what would stop Putin doing that with a Zelensky or a neighbouring president? Where would the condemnation come from for that, if there isn't any for this?

Putin does whatever he likes, and doesn't even try to hide Russian involvement. See for example Alexander Litvinenko, Alexei Navalny or Sergei Skripal. Ignoring Litvinenko, in the case of the latter two they didn't even bother to use a method which might give them some kind of plausible deniability such as just shooting them. Instead they use the Soviet developed nerve agent Novichok which just screams "We did this, we don't care that you know, and there's nothing you can do about it (except meaningless sanctions)".

Ooh, good. Saudi Arabia next.

Saudi do oil deals in dollars, so they're safe.

The West only went after Saddam, after decades of keeping him in power, when he started doing oil deals in Euros.

They only went after Qaddafi, after cosying up to him, when he tried to launch an African petro-dinar.

They were happy to let Putin and his gangster oligarchs scud about their countries and live it up large, until Russia tried to start doing oil deals in roubles.

They're only going after Venezuela now because Maduro declared he would "free Venezuela from the dollar" and started doing oil deals in Chinese yuan.

Nothing will happen to the US, no war crimes, no arrests, no repercussions, nothing. He knows this and knows he can get away with pretty much anything. It's depressing as shit, but it's the way he thinks.

The most frustrating thing is, he literally can’t be held to account right now - who is going to do it? The UN can’t - even if they tried to, the US has a veto meaning it wouldn’t amount to anything. The US has already placed sanctions on the ICC and would simply refuse to comply. Trump has also built protections into the US justice system that’ll make it harder for members of his regime to be prosecuted even after their term is up - and that’s assuming there’s another free and fair election there in the first place.

I hate to be so grim, but this feels like it’s the beginning of something rather than the end, and that we’re about to enter some devastatingly dark times - and I’m saying that with full awareness that it feels like we’re already in them.

And the lack of awareness that general people have of the impending doom is worse. Its rare to have the discourse available here.

The absolute lack of awareness that some people have of what is going on in the world and how it will effect everyone is staggering.

It really does feel like the start of something. Better start replaying the Fallout series in preparation.

The way the BBC (and, to be fair, other outlets) are reporting on the shooting of a civilian by ICE Agents in Minneapolis is really infuriating me. On TV, alongside the footage so people can see what happened, it’s one thing; but treating the accounts of local government and Trump’s administration as being equal on the radio and online isn’t ’providing balanced coverage’, it’s denying what your own eyes are telling you. The Trump administration says she drove at ICE agents when she was shot, clearly that didn’t happen.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t report on the line given by his administration, but saying ‘Trump says this, local officials disagree’ isn’t sufficient here. Say ‘Trump officials claim - without providing evidence - that…’ or describe what the video shows or something if you really must, but don’t make it sound like this is currently ambiguous.

I really hope that one day, members of this administration are actually held to account for their actions.

If there was any time the BBC were going to go in on Trump's bullshit, it isn't now.

In fairness, their "BBC Verifies" stuff normally pulls up all Trump lies but, that's just such a small aspect of their coverage.

Unfortunately they won't be. America has gone so far beyond, it is going to take decades to fix. You've got the president advocating cold blooded murder which has been witnessed across the world, and said "well she was a terrorist and tried to murder the agent" when we can all see that's not the case. The White House have all backed this up, they just don't care.

What's going to happen? Who's going to hold them accountable? No one. It's beyond depressing.

And all the cunts will read about that woman and think "well she wrote poetry, went to Uni to study English, she must be a socialist who deserved it" and not listen to any other reasoning, or see the video in any way other than their biased way.

Until someone slumps that cunt in his head, or his missus snaps and smothers him with a pillow, they'll all continue to get away with it, with no repercussions.

My eldest said yesterday the States is now like the alternate 1985 time line in BTTF and Trump is Biff, and she's not far wrong.

It's utterly mental what's happened the last couple of years.

I don't see much 'both sidesy' about that article. I think it's quite clear.

The live updates "thread" on the news page has updates from US Homeland and JD Vance as well as officials in Minnesota, AOC, etc. It's not unreasonable but it's definitely not taking a view like the above post is.

Honestly, living in this country feels like a fucking nightmare at the moment, and I really wish right now I was back in my NYC bubble. Too many cunts walking around with MAGA hats on, and you just know they're carrying so you can't even take their hat and throw it in a bog.

@SuperBacon Bob Gale said that Biff (from BTTF 2) was based on Trump on a few occasions.

Last night I was going to broach the subject of possibly going to Orlando this year with the kids. There’s no way I’m taking them over there with things like they are right now. That footage was harrowing.

How anyone with a straight face can say she was trying to use the vehicle as a weapon I don’t know. Trump saying the guy could have died and was recovering in hospital was wild when you saw the guy get into his own car and drive away before the police arrived. He really thinks the general public are all fools.

You're pretty much the only person I know that lives there and I always think of you when I see USA news. Keep your head up brother and keep going for #EatClean

My brother lives in the US. Other than the cost of living, none of this affects his quality of life. I think of it as similar to our massive small boat problem. Which, as far as I can see, affects me and where I live in no way whatsoever. Other than the flags on lamposts and grafitti.
