I prefer Welcome to Hell, but probably just because it's the one I heard first.

I love a bit of Venom, but I have to admit they're one of the worst bands I've seen live. First time was at Hellfest in France, 18 year old Mal's first festival abroad. Took a Newcastle flag and waited down by the barrier for hours for their set only to leave after about 15 minutes, they were so bad.

Fast forward 16 years and I saw them again at Brutal Assault in Czechia and they were still terrible but also so slow. Cronos complained towards the end that they had to cut a couple of songs due to time, to which my mate shouted "if you played the songs properly you'd have space for another album". At least that time we managed to make a drinking game out of how many times they botched something 😂

One of the cornerstones of my childhood TV viewing. Might have to have another trot through Mr Millard's retrospective book.

I started reading it again today; I give it a reread every few years when I need a bit of cheering up. I love Millard’s videos but So Excited, So Scared will always be my favourite thing he’s done.

There was an article about him on the BBC site yesterday about his visit to his old school library.

Hadn't thought of him for years until I read it. How strange that today he's in the news again.

Eva Marie Saint passed away yesterday at the incredible age of 102. Great actress, and stunning to boot - particularly in North by Northwest.

That's shite. I'm watching Breaking Bad at the minute as my girlfriend had never seen it. He was perfect in that role.

Terribly sad. Apparently his ex manager nicked the money she was supposed to be paying in taxes on his behalf and he ended up owing more money to the IRS than he made in his entire run in Breaking Bad. He was excellent as Walt Jr. The scene where he protects Skyler and his sister from Walt towards the end of the show was really well done.

Funnily enough we’re doing the same - I’ve watched it loads but the missus is seeing it for the first time. Clocked the news as we were watching one of the final episodes which seemed very eerie.

From what I’ve read in the last few minutes he did so much outside of his acting role, but he really was superb as Junior. Obviously we’ll need confirmation but early indications suggest he may have taken his own life, making it even more tragic at such an age.

I spent some time with him once when he was in the area for a convention. Really friendly, easy to get on with, loved to chat about his work and his hobbies (I know nothing about fishing but he taught me some stuff!) And of course, he’s fantastic in Breaking Bad. Extremely sad news to wake up to.

Edit: I’ve got a couple of photos, which I won’t post here but are nice to look back on, especially now. But I will post the tweet he sent me afterwards:

Country music great John Anderson at 71.

Incredible voice. Hell of a songwriter. Seems weird to say about someone in the Country Music Hall of Fame, but he's actually probably a bit underrated in the grand scheme of things. Had an up-and-down career as, despite being really talented, he didn't have the marketable 'look' that some of the late 80s/early 90s guys had (George Strait, Garth Brooks etc.). He was enjoying a bit of a resurgence recently because he's a songwriter's songwriter and people championed his work.

And at the end of the day, it always comes back to the songs and John Anderson had some exceptional ones.

RIP.

I really enjoyed his song "Straight Tequila Night" - posted it in the Song of the Day thread. Very distinctive voice.

Really need to listen to more of his work.

RIP.

Tom Skerritt has passed at the grand old age of 93.  Always believable in any role he had, I knew him best for Top Gun, and as the Captain of the Nostramo, Dallas in Alien, but he was also great in the Twin Peaksish Picket Fences which was one of my date night watches with my then girlfriend all the way through her being my wife.

Japanese author Ryū Murakami has died at 74, most likely best known over here as the author of In the Miso Soup or Audition which was later adapted by Takeshi Miike.

I've been meaning to read Coin Locker Babies which was only recently translated into English IIRC, radical and heavily influential in Japan with even a Yakuza game taking huge story points from it.
