Homestuck.

Luckily I've never had to cross paths with any of them.

I have. For 14 years.

I'm going to assume they're a great Homestuck fan, but god damn there was a period years back on places like Tumblr where they'd attack you on mass, thinking you were shitting on the comic and most likely it wasn't anything to even do with it. My corner of the site was too far away for any of that but I'd see it often.

Another thing about Potter is you had all these kids and none of them turned out wronguns, damaged by fame at an early age and descending into a drug hell that I could only dream of. Seems decent enough!

Didn't Radcliffe turn to drink for a few years?

I say this as a Doctor Who fan (so stones and glass houses and all that) but there really should have been an upper age limit for Twilight fans. We've all wanted to shag people who are no good for us but there really should be a time of life where you respond to the question of Jacob (the abs) or Edward (the eyebrows) with "I'd rather die celibate thanks."

I'd echo the Doctor Who comments. For a show that's all about change there's a hell of a lot of fans that won't accept it.

I think its the same as Star Wars in that its been going on for SO LONG that the fandom is such a weird mix of old men who love the old stuff and maybe some of the new stuff but not if it stays off the path they perceive to be the "true" version that they love. So women have their place but obviously on the sidelines as companions but god forbid one is the main character.

These views obviously don't align with the newer generation of fans who tend to be a lot more open but definitely have their own psychotic shipping tendencies and find their own shit to moan about like characters not being gay enough or something.

As I said earlier Dr Who fans are fine. Maybe there are a few Tennant obsessives who constantly moan about when he's coming back.

The toxic nature of fandom at the moment is coming from non-fans injecting the misogyny and racism into the discussion.

Fandom of DW was always very gay friendly in the old days BTW.

It's the same with any fandom really. Yes there's a lot of fine ones but there's a section of crazy ones too. Ones that make up shit in their own heads about what characters should or shouldn't be like and then they get angry when the show doesn't follow their exact beliefs.

Oasis fans. We don't need to get into how awful they are, but nearly 30 years after Definitely Maybe, there are still weirdos dressing and swaggering around like Liam Gallagher who can't handle any criticism of their output. They genuinely believe they're the greatest band of all time. It's baffling. We all love specific artists, but I don't know of many who have such cranks adoring them who refuse to accept any other band/artist as being better. It's like they don't realise you can like more than one artist. I love Manchester for a gig and a night out, but bloody hell some of the locals are stuck in a time-warp.

I'm off to watch Brookside.

As evidenced by my username, I'm an unashamed Frank turner fanboy, travelled all over the world to see him, about to hit my 50th gig etc, but some of his fans are fucking atrocious. Like they will absolutely destroy you for having even a slightly negative opinion on him, using be more kind as some kind of shitty shield that means you can't criticise him while basically cyber bullying you. It's actually insane.

Was just talking about this to my girlfriend. She is a massive fan of Tony Sly and said the first she heard of Frank Turner was his cover of International You Day on the tribute album. She hated it and wrote him off but she has the enhanced function on Spotify and some of his stuff came on and she really likes it.

She introduced me to the music of Jon Snodgrass and just saw he’s done songs with Frank Turner so that’s the music sorted for the next trip out in the car!!

EDIT - Well bollocks. Looked it up and turns out it wasn’t even Frank Turner who did the awful version! Her ex told her Turner did it and he was wrong!!

Harry Potter's the obvious best for me, too. The franchise is obviously enormous but even after all that the core fanbase never seems to have lost this lovely, somewhat goofy bookclub for shy kids vibe.

My worst has been mentioned. It has to be Marvel. I saw a guy in work once who had a t-shirt which simply had the fucking dates of about two years worth of upcoming Marvel films printed on it. That was it.

I'll throw metal gatekeepers into the mix too, though. For all the positive press about metalheads being the nicest crowds, it's probably more accurate to say they're the safest crowds because a lot of that is derived from the fact that gigs are teeming with arms folded antisocial types protecting their patch and nodding their heads reverently. It depends largely on the genres but smaller scale festivals with darker lineups, black metal etc comes in for the worst of it. And again for all the positive "No, man, you see they're just using satan as a metaphor" press there's still plenty of bands full of grown men who take their left hand path stuff proper serious. It's mortifying.
