yeah, it doesn't really matter what motivated the shooter, not one of the people calling for violence/censure of the left and the Democrats will admit fault or dial back their rhetoric. Hell, Charlie Kirk was shot while blaming trans people for mass shootings - a meme that's very popular in right-wing circles, and it wouldn't surprise me if within a month or two the far-right take on this will be that the shooter was definitely a trans communist regardless of who they actually turn out to be.

Really quite amusing how they're all trying to make out they're peaceful and the "left" are the ones spoiling for the fight.

But, really, if anyone pays attention to the history of the United States, this all fits within the pattern.

It fought for and gained its freedom - except for the enslaved people.

Even though it eventually abolished slavery, for a country that supposedly places a premium on liberty, it didn't compensate the formerly-enslaved people, just the enslavers.

Even after it officially abolished slavery, it went to war with itself over it. (And, by the way, abolition was mostly driven by an economic and political decision, not a moral one - the North didn't want to risk increasing the black population of the US, and the South believed it could keep them under control through slavery.)

Even after the anti-slavery faction won the war, the political elements behind the Confederacy still had an influence, right to the present day where there's still an argument over the battle flag being a racist symbol, and the right wing try to claim that the Civil War was about state's rights, and not slavery.

Even with the supposed victory of the Union, there was still the Kirk-Holden War, where the United States government went to war with the Ku Klux Klan, and the Klan won, because of all the Klan members in the US government at the time.

Even with slavery officially abolished, millions of blacks post-Emancipation still died of starvation, because they couldn't get work, except under the most crushing conditions offered by the former enslavers, when they realised it cost them less to keep them as low-paid workers instead of as enslaved people.

Even with slavery abolished, and black people's rights officially being recognised as falling under the same constitution as those of white people, the United States government still allowed the southern states to pass Jim Crow laws/segregation.

Even with the Jim Crow laws finally abolished - after much suffering, many deaths, and a lot of highly-publicised, highly-fraught struggle by various organisations involving millions of black people - there was still lynching and Ku Klux Klan marches (despite the KKK now being a proscribed, terrorist organisation).

Even with all that prior work done, the CIA still floods black neighbourhoods with drugs deliberately (admitting to it years later) in the 90s, alongside a Clinton administration that enacts some of the most draconian and anti-black legislation ever passed by a US government, let alone a post-Nixon Democratic one.

Even after all this, we are back here again. 

 

 

 

Bear in mind, what I've listed above isn't even the tip of the fucking iceberg.

This is infuriating because while running the Kirk story they should be reporting it as it's vital contextual information. I know people like Farage will be upset and the BBC work very hard to try and keep him happy for no actual positive outcome for them, but they should be highlighting that yet more people aren't coming home from school and this piece of shit deemed it "worth it". Don't beat around the bush, don't talk about him as a key trump ally and all that bollocks without actually putting the context there. I had a chapter in my dissertation about school shootings (specifically the Columbine Shooting). You’d be amazed how many school shootings there are actually are that get next to no kind of reporting depending on whether or not they’re classed as “mass shootings” or not. Last year there were 586 mass shootings in the U.S., an average of 1.6 per day

And it’s increased exponentially year on year since 2020 (Light Purple indicates the number up recorded upto the same day of the year as yesterdays shooting)

Trump has just claimed in an interview he’s doing with Fox & Friends that they have the suspect in custody.

Oh and that he “hopes he gets the death penalty”, which the state of Utah does still have. In addition to Lethal Injection Utah does offer execution by Firing Squad as an alternative, although that is only if they are unable to obtain the substances used for Lethal Injection within 30 days of the execution date

There’s pictures of the guy they supposedly have in custody going around. Someone found his and his parents Facebook. I never know what to believe with shit like this but IF it’s the right guy then it appears he’s white, straight, Dad’s a retired cop and his parents are both God fearing religious people. All I’d seen since the shooting was nutters jumping to the conclusion that it’s definitely some “evil crazy trans/leftie” despite there being no info on the shooter the time. So they’re gonna have to get a bit creative with how they spin this one.

Sounds like his family turned him in Wand. They've also found an unfired bullet casing with the words "Hey fascist catch" inscribed on it.
