Related to the supercard mortality discussion, I recently discovered this factoid...

There's a ten-man elimination match on the second Survivor Series (1988) where one team are still all alive and the other are sadly all dead.

Jim Duggan, Jake Roberts, Tito Santana, Ken Patera and Scott Casey vs Andre the Giant, Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect, Harley Race and Dino Bravo,.

I know the answer to 'how the fuck is Jake Roberts still alive?' is DDP but it is still completely insane he had even made it to that point.

Has anyone ever "remade" a match? I sort of assume someone from the indy scene must have done a spot-by-spot recreation of a Misawa vs. Kobashi match or Savage vs. Steamboat or something. 

Also, have I remade this post? I kind of feel like I've asked this before but couldn't find it using the search so...

Long shot but does anyone know what were the names of the members of the High and Mighty team that competed for FutureShock Wrestling between 2010-2011? I know there is/was a tag team with that very same name composed of Mark Daniels & Martyn Grant but that one debuted a few years later and are based in Wales.

Does anyone know who has more technical knowledge than me explain why the camera/picture for WWE always looked clearer than WCW. I can't entirely explain it.

Thats interesting as i always thought the  cameras wcw used from 95 onwards have aged better than wwf stuff of that era. 
 

i may totally be misremembering but i thought i read that WCW recorded using HD cameras but obviously broadcast in SD.

There is a fair fair chance that my brain thinks WWF looks better on the basis on seeing DVD remastered versions of matches possibly. But there is a difference between the camera quality of WCW and WWF isn't there, I'm not just going off-piste mentally.

Why does it look different pre 1995 to you?

This is interesting. I would have always thought that WWF/WWE had the superior equipment. At the time of recording. The story has always been that WWE would invest in that element of production. Owing to the input they had from NBC/Dick Ebersol.

When did we start getting high quality video WCW programming in the UK? Was it with Nitro?

If the WWF couldn't sell out a stadium in 1991 for Wrestlemania 7. How did they manage to successfully fill the Hoosier Dome in 92? Cheap tickets, deals, free Chinese?

Mania VII was cursed. It didn’t help that immediately after Mania VI they said on telly “Oh, you liked Hogan vs Warrior? It’s never happening again.” Then during the Gulf War they positioned to running the Slaughter angle which, let’s be honest, was horrific exploitation of an actual war in which American soldiers were fighting and indeed dying. Business dropped considerably with Warrior on top, which didn’t help, and it’s probably hard to understand for Brits in 2024, but in 90-91 there was growing hysteria in the States that Iraq might orchestrate a terrorist attack on a major, well attended event - there was consideration of cancelling the SuperBowl. So while it’s bollocks that the venue was changed because of security concerns, there’s something in it, in that people thought a 100,000 crowd might not be the safest place for them in that climate. In the build up there was no clear and obvious “this will be your main event for Mania” realistically until the Royal Rumble, and just two weeks into February is when they announced the venue change having only sold about 12,500 tickets. So depending on what point in time you consider, people (a) weren’t sure if Hogan was coming back and didn’t want to go if Warrior was on top, (b) didn’t want to support the company profiteering from war or (c) didn’t want to get blown up.

Mania VIII, conversely, sold 5000 tickets on day 1 alone in July 1991. Buoyed, I imagine, by a covidesque “we couldn’t go this year so we MUST go next year” from those that were bomb-wary, and newsletter subscribers expecting Flair was on the way in and Mania VIII SURELY would be Hogan vs Flair. Along the way the televised hints at that direction probably helped, and in the home straight there was heavy suggestion that if you missed WrestleMania you might miss Hogans last match. All will have made it a hot ticket.

The irony being that those of us who WERE there live for The Hulksters last match, had no idea he’d be wrestling when we bought tickets to the show.

Adding to the "VII was cursed" element, I do wonder if it might have been different if the venues had been scheduled the opposite way around. 

Not to suggest Indianapolis is any kind of backwater, but there's a fair bit less competition for the entertainment dollar there than in LA for starters. Plus I wonder if the midwest might have had a bit less indignation than California over the content of the main event angle, combined with a bit more of an "I ain't letting no Iraqis scare me out of going to the matches" attitude than the LA crowd. And possibly a bit more of a (misguided, really) feeling of safety with it being a dome rather than open air.

@Statto There may be something in that. It would be unfair to say Indiana had been totally starved of major happenings, Indianapolis (Market Square Arena) having hosted the famed “The Main Event” Hogan vs Andre rematch, and Fort Wayne being the site of a major SNME taping in 1990 which included The Rockers’ phantom title win. And though they never got a PPV before Mania VIII, bordering states Illinois and Ohio obviously had. Though that said, it’s still a 3-4 hour drive from Indianapolis in one direction or the other to Rosemont or Richfield.

Alternatively if you believe in karma, blame Vince for VII being a box office disaster for the bravado with which he claimed in the promo videos for Mania VII “the event that will shatter all past Coliseum attendance records” and “more than 100,000 fans” (making it) “the biggest WrestleMania extravaganza of all time.”

At least he stopped short of the word “stupendous” mind.

WrestleMania 8 had about 14,000 people with complimentary tickets and in the last three weeks before the show (during which they sold about 25,000 tickets) the average price paid for a ticket was $10. So there were "only" about 23,000 who paid proper prices.
