This Time with Alan Partridge

All the episodes of this are now on the iplayer. I've only watched the first, but really enjoyed it.

The sit down airing with Sidekick Simon went exactly how I thought it would, and still made me laugh out loud. Their dynamic is so uncomfortable at times.

I've watched the first three episodes and thought they were really, really funny. They feel like a return to form.

After watching the first episode of this, and This Time, I think I’ve decided I don’t like the Alan Partridge character in these mockumentary-style shows. I just find them “meh” compared to the sitcom setting of I’m Alan Partridge.

I’m very similar. I’ve found much of what the Coogan/Gibbons partnership has done with Partridge to bee top fast paced. Whilst not genuinely a fan of a laughter track, IAP used it really well and it helped to slow things down and ultimately made it funnier. I think the non-sit com stuff see Partridge playing Partridge, rather than naturally being him - if that makes any sense at all.

We had both series of IAP on DVD when I was a young teen and my Dad and I would watch them over and over. When series 2 was first broadcast I vividly remember looking up at the clock above the TV and just wishing it would slow down. I didn’t want the show to stop. I was obsessed with it and still rewatch today.

But I have to say I think This Time is the funniest Partridge show. The other characters are all perfect and every single report Alan does is absolutely hilarious. “Hi Jean…hygiene”. Him guessing what “to huffle” means. The trip to the monastery with the monks. Just 10/10.

I’ve only seen the first episode of the new show and it was good but not a patch on anything else at the moment. Loved the bit with sidekick Simon thinking Alan was going for a handshake during their chat. I’m looking forward to watching the rest.

PS Big Beacon may be the funniest Partridge material out there

I thought it was a slow starter but that might be due to mental health being such a sensitive area and me having to adjust my bonce accordingly. By episode 3 I was howling alone in front of the TV. Prime Partridge.

Was just about to say something similar. I'm normally against AI, and don't want an Alexa in the house. But I'd be willing to change my mind for a Zuzan.

I've only seen the first episode so not sure how it'll go on (I have to force myself to wait for broadcast because it's nice to have something to look forward to) but for the most part it showed pretty much how I anticipated the mental health to be covered. For the most part, everyone Alan talks to is going to be fairly well adjusted and coping with their issues as well as they can while it's increasingly obvious Alan is projecting his own insecurities and any issues onto anyone and everyone in his typically misguided belief it's everyone else with the real problems. 

I thought it was a decent introduction, don't think it's great but it has to give the set up in anticipation and still had some good laughs in there. Every series moves Alans story along and while IAP obviously hit the ground running (with cheese) after the switch from the chat show I understand the introduction being kind of a "this is the set up, wait for Alan to wreck it all".

I watch the Christmas special every year, but it being 30 years old feels mad.

I’m well behind on all things Partridge but the wife just had a free Prime trial so I got to watch Strategem while she was having her hair done the other day. Too many quotables to go into but some of my favourites were :

”I didn’t know lesbians had a cathedral!”

”I knew you had a nasty streak the moment I met you.”

”Look what Netflix has done for Kate Bush!”

… a Partridge reference to Stranger Things being so weird in an “eras colliding” sense, it might as well have been on a 1998 episode of Thunder.

The BBC have added a bunch of Partridge on the iplayer that hasn't been on the for a while or some of it e ever - Knowing Me, Knowing You, I'm Alan Partridge, mid morning matters and scissored isle join This Time, How are you and Alpha Papa.

 

I have seen KNKW for many years apart from the Christmas episode and had completely forgotten that the mask Jed wears were from the last episode. Its still so bloody funny
