Vince McMahon forms and funds Alpha Entertainment: Possible XFL Revival

Recommended Posts

I’m watching the first game. I gave to say the presentation has been very professional. Feels a bit more college football then NFL but not as loud or wacky as when it launched last time. Didn’t see the beginning so not sure if Vince addressed the crowd.

They are trying a few different methods of injecting excitement into the games. Looks like it could be fun

Live on BT Sport 3 tonight.

Just watched that and it made American football 100x more complicated for me, the normal rules were bad enough

No sign of Vince, in fact only one brief mention of him and not a single one of WWE during the broadcast, IIRC.

The presentation style/look was very typical ESPN, albeit with the obvious XFL tweaks like going into the locker room at half time and the coach/player audio during the game. But yeah, clean & professional (in contrast to the second game, on now, in which Fox Sports' announcers sound like they are calling the game from inside a bucket).

*and as I say that, they've just fixed the sound.

I read that they run on and interview players immediately after big fuck ups? That sounds fun. I couldn’t sit through American football for it though, so I’m hoping there’ll be compilations of that kind of thing.

Yep. You just missed an important field goal, how do you feel?

also, just before a play, one of the players in the LA game threw up. Nice nod to Droz there

I've never really watched American Football but thought I'd tune in to this if only to say in a year when it bombs that I was there, because I missed the first one.

It actually was quite fun. Much faster paced than NFL and they do interviews and bits between plays. A guy missed an easy kick yesterday and within 10 seconds he had a mic in his face and someone going "phwoarrrr what happened there?".

I'm not converted over to the sport or anything but it certainly wasn't awful. Easy background stuff.

The XFL is a ratings winner... at least compared to RAW & Smackdown. According to ABC, the opener between Seattle and Washington drew 3.3million viewers* compared to RAW being watched by an average of 2.17million on USA Network and Smackdown drawing  an average of 2.5million on FOX.

Whether that’s just down to first game intrigue or not remains to be seen, but it’s good to see that people were willing to give it a chance as I reckon the original XFL is a bit of joke to purists.

The important ratings news is that the top two highest rated sports broadcasts over the weekend were XFL on ABC & XFL on Fox. There will undoubtedly be some day 1 intrigue in there that will fall away, but that’s a solid start.

Another reasonably important stat  is that FanDuel Sportsbook did 20x the business on the first XFL game compared to the first AAF game last year- the XFL has openly & wholeheartedly embraced the gambling aspect of the sport.
