Wrestlers say the stupidest things

Seth Rollins is the result of what happens when a wrestler has a ton of talent and boundless potential between the ropes but is under-coached and over-praised, especially when that wrestler has a natural proclivity to arrogance.

When he was a heel first time round and had learned a little “less is more” he had all the hallmarks of a future great, but I strongly believe he had so many people telling him he was already there that he forgot about “less is more” and started doing more again. His Phoenix Splash at the Rumble was a taste of things to come, and if you think it’s his persona that’s the bulk of his problem, stay with me. So, everyone loved the Phoenix Splash and that triple threat in general, everyone raved about the aforementioned RKO at Mania 31 and by the time the show closed you forgot he’d lost because he’d won big. The Rumble was great, the RKO was great, the cash in was great… the message “Rollins is great” was booming. And he was listening. By the time his run with Cena comes round he’s adding whatever shit into his matches he can to make people keep talking about him - at SummerSlam he’s a full blown Tanahashi cosplayer complete with doing the High Fly Flow and everything, imitating one of the best babyfaces of all time despite being the heel (and some of the spots in that match took it way too far) which - survey says - got him cheers. Not that getting cheered against Cena makes him unique, but still. Nobody checks him at this point and reminds him he’s supposed to be the villain. He’s got fans cheering him, and nobody in the office is urging restraint. The message is clear - “Seth Rollins can do no wrong.” It’s probably best he got hurt when he did because Rollins vs Reigns at 32 could have been catastrophic for the failed attempt at Roman the hero.

Fast forward to - a little too long after his comeback, for me - the big babyface title reign. Now, personally I loved his defeat of Lesnar at SummerSlam 19. Of the numerous times they’ve used Brock as the end of game boss for the next face title run, for me this was the time they got it right. It’s an underrated classic I think more people would talk about if Seth wasn’t fully exposed as a rampaging thundercunt. But the wheels fell off ; a combination of atrocious booking of the Fiend feud, his natural dislikability and perhaps some of the cringey on screen association with his wife (who can be a tad overbearing herself) turned the live crowds off from Seth Superman. In the months to come the office and Rollins set about remaking him as a bad guy and no doubt, every rankle he added to his “Freakin” character was met with unanimous praise. The louder they boo the better, agreed, but he carried on wrestling like he was on XL. He wants to carry himself like the bastard love child of Ric Flair’s flamboyance and Brian Pillman’s unpredictability but in his mind he has to wrestle with flash big moves like Kota Ibushi and try drawing sympathy like Bret Hart and the result is a fucking mess because nobody tells him “no.” They trusted him as a safe pair of hands with Cody’s return but his mannerisms were awful at the reveal and they spaffed their wad so badly with big moves and finisher kick outs. He put in a hell of a shift at CastleMainia XXXX and that cemented his reputation - “Cor, look at Seth. Doing that while injured ; not only is he great, he’s a TEAM PLAYER. Phwoarr!”

Where we are now, there’s no end in sight. They keep feeding his ego ; make a new title just for him! Give him another Mania “main event”! Give him a set of Horsemen and Paul Heyman reminding the viewers (and him) that he’s the greatest over and over and over and over and over again until they’re sick of it! Give him another cash in “moment” so the fans talk about him at the end of a PPV! If he’s too hurt to appear, send a Conquistador out and imply it’s him - simply everyone needs to be talking about Seth!!

He’s going to carry on thinking, acting and talking as if he’s actually the best of all time because the company continues to give him zero reasons to doubt it. The window for constructive feedback is long closed and he’s going to do or say whatever he wants. Not so much Seth Freakin’ (ugh) Rollins as “Awwwww no…. Seth fuckin’ Rollins.”

Fundamentally I just don't understand what they see in him. It's baffling. Why do they love him so much? Of all the wrestlers with potential who never got the big push why did they give it to him? Of all the people!

The only reason I can think of is that he's best mates with all the right people.

Seth’s let the mask slip enough online to make it pretty obvious he’s an absolute Fed Head. Seems to truly believe WWE is the pinnacle of sports and entertainment, whilst AEW is the enemy, trying to take food off his family’s plate.

Essentially, he’s The Miz but with more flips.

I think that it must just be a case of him being well in with the right people, yeah. He's been stinking up the shows as a top guy for a decade now!

it's fascinating, because normally the person in that spot is someone like Randy Orton, who I find extremely dull to watch but can recognise is very good at what he does, and is a safe worker with excellent timing, or John Cena, who is perhaps the best in the world at a style of wrestling that generally doesn't interest me. But Seth Rollins' style isn't what anybody would have thought of as "WWE Style" ten years ago, and - not that I want to hold them against him, as accidents happen - he has a number of pretty serious injuries both to himself and his opponents under his belt, so it's not like he's the reliable safe pair of hands that WWE would normally love either. I tend to just chalk it up to "I don't understand what WWE is or what its fans want any more", but there has to be more to it than that.

In terms of him genuinely believing WWE is the best - there's a story from his training school, around the time Seth was in a Twitter spat with Ospreay. Now, generally, when wrestlers get into daft arguments on Twitter it's either because they're trying to work their own angle, or because they're bored out of their mind in a hotel in the middle of nowhere or at an airport waiting for a delayed connecting flight, and you should never take it seriously - I very much doubt Will thought much of it, other than generally making the case that the best wrestler in the world isn't necessarily in WWE, and that people should open their eyes to wrestling from more places; that's something Will has always been pretty consistent about. But Seth definitely took it personally, and was adamant that he was so much better than Will Ospreay, and that Will was being disrespectful for even suggesting otherwise. When he heard one of his trainees praising a recent Ospreay match, he punished them, by making them try and run the ropes as many times as they could in a minute. 

Best part of the story is, that trainee then broke the school's record for rope-running. A record previously held by Seth Rollins.

And at least with Orton you can understand why they would give him a continuous big push even at times when he's clearly half-arseing it and can't be bothered. He's at times been a genuine draw, he's reliable, consistently over no matter what and looks like a statue of a God in human form. Seth Rollins is none of those things. Literally any other era of the company he wouldn't have made it past the Jakked or Metal level.

The superplex into the falcon arrow is one of the worst combo moves I’ve seen. How are you popping straight back up after delivering a superplex. That kind of stuff is for PWG where you know what you’re getting. Spots and hardly any selling.

Think of all the lads who struggled to get top billing over the last 20 years, or who were actively sabotaged and push delayed til it made little difference. RVD,  Christian, Booker T, 03 Goldberg, Bryan and even LA Knight more recently. 

Then you have Rollins, the cackling gobshite who reckons a personality = funny sunglasses, at the top for a decade. Also spilled over into making Becky join the funny outfit brigade too. Would be infuriating if I actually watched WWE regularly anymore.

It's been back in fashion for awhile, but there's something heartwarming about this level of Triple H hate. Marrying the owner's daughter being back on the menu takes me back to a much, much simpler time in my life and in wrestling.
