Best And Worst Fandoms

This isn’t about creators, it’s solely about fans and fandoms.

We have all experienced fandoms, there are many that I know about and many I don’t and/or may have wrong in your opinion. What are the best and worst? Sport doesn’t count  We all know wrestling fandom is the worst

Although I’m not a fan, Harry Potter seems a really nice fandom. The only rivalry and beef seems to be over which house you are, and even then it’s appreciative of each other and they all seem to get along.

Again, one I’ve seen not because I’m a fan but my girlfriend is, Supernatural (The TV show) is a toxic hellplace. Say something that’s not gushing about the three lead actors? You’re fucking dead, mate. The worst example I saw was when they accused the show of “Queer Baiting” because Dean and Castiel never bummed each other. Despite showrunners, actors, and producers saying they shared a fraternal love, that wasn’t good enough for the headcases. Absolute yampy stuff.

Swifties are to be avoided as well. Jesus Christ.

What’s toxic and what isn’t in your fandom world?

By and large I don't engage with fandom of anything but I really, really like Dr Who.

Up until 3 years ago DW fan sites were safe, lovely places to be.

Since then, Gammons who never watched the show in the 1st place are review bombing, complaining that the show's been ruined by a female lead and stories about Rosa Parkes.

Persona/Shin Megami Tensei fans become the worst over the years.

Back in the day they were pretty chill other than the occasional asshole but it's been downhill since Persona exploded in popularity.

Now you have Persona fans always crying "where my new Persona?" any time something non Persona is announced and mainline SMT fans permanently sneering at Persona fans.

Not as toxic as other fandoms but disappointing seeing how shit the fandom has become.

On the other hand the Final Fantasy XIV community has been great in my experience. Really helpful and patient compared to other MMO communities.

I'll go for worst because I'm not really into any things that I really interact a lot with others besides a post here about the grappling.

*Those people who watch and comment to online nonce hunter stuff that gets livestreamed.

*Middle-class gobshites who say that Fleabag really speaks to them.

*I'm never seen Rick & Morty so I'm no judge of it, but it's fan base really makes me ugh.

*Comedians who are very chinstrokey when it comes to castigating their famous influences because they're outed as sex offenders, racists, creeps or general absolute fuck-ups. Mostly pricks in baseball caps.

*Red Dwarf fans.

Sonic The Hedgehog. Partly due to just growing out of the target audience but also because the fandom is chock full of weirdos.

I grew up on the original Mega Drive Sonics and I was a huge fan. Child me, in the early-mid 1990s thought he was the coolest and the games, cartoons and everything were ace.
I never had the Saturn or Dreamcast so I missed the entire Sonic Adventure generation and so imagine my surprise when after all those years, now I'm in my late teens, and the Sonic fandom is no longer just kids gushing over these cool games but is now just people drawing endless porn of it, drawing themselves as hedgehogs and shipping Tails into sexual relationships when he's a child fox. And to add insult to injury the games are all mostly shit now.

Me and my mate made the mistake of going to a gaming night at a bar once and instead of some nice mix of people playing different stuff and having gaming themed cocktails, it was wall to wall sweaty neckbeards who stank, and the second the bar played "Escape from The City" from Sonic Adventure 2 they all broke out into song. We couldn't get out the door fast enough.

A fun game we played at work once was to google your own name and put "the hedgehog" at the end of it and some of the stuff you see is fucked.

That's a good one. Those losers actually made me change my opinion on the show, which I had thought was pretty decent. I've got less than no interest in ever watching it again.

Kpop fans seem fucking insane from bits and pieces I've read.

Yeah apparently they are nuts.

Jpop fans can also be pretty "intense" I believe.

Also just remembered a popular Japanese voice actor having to apologise to his fans. His crime? It turned out he was married and had a family.

Star Wars, some of Star Trek, and Doctor Who fans are the worst. It feels like the majority of Doctor Who fans have been hate watching the show since David Tennant left, each week registering their disgust and vowing to never watch again until next week. They've been particularly vociferous since Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker took over, but I don't think they'll be any happier with the "second coming of Russell T Davies", especially if the rumours about Lydia West being the next Doctor are true.

Star Wars was bad during the last trilogy, particularly for Last Jedi because of Rian Johnson not making the Star Wars film they'd all already made in their heads.

The Harry Potter fans seem to be generally united aside from house banter, especially when it turned out that JK Rowling was the villain of the piece all along.

Confession about Star Trek. My avoidance of it is marvellously petty. I can't do that fucking V hand they do. The Vader Time sign as I know it. We went Jodrell Bank for school and they had some Star Trek TNG thing there and some footage and everyone did the hand sign. Not me, can't do it. Meh Fucking nerds.

@gmoneyLouis from 1D looks like Ed the Hyena from The Lion King and I'll hear no argument.

The UK's best Doctor Who fan is the fantastic Toby Hadoke.

There’s a very wholesome and supportive dads group based around the wonderful Aussie import ‘Bluey’ on CBeebies. For the uninitiated, the show is about a family of anthropomorphic dogs who live in Brisbane, and generally focuses around the two daughters Bluey and Bingo. However Bandit, the dad, has become a breakout star thanks to being the sort of parent most of us aspire to be, and so the show seems to have really resonated with fathers of children of a certain age. Somehow, a Facebook group full of predominately middle-aged men has become a very positive space overall.

(Incidentally, if you have kids of around age 0-7, I’d highly recommend Bluey… or even if you don’t)
