Great reading FL. Lucas was heavily inspired by Kurosawa's Rashomon, and an early draft of the screenplay focused heavily on R2-D2 and C-3P0's journey. Everything else happening orbits these two. Elements of that idea survived to the final film.

Very interesting. Not sure I could handle a full film of them quite honestly.

I think it's pretty clear that he means the version that is on Disney+. It's incredibly well documented they are George Lucas' changes. Do you work for Disney?

Well, I didn't think so hence my reply. However, as @Onyx2 pointed out there IS an additional edit on the Disney+ version (I watch my older digital copies, so not watched them on Disney+). And no.

As I understand though Disney are trying to work on restoring the original un-special editions which Lucasfilm said would be impossible to do. But the rumour seems to pop up every once in a while.

@FelatioLips they got their own spin off show called Droids. Most remarkable thing about it was the opening theme made by Stewart Copeland from The Police.

Ah, so they aren't the George Lucas final edits as you hastily claimed! 😉

There are de-specialised versions out there already that are all you ever need really, you can download them for free.

Completely untrue. The first and most thorough restoration happened in 1995 for the Executor VHS release. These masters still exist, as do the laserdisc versions of the same period. Lucas has simply stated that the most recent releases, CG wankery and all, are the definitive editions. A rumour I hear is that it's stipulated in the Disney takeover that they can't release the despecialised editions.

Edit: just for clarity I realised I wrote Rashomon when I meant Hidden Fortress.

All this Star Wars talk got me hot under the collar and I decided to watch Attack of the Clones, last night (I'm never making it through Phantom Menace).

I've not watched a second of it since seeing it when it was released. Some of the CGI is much better than I expected and Ewan McGregor seemed to have got the knack of talking to a ball convincingly.

Hayden Christensen is no way near as shit as he's been painted as through the years. Yes, he suffers a bit from being pure early-00s MTV Movie Award Best Kiss nominee, but it would take a really special talent to act their way into making any of that dialogue work. The romance scenes are insufferable; has that Vince McMahon quality to the dialogue where many a word is spoken but all of it jarring and a massive disconnect.

The highlight is without question Christopher Lee being a bad ass. The Yoda battle is maybe the highpoint of 1-3.

I concur @Onyx2. There is no way they cannot release them if they wanted, Lucasfilm just say they can't. The last rumour I saw was for the 45th Celebration, but my guess is they won't be able to until George Lucas dies. I knew I read something about it recently. https://www.flickeringmyth.com/2019/12/j-j-abrams-has-been-told-that-the-unaltered-versions-of-the-original-star-wars-trilogy-will-never-again-be-released

He could have at least added some music over it

The Yoda lightsabre fight is FUCKING SHITE. Completely against his character and unbelievably stupid.

Some good souls have completed proper HD versions of the originals with all the dumb changes removed. You can find them easily on any torrent site.

I ended up buying the Despecialised Editions as none of the ones I downloaded wanted to playback. I realise I could’ve just downloaded some software to sort, but I found them cheap enough and they came in a nice case with a load of extras which I do t think had made home release before

I don’t think there are any rumours of releasing Original Uncut Trilogy any more than it is fans desperately clinging to hope. There was supposedly a “confirmed rumour” that the Rise of the Skywalker home release was coming with some sort of Ultimate Mega Director’s Cut, which of course turned out to be absolute twaddle

It’s just the same stuff as the supposed Snyder Cut of Justice League that ‘definitely does exist, honest!’

It's Star Wars. Daftness is one of it's joys.

I've found the ones that take themselves seriously are the ones I've not enjoyed. The second they start talking about trade routes and politicians I lose interest. Give me Yoda Lightsaber fights and fighting a snake in a trash compactor all day.

Fuck it, I wrote a thing about it. It's wacky as hell, with 3PO basically a metal Norman Wisdom, but expands on the SW universe in quite a pleasing way. It feels legit because Daniels does the voice, and they use all the movie sound effects, plus there's a cameo from the original trilogy (Fett, obviously). I did one about the Ewoks cartoon too, which is utterly abhorrent. Both shows are conspicuous by their absence on D+.

When it came out the Yoda fight was all me and my friends would talk about, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Yoda, but flipping about all over the place!
I’ve since come round to the view you have here. Flippy flippy Adam Cole Yoda is everything the original trilogy Yoda wasn’t - and while I accept Yoda can do all those moves, I can’t accept he’s stupid enough to think that’s the best use of his energy and power. Silly but not good silly. And this is me, who fully accepts daftness in a Star War and not two pages ago proclaimed Lady Proxima the giant worm lady to be great, so I don’t disown NXT Takeover Yoda lightly.

Question about The Mandalorian;

Do I need much Star Wars knowledge to get it? Or can I jump in pretty cold?

For clarity, I've only ever watched the films once (except Force Awakens which I've watched twice, and Rise of Skywalker which I've not watched at all), and I'm not really a massive fan of them outside Force Awakens, Solo and TLJ which I thought were ace. Not that keen on the original trilogy and thought the prequels were garbage.

So I don't really have much knowledge of the universe at all, so will this impact Mandalorian? I can't be arsed watching it if I need to google a load of plot.

Stone cold Malvo.

There is an artefact in the finale that benefits from knowledge of Clone Wars but nothing that will harm your enjoyment.
