Secretly he's been working with the opposition in Venezuela to overthrow the president and government to get regime change that will allow much more favourable access to their oil reserves. Trump has just admitted that the oil companies will be free to go into Venezuala now and US will run Venezuala for the time being. As Ultimo showed further up, I'm sure it was all about drugs and it was nothing at all to do with oil.. As an aside, Trump is rambling and repeating himself and is hardly coming across presidential or statesmanlike at all. Just a rambling old man who's spending as much time talking about crime in the US as well as the Venezuala attacks. Quote

Clearly this isn’t a defence of Trump, but the last election in Venezuela was considered a sham not just by the US, but a host of countries (link to BBC). The UN expressed concern about some of Maduro’s actions too - the detention of political opponents, for example. What Trump has done is reprehensible, breaks international law and may have knock-on effects - such as China taking the chance to invade Taiwan. It also leaves me concerned about how far Trump himself if willing to go - would he actually take Greenland by force, for example? That said, I don’t think Maduro should be presented as anything other than what he was; an authoritarian leader, guilty of human rights abuses. It’s still essentially an act of piracy on Trump’s part, he’s not even trying to pretend it’s not about oil. It’s scary stuff. Quote
Members SuperBacon Posted January 3 Members Posted January 3 Trump believes and operates under the thought that there are 3 superpowers in the world, them, China and Russia and that as long as they don't mess with him, he doesn't mess with them. I think he's accepted this situation with that, and now the rest of the world can pretty much sod off. Nothing will happen to the US, no war crimes, no arrests, no repercussions, nothing. He knows this and knows he can get away with pretty much anything. It's depressing as shit, but it's the way he thinks. If he can get away with this, what would stop Putin doing that with a Zelensky or a neighbouring president? Where would the condemnation come from for that, if there isn't any for this? Our government is complicit as well. We hold £2b worth of Venezuelan gold that we've frozen recently, weakening them and strengthening the US position. No wonder they won't condemn this. Quote
