It was Maven for me. I thought he was the coolest motherfucker alive after winning Tough Enough, which in hindsight was probably just because he had a great theme song. I went absolutely berserk when he beat Taker for the hardcore title.

Richards is a great shout! ‘Stevie Night Heat’ was an absolute highlight of 2002-3, and I loved his brief run in WWECW a few years later.

Yeah I don't know what it was but I was partial to Stevie. He gave off the vibe of a real underdog post RTC even as a heel and it was possibly knowing how low he was on the totem pole, I kind of wanted to will him to get better treatment. Plus in every role he had, he did a good job of it. A real good hand who gets overlooked by others who are more recognised as good hands.

"The Anarchist" Doug Williams was someone I paid to see. Great, high-intensity matches with superb technical ability, and the Chaos Theory German Suplex was one of the greatest finishers of all time (doesn't someone in WWE do it now?). Also, the Bombscare one of the best top rope kneedrops I've ever seen.

Not being arsey, Carbomb, but he was the most universally acknowledged as great wrestler on the whole of the britwres scene, so can't really be considered a surprise favourite!

Perrry Saturn in the WWF was another lad I used to like as a teenager. He managed to get that stupid moppy thing over to some extent, which is impressive. He also looked like he could kill you with great ease. The matches I've seen where he loses his temper with jobbers on Heat, Velocity and the like do nothing to make me believe any different. Plus, I was always fond of Terri.

It’s possible I could invalidate Neville Southall’s assertion that he’s never had a good match, because I think I might have paid money to see Al Snow around the time of his run as European Champion. I think it only lasted about 2 months (if that), but I thought his promos were great and that he was overall a very hilarious man. I think it was him coming to the ring in stereotypical attire for a different European country each week, and putting a photo of David Hasselhoff on the announce table when he did Germany. This was way before the internet turned the Hoff into a meme/joke/the song “hot shot city” is particularly good.

Obviously he wasn’t a particular stand out in the ring but I was hugely invested in his matches and was gutted when he lost the title, I think to Regal, who I still haven’t forgiven to this day. Then he got moved into the hardcore title shuffle and I gradually stopped caring.

Gable also occasionally busts out that bridging armbar Doug did when all the FWA title matches were 2-out of-3 falls (every single one finishing 2-1) so he needed a second finisher. 

He's definitely studied some Williams tapes.

During the early years of the second brand split he was on fire - that promo with Daniel Bryan on Talking Smack, a great feud with Dolph Ziggler of all people and a really fun feud with John Cena and Nikki Bella. I’ve said it before, but they absolutely should have put the WWE title rather than Jinder Mahal - it’s no less than he deserved for the work he was doing.

I was a huge Nova fan, mainly because he did cool moves that I hadn't seen before. For some unknown reason I also loved his tag partner Chris Chetti, thought he had all the tools to be a big star and was baffled as to why he wasn't picked up by WWF after the company folded. Looking back on any of that stuff - he's fucking rubbish!
