There was so many pieces from TV Offal that i would randomly remember years later. His delivery on it always reminded me of a proto-Charlie Brooker, filled with disdain for the content he was showing. His columns in the Mirror were always worth a read as well. I'll have to dig out my Dads Private Eye collections as I had no idea he wrote for them.

There was a bit on a Brooker show where he was talking to a stooge about critics or something, the script went went along the lines of “Charlie, it was similar to TV Offal, you know, Victor Lewis Smith”

“No”

”You’d like him, he’d slate things with such venom….”

”Yeah yeah can you move on please” (Looks nervously at camera)

I thought it was a nice way of acknowledging his style of broadcasting owed a lot to VLS.

EDIT. been reliably informed the man said to Brooker “He’s a rich man’s you”

Lots to like about VLS, he did some truly funny and inventive stuff, but to go all Lance Storm, I could never properly warm to him. Probably his fucking hair.

"The Beatles are dying in the wrong order" one of the funniest quotes of all time imho.

VLS was also responsible for the myth that Captain Pugwash had characters called Master Bates & Roger the Cabinboy.

This one sideswiped me.  I have one of his CD’s which still makes me piss myself even after hundreds of listens.
