Good show. Solid return to form after last week.

Excellent opening promo. All these top stars declaring for the Rumble, I think this might be the year Hunter finally nails the Rumble match. Like all their hard work building this web of storylines around Roman Reigns and The Bloodline is finally going to pay off. Can you even imagine when Roman’s music hits? And they’ve already got lads like Drew, Seth, LA Knight, Punk, Cena, Sami and Jey in there? All interconnected, with their own grudges, agendas and motivations? It’s going to feel seismic. Like when Stone Cold had a target on his back in the 1998 Royal Rumble, only with actual stars looking to toss him out rather than a massive bunch of jobbers. First time in years I’m not going to complain when the ring slowly fills up.

It’ll be CM Punk eliminating Roman though. Bet on it. Watching Punk in this opening promo, you could smell the smugness. You can feel the swag. This is a man who’s been confirmed as a Wrestlemania main eventer. They’ve undoubtedly sent him the lineup, with Roman vs. Punk at the top of the PDF. It looked like it took all his self control to not just start swinging his dick in front of Drew and Seth. Both guys would be in the middle of their promos and Punk would loudly interject with, “YEAH AND THEN REMEMBER HOW I PINNED YOU IN THE END AND WON THE FEUD BECAUSE I’M THE BEST?” leaving them both looking like whoppers. You can tell he’s now best mates with Shawn Michaels. This whole thing had real mid-90s HBK energy. I’m the top guy. Suck it!

That’s not to say Punk is winning the Rumble though. No. The winner revealed himself on this show and I’ve been cleaning spunk off my ceiling ever since. Seth knocking Sami Zayn for always helping others, but not himself? Kross and The Miz slagging off Sami for never being World Champion? Sami Zayn finally utilising the POWER OF SELF BELIEF in order to win with a Blue Thunder Bomb?! It’s fucking happening, lads. Kevin’s winning the ladder match. Sami’s winning the Rumble. Sami Zayn is beating Kevin Owens at Wrestlemania for the Undisputed WWE Winged Eagle Title. Join me. Manifest it. We are heading to the Promised Land.

They can do Cena going for the record breaking Title win later in the year. And you can still do Cody and Cena at Wrestlemania, just not for the belt. I quite like the idea of a Cody losing at The Rumble, going full Cody the next night on Raw, bringing his boots out, teary eyes; big gulping throat, only for Cena to interrupt and tell him to NEVER GIVE UP, offering him the Dream Match of oddball androids at Mania. Winner gets a soul.

Other quick thoughts…

I can’t wait for Breakker vs. Sheamus at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Genuine Match of the Year potential.

Karrion Kross made me laugh again. He and Miz are a great double act. “The Wyatts have been transferred to Smackdown AND IF I FIND OUT YOU HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT I’LL SPLIT YOUR HEAD…oh, hi Sami, how’s it going?”

Speaking of which, the Wyatt Six being transferred to Smackdown is really silly. No wonder this week’s Smackdown was filled with impromptu matches! It now makes sense why Nick Aldis was too busy to book anything ahead of time! The admin of acquiring the pro-wrestling services of an uncontrollable, murderous cult that communicates exclusively via VHS tapes must have been a bloody nightmare!

Nailed it there. If they can't do a proper well booked Rumble this year they'll never do one again. Absolutely no excuses this year at all to do a "come in and hit your moves" one after the other match like they often do when they really can't be arsed. They don't even need to try! It's all there. You'd have a tougher time booking people that aren't involved in some way or another at this rate.

Both belts hanging above the ring?

Finish is definitely Kev getting his foot tied in the top and middle rope, then in the process of freeing himself, getting trapped by the wrist.

Or JBL vs Cena one last time, 20 years after Cena beat him to become THE guy.

I’d never considered that, but that would actually be fun. It might (…would) not be the best match in the world, but it would be a fitting addition to Cena’s fairwell tour. Or maybe they simply have them face off in the Rumble. Either way, I like this idea.

I don't think that particular wet fart of a match anointed Cena as THE guy. I'd say the draft and replacing Batista as top babyface on Raw did. WWE title or not, top dog of the B show was very firmly just that at the time, and for many years.

I always thought it was their, “I Quit,” match that made Cena feel like a top star. If you look closely, you might notice they used a tiny bit of blood to add to the drama.

Netflix now though, isn’t it? They could do that, “JBL is poopy,” thing again, but released from the shackles of PG!

“JBL’s a fucking twat.”

JBL was a great foil for Cena and did everything possible to make him look like a top guy. I think JBL's heel run works a lot better in retrospect.

He bled a gusher, what a moment. Trying to one up Eddie almost dying the year before.

I enjoyed JBL’s heel run, and his feud with Shawn Michaels in particular. I don’t have any issue with a one-off short TV match with Cena, or a Rumble spot with the guy. I do like the idea of a portion of the Rumble effectively being Cena’s career flashing before his eyes, with a string of former rivals entering; even if some crucial ones (Edge, Big Show) are unavailable.
