There's a bloke I used to be friends with on Facebook - he was a mate of my brother, met at my brother's first job; he was a Guardian reader, Beach Boys fanatic, and really into his comedy, got my brother into reading Viz, and had aspirations to be a cartoonist and/or stand-up comic; I never saw his stand-up show, but apparently he absolutely tanked at Edinburgh. Over the last ten years or so he's just gradually gone off the deep end into the slightly more respectable end of the far-right - all very serious concerns about freedom of speech and whatnot. I kept him on my Facebook friends for a while because I found it instructive to actually see how he ended up where he was from where he had started out - you could see his frustration at old comedy being called offensive turn to "you can't say anything any more" to "anti-woke" bollocks, and his very early 2000s brand of angry online atheism gradually shift away from performative angry at Christianity to constantly raging about Islam. He went to a "Free Speech Rally" in London, and had a photo taken there of him with Gavin McInnes of the Proud Boys - a few years ago that seems to have been quietly deleted from his Facebook; I wonder if he recognised it might impact his newfound career as a local newspaper opinion columnist, or if he actually recognised he might have gone too far and started pulling back - but because he's a guy who's never admitted he's wrong, if it was out of contrition, you'd never know it because he never actually acknowledged or apologised for it. Anyway, the point is, as this guy was going further and further into this incredibly online right-wing ecosystem, he posted a Tweet making some really exaggerated "leftist" point - if memory serves it was a trans rights thing. It was very obviously a known parody account, using the kind of tropes and language you'd only believe if you'd never actually encountered anyone talking about trans rights or making any kind of even vaguely left-wing argument, and only seen the way they were misrepresented and parodied by the right on social media. He posted it saying something like, "see, this is how far the Left have gone!". My last interaction with him before finally deleting him from my friends list was to point out that it was a parody account. His reply was, "well, the fact that you can't even tell any more shows how bad the left really are!". To which I responded, "I could tell, though, I just did. I think you mean you couldn't tell". But it couldn't be that he was wrong, him being fooled by it still had to mean that he was right and the point he was making was still valid. Quote

Anecdotally, something that shows the temptation to hitch one's star to AI — when we were taken over, the manager of Digital Asset Management team made it really clear that he was interested in AI.
