I think there's a little bit of truth to Rainn Wilson saying it though. Stuff like South Park and Always Sunny are aimed at different ages than The Office were, so they're not comparable. You couldn't just lift stories from South Park and Always Sunny and put them into The Office and expect them to make it to screen, it simply wouldn't happen. They're on different networks (or were) too, with Comedy Central and FX not bringing in the same audience as NBC. Similarly both of them are known for being aggressively offensive, which The Office isn't. Some things from The Office haven't aged particularly well, and if it was wrote and released now they probably wouldn't make it to the show or even be written at all. Michael alone says and does a lot of offensive stuff that would kick up a shit storm now, the same as when I recently re-watched 30 Rock, it's like 60% gay jokes from start to finish. A lot of the humour from the time isn't something that would be accepted without a fight now, and I would expect barring the extreme instances that have been pulled from repeats of other shows like Always Sunny, 30 Rock and Community (mostly Blackface) that The Office has gotten away with that because they never pushed that boundary as far as other shows and has the benefit of being so popular and basically grandfathered in. You've got to think that the statements about it not being made these days would factor in the instance it was being aired originally, not syndicated or streamed on Netflix. There would be no good will already there or anything, it would be a brand new show and if some of that stuff aired new now, to current audiences, it probably wouldn't fly. Oh for sure, some people say it the same way my Mam says "you can't call them black bin bags anymore" because she read it in Facebook once. There's still definitely room for edgy, offensive comedy and in most cases, the people saying things like that are the same knob heads that make it and successfully release it, e.g Ricky Gervais. Though my use of "edgy" in that scenario could be substituted with faux-edgy. I was just making the case for Rainn Wilson and The Office in general. Quote

There's the long-running Stewart Lee bit about his Nan confusing political correctness and basic health and safety legislation, and at the core of that is this realisation that there's an awful lot of people who never engage with any amount of background detail beyond the half-remembered headline of a thing. So they genuinely think that there's some nebulous agency of Wokeness or Political Correctness just arbitrarily going around telling them that they can't say certain words any more, or that certain bits of old comedy aren't acceptable - they make no effort to understand why, they just think "it's old and British, and we're told that's wrong". Thing is, comedy ages faster than pretty much any other art form. As well it should, because tastes change quickly, and people's frame of reference changes quickly, and it doesn't have to be observational or topical comedy to be impacted by that. Censorship can be a blunt tool, and I have some sympathy for the argument that, using Fawlty Towers as an example, the point of the Major is to satirise an old-fashioned type of colonial racism, and that he's the butt of the joke more than the minorities he's talking about - but what that misses is that at the time the show was made, everybody would have encountered somebody like the Major, but now that type of fusty, doddery old ex-military posh racist barely exists any more. Me. 1) I think it's lazy and unnecessary unless you have quite significant communication issues for whatever reason - and I know these people don't. 2) It removes any individuality/personality etc. Even with work, I honestly believe everyone's strengths are what they bring to the table and who they are. And I hate the fact everything's getting filtered through the same shit AI lens. Whether it's emails or marketing or whatever else. If you're writing an email to a team about how something's so important etc etc and yet you couldn't be arsed to even put your own words together then why am I meant to take that seriously? I genuinely find it exhausting that task after task we're losing who we are as people and suddenly becoming this copy and paste world where everything looks/sounds the same. Quote
