StrongStyle
Imagine the absolute nerve ofĀ TottenhamĀ 'allowing' you to play in their league as a Founding Member because of your domestic accomplishments.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted April 19, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted April 19, 2021 I'm actually quite excited by this news and I'm not sure why there's such overwhelming opposition to the idea. Firstly, I'm embracing the chaos of these clubs potentially being kicked out of Europe and their domestic leagues. And I would be surprised if that actually happened, because those governing bodies need those clubs more than those clubs need the FA, UEFA and FIFA. The Premier League will become like a domestic Europa League and be far more interesting as a result, and who doesn't want to see that. If they didn't kicked out, it's not replacing the domestic leagues. It will run alongside them. My hope is that it would lead to the dismantling of the Champions League, which has become tedious until the quarter-final stage for years now. Most of these clubs qualify year on year for it, and it's stacked overwhelmingly in favour of the bigger clubs with more places for their countries and the seeding system anyway - this is just confirmation of that. Financially, there's already an endless gulf between the top teams and the rest as it is. This isn't going to make much of a difference to that. UEFA and FIFA and the domestic governing bodies could actually negotiate with the ESL to ensure some of that money filters down the league pyramids instead of reacting in such a kneejerk manner. Distribution of money has been a problem in the game for over 30 years now, this is actually an opportunity to come up with a solution with more money likely to come in at the top end. Sport has to evolve or it dies. Football was dying until the Premier League came along and now this is a chance to push it on further. And get rid of the League Cup. Mr_Danger
UEFA and the Premier League already fucked it for the smaller clubs 30 years ago they can hardly pissĀ and moan when it happens to them. It probably speaks more to my apathy with football in general but Iām not outraged inĀ the least and at least itās something new. When the world governing body of the sport are as crooked and greedy as FIFA are its hard not to make a case for others looking after themselves.Ā Ā I still reckon this will end in a compromise though. Some sort of legacy invitation to the champions league that ensures European legends like Arsenal and Spurs are guaranteed entryĀ and a greater share of the pie from the respective domestic leagues and UEFA. Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted April 19, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted April 19, 2021 This is going to be great. The only downside - PSG are sure to win the Champions League now.
Fog Dude
Was about to get excited at the prospect of Leeds, Sampdoria and Celta Vigo in the Europa League next season, then remembered the lowest-placed qualifierĀ from those 3 countries are due toĀ be going into the new Europa Conference League instead.Ā Not to mention that this might all be a ploy by the Dirty Dozen clubs to extract more concessions regarding the new Champions League format (from 2025) that UEFA are meant to be approving today. Mr_Danger
All the (definitely not paid by Rupert Murdoch) pundits on the phone ins and what not complaining about it not being competitive because of a lack of relegation have obviously never heard of any American team sports have they. With the Premier League not giving consent to this itās hard to imagine that these teams would make more money from this alone than the EPL and UCL combined. Iām guessing thereāll be some cup competitions and big oil country based tournaments to make up the short fall. Be quite cool if they do a better version of the club World Cup with invitations. Paid Members Jazzy G Posted April 19, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted April 19, 2021 @Mr_DangerI'm sure once Sky Sports have bought the rights to show it they'll be singing the praises of this exciting new era for European club football.Ā

Paid Members Jazzy G Posted April 19, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted April 19, 2021 I do wonder what the squads will look like if FIFA and UEFA manage to make good on their "no international football for players involved". Will it turn into the WCW of football with older players aiming for one last payday after the sun sets on their international career? Presumably the "clubs can still qualify" but is to try and present the fans with the possibility of clubs like Bayern, Ajax and PSG being able to play there without being involved with the actual administration of the league.Ā
stewdogg
There is a line in the press release that really got my goat. It said something like 'the pandemic has highlighted problems with the European football model', alluding to the fact the clubs aren't making as much money. Just this year, Arsenal gave Auba a contract of Ā£350k per week, De Bruyne probably getting the same or similar. Maybe not this year, but Ramsey supposedly on Ā£500k a week, De Gea on Ā£350k a week. Kane in excess of Ā£200k per week. God knows what Chelsea and City are paying their players.Ā Maybe if the clubs were run within their means this wouldn't be such an issue. Real and Barca are supposedly nearly a billion in debt each, I'm sure United are in heavy debt, Inter Milan folded their Chinese club due to huge debt. It's pure greed. That would be pretty sweet but obviously not. Talkshite are the āGlobal Audio Partnerā of the premier league whatever that means so thereās obviously going to be a lack of impartiality regardless of Murdochās involvement. Same with Sky Sports.Ā Ā I actually think Liverpool would get fucked if this ever goes through. All the money in the world isnāt going to help against oil money and if the good honest folk at UEFA canāt implement FFP then a league without it will be even worse.Ā Ā Ā

US sport has an almost socialist aspect when it comes to levelling up. Youāre the worst team? You get first pick of fresh talent.
