And the simple answer is because that's the story they've chosen to tell in the way they've chosen to tell it. Otherwise some books could be one page instead of hundreds and you'd end up with damn short films and TV shows. So yeah as with any of those things you choose to go along for the journey or you don't. It's a choice we all make every time. Quote
Snitsky's back acne Posted March 2, 2025 Posted March 2, 2025 All the people saying they saw a Cena heel turn coming. Yeah, maybe in the few minutes beforehand where he was in the ring and you thought 'They wouldn't ...nah, course they wouldn't...it would be cool though....nah, it's not happening' and then they do That's not 'seeing it coming'. I refuse to let the absolutely nonsensical and unnecessary inclusion of Travis Scott ruin the moment either. Quote
Members SuperBacon Posted March 2, 2025 Members Posted March 2, 2025 One thing that I don't think has been mentioned was that lovely moment between Cena "I missed you" and Punk "I missed you too" which genuinely moved me. I hope they have a match before the end of John's run. Also, I kept being distracted by the red and white striped football shirt in the front row, which I finally worked out was an Olympiakos one. Always a shirt nonce. Quote

I don't like The Rock, I don't think this stuff makes any sense or stands up to any sort of investigation. Which of course it doesn't, because he's making it up as he goes along. 'It's not real' doesn't stand up for me as an argument, as I don't think that's a good enough reason for something to not make sense. Cena had to win for that angle to work, so for me - with all the added context of not liking The Rock - meant I didn't love it as much as some. But that's fine, other times I'll overlook illogical booking when it's involving people I really like. And, all that said, I'm still buzzing for a Cena heel run as he'll be great. Quote
Doog Posted March 2, 2025 Posted March 2, 2025 (edited) Unreal turn, annoyingly had it ruined on a football forum, in a thread talking about our cup final against Liverpool weirdly, which definitely ranks up there as one of the strangest places a spoiler has popped up! Anyway, makes the WrestleMania main event a lot more interesting. I see Cena has already gone to Africa to continue eith a film which is a shame as that first promo on RAW tomorrow would've been epic. Hopefully he's back soon and can be more full time as a heel, be a shame if we finally get the heel run and he's only on once a month. Edited March 2, 2025 by Doog Quote

He could do the original Hollywood Rock gimmick of sending in VT promos from various film sets from across the world. I'd be in for that. Quote

You can be the Nostrodamus of the Neckbreaker then. The Mystic Meg of the Moss Covered Three Handled Family Gradunza! Only caught the clip of the Cena turn but it looked well done. Never thought they’d actually pull the trigger on that. I also liked that they never hit the music before the show went off the air. Think it would’ve killed the moment a little bit if ‘The Time Is Now’ started blaring and it just felt more impactful to me with the show ending with no music, not much being said by the commentators and just the sound of the crowd reacting to it all. Good stuff. Edited March 2, 2025 by wandshogun09 Quote
AndyUK Posted March 2, 2025 Posted March 2, 2025 Wow! Well, they've got Mania back on track. Cody v Cena didn't do much for me as I'm not a massive fan of these heatless face v face main events and wasn't sure how good the match would actually be, but they've just turned it on its head. You're looking at a huge main event now where there are limitless possibilities. I reckon it might be a bit like that HBK turn on Hogan where it only lasts a few weeks, and his redemption comes at Mania or something, but it's going to be very interesting to see where they go now. Can we get that moment of Austin coming out to neutralise The Rock this year too? They've still got that up their sleeve after he couldn't make it last time. Great show though, had a lot of fun with it. Sami v KO was brilliant, the only thing that was missing was blood which they were obviously saving for the closing angle. The Mens Chamber was also great, surreal watching Punk and Cena together and reinacting MITB 2011 after all these years. It does look like we're getting that Reigns v Rollins v Punk triple threat though doesn't it? Let's see if they can do something interesting with it. Quote

Though if he could get Marty on WWE TV, I’ll take everything back I’ve said about the Rock this year! Quote

Not everyone thinks like you though, I mean in life and in stories. The amount of times I listen to or read complaints about stories that amount to 'I don't understand why X did this and thus this story is flawed or broken', it really boils me piss. My daughter and my workmates do shit that I wouldn't all the fucking time, that's what life is. I haven't watched WWE in years but I've watched the last 2 PPV's because they've been ostensibly free. I can't claim to have seen the Cena turn coming weeks ago but when Cody came out and knowing they were doing some sort of angle with the Rock, I did think 'Cena's turning here'. I've watched wrestling for a long old time, I know Cena wanted the heel turn years ago but Vince talked him out of it. In that moment it made sense. I don't like that it all revolves around The Rock but especially in Cena's last year, it makes a whole heap of sense to me. I don't think understanding any of that makes anyone mystic, but like I said not everyone thinks the same. Edited March 2, 2025 by BrodyGraham Quote

My daughter and my workmates do shit that I wouldn't all the fucking time, that's what life is. This is *slightly* different though, as yes human motives can be unpredictable. So to that degree, maybe I've been harsh on The Rock to date as maybe the reason he's been all over the place is because that's the story they're trying to tell, of a deeply insecure old wrestler who thinks he's 'the final boss', and so he has to constantly shape shift to try and find his place in the new world and remain relevant. I doubt it, but they could be. But the structural foundations of stories has to be realistic. Not how people behave, but how their situation and environments behave. Cena having to win for this to work isn't down to unpredictable human behaviour, that's the stroke of a writers pen jumping a few points just to get where they needed to. And, like I say, it's not terminal and it probably didn't upset many people. I just don't like The Rock anyway, think he's always chucking illogical shit at the wall and this was an example to me of a really illogical written story to wedge him into the main event. It'll be great, of that I'm sure. Rock is capable of being good when he isn't writing and editing his own shit, and Cody and Cena are brilliant so yeah, fine. And the angle was well executed by Cena and Cody, too, so plenty of promise and hope. It didn't help that I was on a downer anyway because Seth Rollins just won't fuck off. Paid Members ReturnOfTheMack Posted March 2, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 2, 2025 (edited) I absolutely saw the Cena turn coming. But that's because I made the mistake of turning on Facebook this morning before I checked the show. Bastard idiot. Still, biggest surprise turn in years. Up there with Hogan, and Austin, in terms of how big it feels. Edit: I should add how brilliant Cena played his facial reactions, and how insanely inhuman Cody appears. And that just proves the state of it. It was obvious with Cena staying in the ring that him turning was predictable at that point. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t good, nor wasn’t the right thing. And it’s definitely what the Road to WrestleMania needed. But it wasn’t the most shocking turn in wrestling history. I guess I don't understand the thought process behind coming in this thread and, as everyone shows their excitement and enthusiasm for an angle like this, going, "Oh it was so obvious! It's not one of the biggest turns ever! I could see it coming a million miles away!" What does it achieve, doing that? Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted March 2, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 2, 2025 There had been speculation about something happening with Cena when he did that interview and said him main eventing Mania and winning 17 was "best for business", but I thought it'd just be the return of Thugonomics for one last big nostalgia run. This heel Cena could be an interesting one. I wonder whether after Cody retains at Mania and they do a passing of the torch we get the Rock - Cena rubber match at Summerslam or in Saudi Arabia (thrice in a lifetime). Quote
