Oh, I think it’s more likely to be a 1% chance that he does not wrestle in Saudi Arabia. That card is going to be packed with big names, ready to do the bare minimum that’ll be required to earn the big money that’ll be on offer. If they want The Rock to wrestle, and all he’s able to do is a Rock Bottom followed by a pin, that’s what he’ll do.

Just got the show on as Netflix is usually cut out most of the guff a couple of days after the live version has aired (now clocks in at 2hrs40), and who the hell OK’ed Nia Jax’s Rude Dawg & The Dweebs gear.

Full entrances for everyone is certainly a choice

That show was so incredibly meh but particularly the two War Games matches.

It’s a concept so far removed from its original idea anyway it’s almost a mockery of a match now when you look back at the early versions and 1992 as we’ve mentioned previously on here.

Wrestlers getting entrances and taking their sweet time to get down to supposedly help their stricken teammates and don’t get me started on the Jey Uso music interlude. It’s supposed to be ‘war’ FFS!!!

And it’s a good job Bron seemingly doesn’t miss neck day at the gym otherwise we have another Big E (or worse) situation we’re talking about now. Cody either has to fall back on the Doomsday Device OR push Bron’s legs backwards on impact of the clothesline the way Animal used to so Bron fully rotates.

The IYO Sky bin spot is the new Kofi in the Rumble moment they’re going to kick the arse out of, isn’t it? Except it looks shit because the recipients of the dive have to stand there like muppets for an eternity PLUS she’s lucky she didn’t break her leg with that landing.

Dusty will be turning in his grave, if you wiiiiilll! 

Cena and Dom did what it had to do but was far from a classic. It keeps Dom well in the shithouse category though even if fans still want to cheer him.

And the less said about the constant pushing of Nikki Bella as a groundbreaker the better.

I’m glad that people generally seem to have soured on the war games concept as much as I have, even off this forum. I can’t imagine the company won’t be aware of the reception, and same goes to AEW which does it better, but it still ends up being forced into storylines. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both companies experienced creative downturns heading into their respective shows.

It just hit me that it’s just another way, even on a four match card, to extend the time your wrestlers spend doing anything except wrestling as possible. Fuck me, it’s depressing.

To be honest, I didn't think anybody had been particularly high on it since the early nineties. Besides the logistical challenges, there's probably a good reason we didn't see these matches for twenty odd years. Bringing it back was a nostalgia move, but the novelty has well and truly worn off now.

Yeah it was a fun thing to use in NXT and maybe once on the main roster but there's absolutely no need for it every year. They've just replaced the issues they had with one gimmick and transferred it to another.

It literally is the same as the money in the bank or elimination chamber or hell in a cell...... gimmicks that would be used to end a big intense feud instead of now on the calendar and not used for the same reasons hence you get the teams throw together at a whim and no real reasoning or anything other than it's the named ppv

Elimination Chamber has never been a feud ender, and arguably nor has War Games - if anything it was historically a feud extender, a way to stave off the resolution to one or more singles feuds by combining them together.

I don't think gimmick matches being a specific point on the calendar is necessarily a problem; War Games was at Fall Brawl for years, it never hurt the Royal Rumble or Elimination Chamber, we have a whole thread bemoaning the loss of traditional Survivor Series matches, and Money In The Bank is hurt more by doing multiples of the same gimmick match than by it being a fixed point in the year (in fact, like the Rumble, part of that gimmick requires a fixed point). The problem is when wrestling promotions insult our intelligence by treating the announcement of the match as a surprise - rather than "oh my God, there's going to be a War Games match at Survivor Series!", it should be babyfaces issuing the challenge, saying, "me and my mates have a score to settle with you, and seeing as Survivor Series is coming up, how about we do it in War Games?". Even in kayfabe, the company's had to book two rings and a giant cage, the match isn't going to be booked on the fly.

There's a guy doing a project called Wrestling Playlists (trying to chart/collect every non-squash televised match ever) who recently got to 87 and so watched the first War Games in the context of all the TV build up to it. He pointed out the most exciting part of the TV was always two or more of the Horsemen beating down a babyface and then somebody coming to make the save/make it a fair fight, and the first War Games was a format specifically designed to just compress that into a match where it logically happened four times.

Wrestling Playlists is a must read for any fan - I encourage you all to Google it and join the mailing list. You could skip the daily updates if you wanted, but the monthly timelines are essential reading. 

Although I will caveat that by saying atm he’s running a season of giving thing which is a bit different to the usual updates! But from January it will be back to business, continuing on with 1987
