It didn’t occur to me for a second that this might have derailed King’s career, and I hope this is picked up on more widely to put a bit of pressure on Warner. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted February 12 Paid Members Posted February 12 I thought that was a fantastic show, probably the best in-ring show start to finish that they've done in years. I'll even forgive the three-way tag not being to my tastes, because it's a home state show for the Bucks, Private Party were less annoying than they used to be, and it was only match like that on the show. It was such a good show that a lot of the things that annoyed me about it stood out even more, because it's clear how much better it could be. The recurring theme was that nothing was allowed to sink in - Omega and Swerve took a bump off the stage, ahead of a first time ever match, and the show moved on almost immediately, and you'd be forgiven for forgetting by the end of the night that it had even happened. One match featured Darby Allin attacking Clark Connors, Roderick Strong turning heel, and Mina Shirakawa having her hair cut, no time for any of those individually to mean anything. If it's true that WBD didn't want Brody on the show, that absolutely sucks, and I hope that story picks up steam and they have to relent - I guess they're assuming people won't chant it next week because they're not in the US, and I imagine they'll be proved wrong on that. I don't think Bryce Remsburg was on the show either, was he, after admitting that he delayed starting the match to allow the chants to be heard, and has been fundraising since then? He's their travel coordinator, so it might be that he's already in Australia, but I thought that was worth noting. You'd think this will be a real Streisand Effect thing, where drawing attention to the fact that they're trying to prevent something happening will just lead to people doing it more - on one hand, it makes me want to hear people chanting "Fuck ICE" more, but on the other hand, how do you do it without hijacking the show? Fair play to Kenny Omega, though - him namedropping Brody in the opening promo felt really weird, but if it was a point of solidarity because Brody wasn't allowed on the show, I get it. Quote

EDIT Good thing it isn’t true! That news aside, I agree with others that that was a top-to-bottom great episode. Kenny and Swerve’s segment made me want to see a match between them, the six man tag was good fun, the TNT title match was excellent, Toni’s promo was top notch as usual, the tag sprint was mindless fun, and the main event was compelling because of the brutality and the unpredictability. Just before the main event they said it was for the Women's World Championship, and for a second I was surprised that Toni Storm was coming out again. Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted February 13 Paid Members Posted February 13 That was probably the best episode of AEW TV so far this year. Actual top stars interacting in promo segments isn't something AEW do enough outside of MJF feuds, so everytime they do something like the Omega/Swerve face-off it feels fresh and exciting. Both Omega and Swerve have this weird delivery on the mic though - it can make the promos sound more natural compared to WWE-esque scripted promos, but it also comes across as though sometimes they've lost their train of thought or forgot their lines. Still, this was a good segment that made me excited for their match. Don Callis Family vs Death Riders probably benefits from the Family being so big, so they can get away with doing these trios matches every week with enough different combinations that it feels unique every time. The feud has got no stakes at all but I'm enjoying the matches. Ciampa vs Fletcher was one hell of a match. We'll see if Ciampa can crack on past the honeymoon period now when TK typically loses interest in his new signings. Mark Briscoe vs Kyle Fletcher should deliver on the night but the feud has been so stop-start, on-again off-again it's hard to get that excited about it. I'm not a fan of the Death Riders/War Dogs connection, it just muddies the waters for me. That said, this was a decent enough tag match with a cracking Toni/Wheeler/Marina/Mina angle afterwards to heat things back up. It's crazy how little I care about Darby Allin vs War Dogs though. Seems weird bringing Private Party back just as you've introduced The Rascalz who are a similar team, but I don't mind them. A mad spot-fest like this gets a pass from me if it's once a show. Main event was absolutely cracking. Thekla looked brilliant when she first debuted but seemed to get bogged down with some stop-start pushing a few months back, so I'm glad they've pulled the trigger on her now. My only complaint being they could've let Thekla bask in her big moment instead of having the Brawling Birds come down. Any word on if AEW will be on HBO Max when it launches over here end of March? Triller does my head in so I'm looking for an excuse to get rid. Quote
