AEW All Out 2021 - September 5th

What the hell happened to Riho? Was distracted but it sounded like there was some sort of fuck up.

Other than the final stretch the Casino Battle Royal was probably the low point for me. At least Wight/QT was short.

Excellent show but to be honest I was struggling a little during the main even. Closing segment woke me up though.

* Miro/Kingston was a  great opener and there’s plenty of mileage left in the feud. Incredible how over Kingston was, the crowd were so behind him and wanted him to win. None of that “fight forever!” or “both these guys!” bullshit, a clear face and a clear heel, great stuff

* Moxley/Kojima was fine, but definitely had the feel of “give Moxley something to do”. Then Minoru Suzuki’s music started, so that was 10/10, downgraded to 9/10 for Excalibur & JR going into full on Michael Cole “COULD IT BE!?” Mode

* Baker/Statlander was a bit rough in places and Britt bust out Adam Cole’s Bunny-Hop Destroyer, sad face.
Speaking of rough, that Casino Battle Royale, ye gods. I didn’t think anything would outdo a QT Marshall match for low point of the show, but this was an absolute shocker. The ‘Joker Card Debut’ is already a played out concept. Just give it to a heel and play up them having the advantage.

* I’ve no idea who those guys rapping were, but that was a great entrance for the Lucha Bros and really hammered home how shit The Bucks music is.
“The last time these two teams faced off in a straight up wrestling match, 2 years ago at All Out 2019 in Escalera de la Muerte”- ah yes, Ladder Matches famous for being “straight up wrestling matches” arnt they Excalibur? Then he had that “contraband” line which JR did well to cover for him. He didn’t even have a bad night, he just seemed to lose his mind for about half an hour.
A match that certainly got better the longer it went and super happy with the result, even if I’m still scratching my head about how Penta was supposed to have gotten busted open even before the shoe with drawing pins bit.

* MJF might have only lost once in AEW, but he’s losing the war with his bottle of Fake Tan that’s for sure.
This wasn’t announced as No Count Out or No DQ was it? Or was it held under Summerslam 90 “if it happens outside the ring, it’s OK” rules?
So it’s No Count Out, right? It’s definitely No Count Out, yeah? Then why the fuck was Aubrey counting? “Shoddy, Ted, shoddy!”
They hammer home the point about how the refs “can’t call what they don’t see” on a near weekly basis, but apparently they will just believe you if you just tell them something.
I wanted to like this, but there was too much going against it for me to do so.

* I wish JR would stop describing Darby Allin as “a strange enigma”. All enigmas are strange, that’s what makes them enigmas

* Not sure about Punk’s Midcard Tights, but a good first match back. Not the 5 Star belter that a lot of people were hoping for, but a solid effort from both men. Interesting tease with going towards the heel entrance too.

* Went to make a cup tea and a sandwich when they started to talk about QT Marshall  v Paul Wight. Just sat back down as JR called Paul Wight Big Show and then it was over, so 10/10 again.

* “Accompanied by Don Callis”, Tony S - “boo!”- Tonys the fucking best

* Christian/Omega was another good match, but insane finish aside, I think I preferred the match they had at Rampage. The crowd didn’t seem into it either at certain times, which considering everything else that had happened, it had a lot to live up to and didn’t quite get there.

* Then Adam Cole turned up, even sadder face. Unless they have a ‘Kaze Ni Nare v BAY-BAY Match’ with Suzuki smacking the shit out of the rat-faced knacker, then I’m up for that.
Thank fuck Bryan turned up at the end.

A great show overall. Lost its way a bit after the Cage Match which was definitely match of the night.

That ending was really special.

From Adam Cole coming out, and joining The Elite, to Flight of the Valkyries hitting and Bryan coming out for the save.

In the space of less than a month, there’s a whole wealth of matches that only 6 months ago seemed as though they would potentially never happen, that could easily top PPVs for a long while to come.

Never in 2021 did I think I would see Christian Cage, Jungle Boy, Luchasaurus, and Danielson with their arms raised, fans both in the arena and at home, beside themselves with excitement.

This show was incredible. One of the best I’ve ever seen. But I really, really wished we’d seen the end of the Yes stuff :( that’s my only complaint. I hate it!

You will like in the post show interview he says he won’t be doing it as he sees it as wwe intellectual property

That was one of my favourite PPVs of all time. Yes we had a QT Marshall vs Big Show buffer match, but it served its purpose.

You can tell everyone's having a blast, from the announcers, to the crowd, to the wrestlers. Everyone is just going loving what they are seeing and doing. So many amazing moments during the show.

The fans going nuts and screaming It's Clobbering Time, Punk asking the fans which tunnel he should go down, Penta hugging his kids and getting his blood everywhere was both beautiful and pretty nasty at the same time, Kenny bailing from the ring as soon as Bryan moved forward cracked me up too.

The double surprise at the end of the show was *chefs kiss* Bryan looks in great shape, and he is a legit superstar.

Even after all this, we've still got a Hangman return to look forward to!!

Interesting side by side comparison of the Bret Hart / 123 Kid match and Punk / Darby.

If you go into the link there's someone on Instagram who's found about 4 or 5 spots that Punk and Darby have done that more or less mirror Hart and Kid.

Decent show overall, definitely one of the better AEW PPVs to date.

That opener with Kingston and Miro was superb, and Kojima/Moxley had it's moments. I did wonder if Suzuki might make an appearance here given he's in the US anyway, but that was still a nice surprise.

Baker/Statlander was fine, but I wasn't massively invested as I'm not sure I really "get" Statlander's character and it never felt like the result was anything but a foregone conclusion. Cage match was fun, and it was nice seeing the reaction that Ruby Soho got in an otherwise largely uneventful battle royal. It was perfectly serviceable, don't get me wrong, but I'm not a huge fan of the convoluted casino premise. The finish to the battle royal also felt a little boilerplate, and the sort of thing that WWE are (quite rightly) criticised for doing as the finish to almost every Royal Rumble in recent memory. It's a minor thing, but for a company who are so good at booking a show that feels like the antithesis of WWE it felt like an oddly WWE-like way to end a battle royal.

Jericho/MJF was better than expected, and although the Dusty finish was unnecessary I guess it gives MJF some wiggle room to claim he's technically still undefeated. Hopefully this programme is done though as both men could do with moving on to something else now.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good CM Punk looked, although seeing him in the long tights was a bit jarring at first. Really strong, well structured match that didn't do Darby any harm in the long run. I still want to see Punk vs Sting, and it feels weirdly possible, if still somewhat unlikely.

That main event was excellent, and the post match was really well executed. Danielson (it feels weird not calling him Daniel Bryan after so many years) feels like a big deal for AEW, and maybe not as big a mainstream attraction at Punk, but definitely a huge asset to their in-ring product. Adam Cole, well he's there now so that's a thing, but as others have said as a member of the Elite is probably the best place to stick him.

A good show, everything was at least watchable and at points it was excellent. Aside from the battle royal ending, the only other thing that bothered me, is it does feel a bit mad that they did 4 surprise debuts on one show but the crowd seemed to enjoy it, so I guess it's not a big quibble.
