Started my new job today in Learning Support, helping people with mental health issues get back and acclimatise to HE. It all seems very rewarding, and I'm very much looking forward to starting proper at the start of the academic year.

My wife worked in Learning Support for several years and although she didn't specialise in mental health cases, she did work closely with several students who had such issues. She absolutely loved that job and still misses it to this day, if you find it half as rewarding or enjoyable as she did you will really enjoy it, Butch. Best of luck.

I'm starting to flap. Not being able to work has got me down for a long time, but I've come to accept it for the time being as much as I don't like it. As Dyllan is now 5 my income support is now being stopped and I have to go onto ESA which is a whole new ball park. I'm really worried as even though my consultants have said I can't work until they say so (unstable and rapid progression of the MS and settling into the new treatment etc) the decision of what band of ESA I get is decided by ATOS, or as us disabled call them 'Don't give ATOS'.

My income support worker has said that I should be put onto the middle band, which is for those who cannot work at present but still have access to the help if they want to train for work etc, which is what I need. But as I said, this is all up to ATOS.

I'm going to be up to

Brother and his wife are making an appointment to see the manager and the guy tomorrow. Let you know how it goes.

Brother thinks that they'll spin the teeth thing into the advisor "trying to gee him up". Getting him to do it so he can get more confidence. I'm betting that they'll pull that shite.

Did anything happen with this in the end?

After I got made redundant at the end of February, I ended up getting a short contract for a couple of months working for the forestry commission, cutting down and burning Ash trees due to Ash dieback which is a fungal disease killing off young trees. Since June I've been doing a bit of security as well as door work for cash in hand. The problem's been that my hours have been cut recently and the door work I've done has been cash in hand and it's only the odd evening here and there covering because people have been on holiday. I know there's going to be more hours coming up with the ramp up to Christmas, but I'm just getting fucked off with the fact it's a lot of evenings and weekends.

As far am I'm aware, nothing at all. I know he made a phone-call to them, don't know if he got anything back. Hasn't been up in a few days.

Don't let them fob him off. What he did was as unprofessional as it was just downright shitty.

I'm looking to get some NCTJ journo qualifications. The NCTJ website itself is a little of the vague side, and although I've uncovered the dates of the exams and the like, I'm still not totally sure what the requirements are to actually go and sit the exams and so on.

I know there's a couple of ex-journos on here (paging Mikey to the thread), so just wondering if they had any advice on the above?

Also, how difficult is shorthand to learn? That's another thing I need to take a big stab at it as the vast majority of jobs I see now require someone to write up to at least 100wpm shorthand.

Things look like they might be improving on the career progression plan, I went for an internal role that I didn't get due to lack of people management experience but was encouraged to apply for a new PM job that is coming up soon, that coupled with a nice backdated pay rise means I might stick around....although 2 companies have asked if I want to work for them, one is in a consulting role and the other I'm not sure what (we are one of their customers and they don't want me going to a competitor). I'm had an informal chat with the former who wants me to visit his office and meet his guys when I can make it to the South East of England and the other company are trying to arrange a call this week.

Both would probably take me away from home a lot more on customer sites which would mean I'd spend less time with my wife and young son which is shitty, but if things get any worse in my current job I can see my entire team's work being outsourced in the next 24-36 months and I can't see myself landing a decent job round here that pays what I get just now. Anyone here been in a similar situation?

NEW JOB!!!

I got offered a Project Manager position a few weeks ago and it's about to be announced to the team, very happy that I've got the job I've been after for ages without having to leave the company and move into an unfamiliar environment or go in at a junior level. The manager of the team has been my manager before and I work within her wider team at the moment and she saw the potential in me as a PM. Celebration pints in London tonight.

I'm a journo for a local paper here in north Wales and from my perspective, it's almost a necessity to get an NCTJ before applying for any jobs. I was lucky and taken on as a trainee, which means they're paying for me to take the government, law and shorthand qualifications. But my employer (Trinity Mirror) seem to have a policy of only taking on trained students, which means the pool is very shallow indeed.

Shorthand, in all honesty, is something i'm struggling with. I don't find it useful in my day to day job as my longhand is pretty quick anyway, so the motivation to pass isn't what it should be. Another thing for me is as I live in a heavily Welsh speaking area, the vast majority of my interviews are conducted in Welsh and as far as I know there is no Welsh form of shorthand. So short of my translating everything in my head, it's not feasible.

After two years I've passed the 80 w.p.m level but am stuck on 100 w.p.m. Some of my colleagues have passed in no time and others find it really difficult. It's not one of those things you can really learn, you can either do it or you can't.

But I would genuinely encourage you to go through the NCTJ course. It can be expensive but it's more and more of a necessity from what I can see.

I'm doing the NCTJ Course at a college over here at the minute and it's going alright, it's what iv'e always wanted to do and the year long course is only costing me a tenner and at the end I receive the full NCTJ qualification. The reporting and the law i'm finding easy enough but the videojournalism while not that hard is annoying and fiddly and of little use unless you want to be an on camera/camera using talent. The shorthand though is an utter bastard and i'm really struggling with it after a month so far. Funny you mentioned it as me and Lister had a bitch about it in another thread recently.

I would suggest having a look around local college and night classes and the like and see if they offer the course as I think it's necessary if you want a job in the field pretty much all over the UK. I really resent having to do the shorthand though especially when my normal writing is very fast and it's detracting from other areas of my work. Bit worried about my hopes of getting a job when I come out too. Might have to look into moving for work which would not be ideal.
