JBL was a great foil for Cena and did everything possible to make him look like a top guy. I think JBL's heel run works a lot better in retrospect.

100% agreed; it really shows the contrast when JBL in his programme with Cena acted absolutely terrified of facing him, and put every roadblock in-between them, was the perfect cowardly heel positioned to put over the new anointed babyface, and then Cena jumped to RAW and Triple H did everything in his power to cut him off at the knees, cut promos about being a better "technical wrestler" than him, made him look like shit, right up until having to work the traditional 30 minute slog of a Triple H match.

I was talking to someone about JBL last night, and I think if his first title reign hadn't happened so abruptly, and he'd had more time to establish the new gimmick and then won the belt a year or two in he would be remembered more fondly.

JBL vs Eddie Guerrero (not sure which one, but the one where Eddie bleeds absolute buckets) is one of my favourite matches. Them two were magic together. JBL had the magic formula of always stooging, cowardly to the end, backing off, going for the cheap shot and cheating at every opportunity and also being big and tough enough that you could still buy him as a bully and a threat. It's a lost art.

Is JBL still involved with TNA?

I liked JBL's heel run but I don't think it helped that he didn't really have much to work with on the babyface side.

Big Show, Booker T and Undertaker weren't exactly setting the world on fire at that point. JBL really needed a more dynamic guy to work with and didn't really get one after Eddie. The WWE seemed to realise this by giving him a couple of gimmick matches but they didn't do much to help either.

It would have probably helped if he'd had more Eddie's to work with at first.

This doesn’t exactly disprove your point, but he had a great little match with Hardcore Holly on a random episode of Smackdown:

He more than held his own in the ring during this run - and @BomberPat is on the money, his reign would be remembered very differently if they’d spent more time establishing the character before his WWE title win. For me at least, he was an excellent champion.

The Cena/Triple H Mania match was excellent imo and Triple H really put him over big time. In fact, I’d say that’s the one that truly established Cena as the man. Trips got criticism at the time of the promos but they wound up playing massively into the story of the match hence Cena tapping him out.

On the actual discussion, JBL was a brilliant heel for me and I’m surprised anyone still looks down on that run.

She desperately needs a character overhaul or properly go back to the DING DONG stuff as I quite enjoyed that. But I can't deal with her until she changes that fucking music.

At least Penta is on again tonight.

Does that mean her angle with Roxanne Perez is dumped already? Is Roxanne lined up for Smacksown? They need to keep her away from Bayley unless the Hugger Section comes back and people care about her again.

Realising mid-segment that by having Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens openly discussing winning their respective Rumble matches in order to main event Mania for the WWE Title, that essentially guarantees that it’s not the direction.

But then double checking Wikipedia, and confirming Elimination Chamber is in Canada.

I see you, Hunter. Cockteasing me. New plan, lads. Sami can lose the Rumble. He’s winning the Chamber instead. We just need Kevin Owens to Package Pildrive Max Headroom straight through a ladder. Keep the faith. It’s still happening.

CM Punk mentioning he plans on, “calling in favours,” at The Rumble felt significant. Paul Heyman heel turn? Costing Roman the match, so Punk can win? I’d be bang up for that! Heel Punk and Heyman against Babyface Roman? Emmy Awards all round!

Not sure if Punk’s promo even counts as canon though. It was one of those weird interviews where Jackie Redmond is thrown out there to just fill time. What’s the deal with them? Isn’t Raw aired on Netflix globally now? What advert breaks are they covering for?! Do Americans get live adverts within the Netflix feed?! What an absolute rip off, if true! Definitely the worst thing that’s happened to that country in the last twenty four hours. Can’t think of anything else. What a completely normal country. I salute you (but not like that).

The Bad

- Poor Bayley can’t catch a break. Transfers to Raw. Is immediately followed by Nia Jax. Forced to once again try and drag something half decent out of her, whilst simultaneously in constant danger of getting hurt. Nia looked like shit again. Of everyone on the roster, Nia Jax does not need to be wrestling on both Raw and Smackdown.

- Pure Fusion Collective. Shite.

- Penta didn’t look as good this week. Not sure why. Might just be the novelty wearing off. Might be the rubbish Catherine Wheel in his entrance being nowhere near as good as the flames last week. Might be because Pete Dunne has been so rubbish, for so long, that you forget how good he once was. This was sort of just there. Penta’s not gone full Nakamura yet, but the potential is definitely there.

The Good

- Sami Zayn with the promo of the year, talking about winning the World Title for little fourteen year old Sami. I believe in you, Sami! He’s beating Kevin for the belt at Wrestlemania, don’t you know.

- Kevin Owens’ beautiful Bret Hart hoodie. Gorgeous.

- I can’t decide if she was a plant or not, but either way, the blink-and-you-miss-it bump from this poor old woman, as Roxanne kicks her over, was hilarious. Absolutely decks it!

- In a business built on contrasting characters having a scrap, you’ve got to hand it to Bron Breakker and Sheamus telling that story via the medium of tan. So funny seeing them in the face off backstage, by juxtaposition Sheamus looking so pale he was practically transparent, while Breakker looked so tan he was practically neon. Can’t wait for them to knock shite out of each other on Saturday.

- Kofi Kingston’s bizarre, pec-less chest works so much better now he’s a heel. Get some tits, ya weirdo! Still holding out hope for Big E to launch these pricks into the Wrestlemania sign when he returns in The Rumble.

- Great showing from Drew in the main event. Furious, scary man. The way he kept screaming at Seth for being, “TOO DAMN SELFISH,” I was begging for him to follow up with, “AND THAT’S WHY I’M GONNA KICK YOUR LEG OUTTA YOUR LEG!”

- Interesting development with Sami accidentally hitting Seth at the end of the show. Basic, but intriguing stuff. Seems natural that this’ll eventually lead to a Seth heel turn, maybe joining forces with Drew. Drew and Seth vs. The Usos at Mania wouldn’t be a bad shout. I have no worries about Sami turning heel. This was an innocent mistake from an inherently good man, destined for big things. Not sure if you’ve heard, but he’s beating Kevin Owens for the WWE Title at Wrestlemania.

We're really calling Penta bad already? Jeez. One week. Bit OTT. Full Nakamura? He looked absolutely fine out there. Even Dunne wasn't that bad for a random episode of Raw. I don't expect much more this side of the Rumble. He's still new and they're still introducing him. Mad to turn on him after a week.

Anyway I thought this was nice.

I didn’t realize Chamber was in Toronto. Be a good place to have Trish challenge Tiffany for Mania and have my crazy prediction come true.

Cathy Kelley is stunning! Jackie Redman is annoying me with her looks to camera. Not sure what she's trying to convey. Fear? Derision?
