Anna Jay getting matches for both women's titles

Yeah, what's up with that? I'd understand if she'd suddenly become really over or stepped it up in the ring a lot but I don't get it.

It's a shit deal for Anna Jay because she just lost that run with Mariah, so if she loses to Mone as well, you might as well fuck her off TV if you have no follow-up from that. If Mone is keeping the belt because it's near the time of that Japan show thing they're doing they might want to have it on her for that (I don't care). However with the Stardom connection thing, maybe they'll have Anna beat Mone. Either way they should be making a proper deal out of the fact Anna Jay didn't win the Women's champ, but she still Mariah May in a match. Make a big deal out of that at least, otherwise you just give someone a shot at two separate titles and make them look a prick losing both... To heels... Whilst being a baby-face.

So is Kamile gone now? Eh, she'll have more time to tweet her stupid abortion opinions I guess. She ended being the new Mel for the newer AEW viewer.

Kamille has been terribly miss managed since arriving there.

Her opinions and everything to one side to the average dynamite viewer she came in, they kept having her wear heels to be taller, which is fair enough she's a big powerhouse for the women's division, they gave her a few wins against jobbers/enhancement (sorry dustin) in some weird space version of faarooqs old blue armour gimmick. Still trying to build her.

Then very quickly they made her this bumbling idiot of a bodyguard, really made her look silly in some promos, and then talked down to by mone to only quit and walk out.

It just seems like the worst bodyguard and wrestler storyline I can think of and due to such little build I don't think there would be any great interest in a kamille v mone match which is surely why you set this angle up in the first place.

On the other hand - she shit the bed in her two showcase singles matches and maybe they thought the upside of keeping her around with the hope she improved wasn't worth the effort. I don't think it's any huge loss either way.

Is Hayter based in the US now? It seems a real waste of time and effort to fly her in for these tiny interview segments if she’s still living over here.

Yes, she lives in Florida now.

Anna Jay has definitely improved but bringing her back from her loan to Japan, having her win a couple of matches, and then slinging her quickly in a world title garbage match - which she lost. And had absolutely no story or build-up behind. What the fuck is the point of that? There's just no sense to almost any of the booking in AEW and that's why I find it far easier to enjoy just watching the PPVs because the TV is bloody awful. Then at least you're just expecting and getting no context wrestling matches.

Not strictly true Dev. She got the title match after she pinned Mariah May in title eliminator match. So there was a reason for it, But I’ll agree that the overall effect hasn’t been great for her.

Also if you can just ban outside interference then why wouldn't you do it for all matches.

My internal head-canon for this is that the promoter's job isn't to monitor a strict set of rules. It's their job to provide the most exciting show possible. This is why heels generally don't get fired, and factions are allowed a bit more free-reign sometimes. Because the money is in grudge matches, return matches and violence. If it were purely a sporting show, we wouldn't get that.

So, fines are light, even for fairly serious infractions. Someone burned someone else's house down, but they can both fight at the PPV? Brilliant!

However, that same promoter wants to keep something like the Continental Classic separate and special - so there are particular rules brought in for that. And the wrestlers and factions are aware that it's not just the referee saying this - it's the promoter and the guy signing their cheques.

Another reason why Lucha Underground was so great because stuff like this wasn't head-canon, the GM character Dario Cueto was incredibly open about how much he loved violence, insanity and putting on a crazy show to appease the fans so they could book any old mad bollocks and it always made sense within the internal logic of the show.

Well that's even worse!

AEW used to be so good at making things matter.

This is the big one for me. I remember in the early days, something would happen every few weeks which would just stick in your mind, because it wasn't like everything else. Moxley and Omega going through a glass table, Darby being thrown down the stairs, an Inner Circle vignette, that kind of thing. But at some point it started to become a bit "this moment, now this moment, now this moment", everything needed to have some dramatic ending, every interview needed to leave someone doing that conflicted glare into the distance. Which quite quickly led into diminishing returns.

Probably hit the sweet spot a year or two in. Or I'm misremembering, and the moments just landed better when people were there and the lights were on.
