AEW Double or Nothing 2021 - March 30th

Fair fucks to AEW. Not a weekly viewer by any means but felt the need to gorge on all the content this weekend, and now I'm proper excited for tonight. @FelatioLips post nearly wants me to ring in sick in the morning. What stands out the most is how people in these threads are actually talking like these angles are really happening - shoots - with investment. When's the last WWE PPV that got that kind of discussion in one of its threads, as a show from top to bottom? I'd say you might need to go back to some of the WrestleManias from the HBK/Taker/Triple H series. And three out of those four hours usually stunk.

Thank christ AEW are around. Wish them all the best, but if they can just stay at this level - sustainable - that would be enough for me.

Overall this was an excellent show, with a few obvious weak spots.

Cody/Ogogo didn’t work at all, and I’m not entirely sure why they went with that match. As shit as he is, they were as well as just to give QT Marshall the PPV match rather than do what they did. Cody has become one of the weak spots of this company, and for me, his paternity leave can’t come soon enough.

Miro/Archer was also a little disappointing.

Now on to the good stuff...I really enjoyed Stadium Stampede, but I’m curious as to how other people view it given that it essentially meant removing the live audience for the final match. Personally, I didn’t care and thought the match was really entertaining, but I can see why you might feel differently.

The triple threat was also excellent, and had me believing that Cassidy would win the title. I’ve realised over the past few weeks that I actually am really invested in seeing that happen at some point. I wouldn’t have been against seeing that happen tonight, to be honest.

Baker winning the title gave me goosebumps, and even her hug with Schiavone was a genuinely sweet moment. The match was decent, and although Deeb/Riho was arguably better, that speaks to the quality of AEW’s women’s division more than anything else. I still think this should have closed the show, and that Baker should have been given fireworks/streamers post-match. She’s a heel, but fuck it, people wanted to see her win that title.

I was glad to see Jungle Boy win the Battle Royale, but the tepid reaction to Christian should surely encourage them to change approach with the guy. A heel Christian feuding with Jungle Boy (and subsequently the likes of Darby, Sammy, Page and Fenix) would actually be a lot of fun.

Christian as a heel is so much better.

Highlight of the show for me was Sting absolutely not missing a beat. When he tore his shirt off to reveal his proper ring gear and was in that sort of shape, and did that huge crossbody, wow.

Managed to watch it this morning spoiler free, cracking few hours of wrestling. No big in ring surprises, but doesn’t feel any lesser for it. It just worked

Haven't had a chance to watch the last 2 matches but fuck me, Cody and Ogogo killed that crowd stone dead for Miro/Archer and Baker/Shida. It's a shame as both matches were good and deserved a crowd that hadn't just been put to sleep.

As an aside, if you didn't watch the Buy-In, remedy that asap. Deeb Vs Riho was excellent and Heel Deeb is wonderful. It's been said a bunch of times but it's criminal that WWE had Deeb for so long and kept her backstage.

Absolutely cracking show. Almost perfect really.

It's kind of hilarious how shit Cody is. I was interested to see what kind of reaction a real crowd would give him and they gave him the reaction he deserved. Pre pandemic he was completely beloved by that audience, but after the past year of terrible self indulgent behaviour, arrogant promos, dull matches and ridiculous booking he has entirely squandered all that good will. No one gave a shit about him at all last night and he single handedly killed the hot crowd off. Shida and Baker had to work their arses off to win them back which luckily they did. Hopefully this is a wake up call to Cody to sort his shit out.

His performance on the pre-show media call was a masterclass in delusion, as he spoke about how aware he was about the level of support he had, and how he wasn’t going to turn heel as that would be fighting a losing battle. I’m not sure he’ll put this down to anything other than an exhausted crowd, but I hope he reassesses what he’s doing. I doubt it, though.

I've had a watch of the Sting match, and he looked great. They did a really good job protecting him, but he's also gotten himself into really good shape. I like how his paint is smudgy and dirty like Darby's. He does these really subtle things sometimes. It's a really nice touch.

What I took from the Cody / Ogogo match was that Cody brought in the USA stuff knowing full well that he wasn't going to do the job for Ogogo and the crowd surely wouldn't boo a good old American Boy, even bringing out the American Dream name. I know it's supposedly been denied, but I can totally see Cody and The Elite being at odds due to Kenny and The Bucks calling Cody out for his self indulgent bullshit along with Brandi's.

The camera cuts in the battle royal seemed to take a page out of Kevin Dunn's book at one point, they missed multiple spots through camera switches.

Caster got a tremendous reaction when he came out.

Other than the obvious that was a cracking night of wrestling.

Deeb Vs. Riho on the Buy In is maybe the best pre show match I've seen. Better than the AEW women's title match.

Page Vs. Cage was a perfectly fine PPV opener.

Britt Vs. Shida was good but wasn't a fan of the final stretch and imo should have ended with the belt stomp. The hug with Tony was a lovely moment.

Tag title match was really goid. Bucks are such natural pricks I don't think they should ever be faces.

TNT title match was ok.

Sting/Darby Vs. Scorpio/Page was fun and I really liked the finish.

Casino Battle Royal was a fun little match and was buzzing when Jungle Boy won. Guy is fucking over.

The moment they did the veteran stuff there was no way Cody was losing and taking multiple punches from Ogogo and still winning is peak fucking Cody. Just gonna erase this shit from memory.

World title match was excellent if maybe a little long. Right result and Pac and Cassidy were well protected.

JR saying Pac is from Wales and clearly fuming that Exalibur dared to correct him on air was hilarious.

Stadium Stampede though not quite as good as the original (dragged in a few spots) was still really enjoyable.

In the end I went to bed happy at 5am so job done and worth the price.

I was expecting it to be 3 hours long and once that passed and they still had 2 matches to go I decided to go to bed so still have them to watch.

Sting was great as was Shida, she really dragged Britt to a good match even though there were way too many near falls.

The Joker in the Battle Royale never fares well do they? Was surprised when Jungle Boy got the win but happy they went with the crowd favourite

Britt has had more than enough in the way of good matches for this narrative to hold any water. She’s excellent.

First observation was about the crowd; big contrast to a Rugby League game I attended last week where there was strict social distancing in place, wearing of masks and then antigen tests handed to fans on the way out. Happy to be corrected but didn’t look like similar measures were in place at Daily’s Place. What’s the Covid situation like in Jacksonville at the moment?

As for the show itself; what an ovation for Hangman.

Those “shuffle the deck” awkward silences kept killing the momentum in the Battle Royal, Paul Wight’s ever more frantic cries of “but where’s Hobbs?” made me laugh.

Fuck me, that throw on Darby Allin, thought Sting looked great.

Pac is Welsh now apparently.

Inner Circle entrance was great; felt the nightclub bit could have been improved by Tully Blanchard busting out the electric slide across the dance floor. Felt the main event dragged in places.

Entertaining show overall.
