Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted December 11, 2024 Paid Members Posted December 11, 2024 I've not had internet for over two weeks so it's taking me an age to catch up with AEW. Finally watched last weeks Dynamite and just wanted to say I fucking love the Continental Classic for the second year in a row. AEW hasn't been smooth sailing lately and there's still a ton of issues, but when the matches are this good it's very easy for me to overlook all of that. Quote
Big Bully Busick Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 This death riders stuff... Bit naff is it for a direction of a company feud 4 guys that that buy their clothes from Burtons and a woman nobody cares about taking over Just put the belt on hangman for Christ's sake Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted December 11, 2024 Paid Members Posted December 11, 2024 Yeah the Mox murder angles are getting a bit of a Dean Ambrose stink on them. The problem with starting an angle off with a murder is there's no way to escalate it so it either peters out or you just repeat it (in this case it's more murder and attempted murder) and it loses all shock value and becomes repetitive and dull. This story has done both. Quote
Paid Members Lion_of_the_Midlands Posted December 11, 2024 Paid Members Posted December 11, 2024 When you add in that Moxley is shite in the first place you are really struggling. The best part of his shtick is his promo but even that is in the dirt when he is the one to provide the content. He needs a strong editor to say no to his constant need for excess. He's basically WCW Vince Russo at this point when it comes to restraint. It's the old "If less is more imagine how much more more more will be" It turns out that more is less as the returns diminish. This story has done both. It was working to a point because the plastic bag angle happened on PPV, and couldn't be replayed on TV. But then they just did it again on the next PPV. And then because they wanted to top that, they did the pouring bleach down the throat spot. Again, it's a transgression of norms, and can't be repeated on TV, so there's something there - until they tease doing it again in a backstage angle on TV, at which point it all starts to look very silly. It's the classic Attitude Era problem. Once you start having people do all sorts of crazy shit outside of the ring, it becomes less and less plausible that pinning the villain in a wrestling match is significant enough payback for their actions. Swerve and Hangman managed to thread that needle, but I remain unconvinced that Moxley will be able to. Quote

This story has done both. It’s a shame they wasted their ‘Tony Khan gets attacked’ angle on Jack Perry, as the most logical thing for Moxley’s crew to do - if it’s ’their company now’ is to assault Tony Khan. Follow the bag angle up with Khan coming down to suspend them, Moxley and co assaulting him, and refusing to go anywhere and at least there’s been an attempt at repercussions. You could write around the holes - have them confront the cowardly Young Bucks post-attack, forcefully saying ‘there’s no suspension, is there?’, only for the Jacksons to back down and agree - that kinda thing. The thing that frustrates me about this whole storyline is that the potential for this to be not only good, but fantastic, is clearly there. However, the many, many missteps have squandered something which could have put AEW on the path for a hot streak. Quote
Paid Members Jesse Posted December 11, 2024 Paid Members Posted December 11, 2024 I just think it's the kind of angle that's destined to fail in AEW as well because to make it work you have to bend the whole show towards it. I was in favour of it early for the reasons you mentioned and it seemed like that was exactly what it was promising - that anything else going on would be coloured by this angle. Not in a 'Team AEW' vs DeathRiders way, but just that you have a group targeting people and willing to go to a different level should require everyone to have an eye on it. You can get around the inability to go back to that level of violence because the reason it worked was surprise. Bryan wasn't expecting it, nobody was, and now people are so they're watching their backs or moving in groups. The thing AEW used to love, everyone having a group of mates so any match that might involve one of them you can have 3 or 4 others out there just in case. Then you can go to that level again at a PPV (which I thought the OC match did well) to keep the threat open, and then have them dethroned soon after by whoever you want your new top guy to be for a chunk of 2025 so you don't run the risk of it lingering too long and morphing into the endless heel faction stuff that can make WWE such a chore to watch when they end up in it. Frustrating, and like much of post-Daily's Place AEW of there being an interesting idea somewhere in there but with an execution so lacklustre you're almost rewarded for not watching the weekly TV. DavidB6937 Posted December 12, 2024 Author Posted December 12, 2024 Well I've found something that upset me more than MJF going back to a heel. Timeless ? Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted December 12, 2024 Paid Members Posted December 12, 2024 I've seen some dumb shit ideas in wrestling and will see some more. But taking one of the most original and interesting characters in modern wrestling history, getting hugely over with her, and then ditching her for the persona that nobody gave two shits about in her WWE and AEW stints is right down there. Why don't they put Dustin Rhodes on Dynamite next as Black Reign. Quote
Paid Members Lion_of_the_Midlands Posted December 12, 2024 Paid Members Posted December 12, 2024 The best bit of that was Thunder Rosa holding up a WTF sign, because that's exactly what I was thinking. The tag match with OC, Jay Shite, Pac and Mox was both stupid and predictable. I think it was Good Pat that said when a heel does something so bad that getting pinned in a wrestling match isn't enough to make up for it, well here we had Cassidy waiting to tag in like it was any other match and not his chance to get revenge on the people who tried to poison him to death. Stupid. Mind you not as stupid as the gentle face rubbing that Mox gave Jay White when he had him in the corner. I haven't seen knees that bad since those Kenta Kobashi x-rays. Then there was the predictable part, the run in from Hangman. They might as well have got Thunder Rosa to hold that WTF sign up again. Quote
Paid Members Supremo Posted December 12, 2024 Paid Members Posted December 12, 2024 What’s the opposite of, “Timeless,”? I think it’s, “shite.” Quote
Guest Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 I thought Timeless was a stupid bloody idea in the first few weeks, so I'm going to reserve judgement on Toni's latest character arc until we see a few more weeks of it. Quote
The King of Old School Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 Time to move on, the Timeless gimmick was brilliant while it lasted but it always had a short shelf life. Hopefully she can be more interesting this time around than the generic babyface she was last time. Plus she can always have another breakdown a bit later and revert back to it if absolutely necessary. Quote
