He attributed that pitch-perfect voice to his brother's pre-audition advice: “Don't be one of those Hollywood heroes. Be strong enough to be gentle.” It's safe to say that he got that right. I've been a life-long Decepticon but I'm surrounded by Optimus Primes purely because he was an icon, and much of that was the sound as well as the look. (I was even represented by Optimus Prime in the one occasion that we produced a family Christmas card, despite my allegiance to the other side.) (Edit: Sorry, Jazzy. LSM Posted August 27 Posted August 27 A giant part of my childhood in Peter Cullen has died today and I'm still trying to process it being a huge fan of his and Transformers from the original 80s to the present day. I put this on my social media and I hope you don't mind but I'd like to share it here as well......... They say never meet your hero's but with Peter Cullen that couldn't be further from the truth. Back in 2019 I flew to Las Vegas specifically to meet Peter and his Transformers counterpart Frank Welker. Peter was the kindest, most humble person I've ever met. He had such a warm heart and loved and appreciated his fans. When he auditioned for the role of Optimus Prime, his brother gave him the advice that the character should "Be strong enough to be gentle". That perfectly describes Peter as well. I had the pleasure of meeting Peter twice more when he came to the UK. His warmth and kindness was consistent here as well, it wasn't an act. An icon in the voice acting world, you've probably heard him and not even realised it, from voicing Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the first voice of KARR in Knight Rider, Venger in Dungeons and Dragons, as well as the vocalizations of the original Predator. Lovely tribute, as a big TF myself it was a massive thrill that Monopoly brought Peter and Frank over to Liverpool for Comic Con a few years ago. I made it a priority to go to their panel and it was half an hour of pure magic, culminating in them doing a two hander segment as Optimus and Megatron that they had written that day, which I was fortunate to capture on film and post to my socials. Inevitably one of the social media tributes came from his English-born compatriot Erling Haaland. Of course there are issues with the institution he represented (which might soon collapse anyway now he's gone), but it sounds like he was a nicer, if extremely privileged, person than actual war criminal Mladić at least. Major figure in second wave feminism, the civil rights movement, and all sorts of other political goings-on in the 60s and 70s - a lot of the organisation that makes the movement so successful during that period doesn't happen without her.
