Didn't PTA basically sort of remake Rebecca with Phantom Thread? Which was class.

I find Wheatley gets a lot of props despite only directing one good film (Sightseers) and one semi ok one (Free Fire) The rest is pretty awful.

He's really shit but he showed some flair for action with Free Fire, which was one of the best films I saw last year. He doesn't really understand how to craft films around unpleasant characters and as that's his only trick, he's a bit fucked. At least when they're all shooting at each other you have the satisfaction of seeing them all die. I hated Sightseers intensely.

Whilst I get the hatred for things like A Field In England, I really really enjoyed High Rise.   I loved the visual style, the chaotic and mixed up narrative and the allegorical touches.  It was a good take on a difficult book, and reminded me a lot of early Cronenberg.  Plus Luke Evans is fucking great in it.

Sightseers I enjoyed mainly because it was like a warped version of Nuts In May.

So I take him film by film.  I think he must have touched Gladstone as a child or something, as your hatred of him is visceral

I took a mate to see High Rise with the free tickets I got for renewing my HOME membership.  As we were leaving I said to him that I preferred the book.  "I've not read it" he said, "Nor have I" I replied.

Sightseers had Alice Lowe in it, which raises it to 'tolerable'. High Rise wasn't the worst film I've seen this year. Everything else he's done, I've hated. Especially A Field In England.

He also nearly ruined Capaldi's Doctor Who in the first two episodes.

I like him now.

Is this the guy whose films have really good posters that make you think the film is going to be good but then end up really disappointed? I watched A Field In England at about 2am on Film 4 when I used to smoke weed and it hurt my brain.

Luke Evans is never great in anything. He was perfect for High-Rise.

Balls. He was great in Beauty and the Beast and Fast & Furious 6 & 8. Overall he’s pretty shit though, but like Colin Farrell, the right role in the right film and he’s good

That's essentially saying the same as putting forth that I make a urinal cake great when I piss on it.
