unrelated moaning. Went to Glasgow on Saturday to see Midnight who were co-headlining with Voivod. The promotors posted earlier in the day that Midnight were on last, so we took our time getting there as neither of us care about Voivod.
