What was the storyline reason for Bret and Shawn having an Iron Man Match at WrestleMania 12, rather than a regular singles bout?

It was seen as the ultimate test of who the best wrestler was. Most of the build focused on the stylistic differences between the two in terms of wrestling, training, age (to a degree; they very much positioned Michaels as coming of age and referred to his 'boyhood dream') and the like. There wasn't a specific storyline reason, in the sense of say, having a match end with interference and then deciding a steel cage blow-off is the way to settle things.

Has the Bret,Shawn ironman match aged well I remember watching it live as a teenager and loved but I wasn't a fan of the sudden death finish I was a fan of both Bret and Shawn but was rooting for Bret in the match.

Kind of. Vince was doing a face to face with Shawn and Bret on Raw 8 days after In Your House, Shawn conceded that Bret might be the best there ever will be but disagreed he's the best there is. Bret pointed out that he wouldn't have to beat Shawn, Shawn would have to beat him. Roddy Piper came out and declared that nobody was going to win lucky, it was going to be "most falls in the time limit" wins. Then once they both agreed, dropped the "it's an hour" bombshell.

Pretty divisive question considering opinion about the match varies wildly. You're going to get a split of ;

(a) Loved it then, and still do

(b) Loved it then, but think it hasn't aged well

(c) Thought it was shite at the time, but now regard it better, and ;

(d) Thought it was shite then, and still do.

I'm the latter. If you watch the highlight package at the end of Mania 12, it looks brilliant. It's the spots and sequences from the best 30 minute match you'd ever see, padded out to an hour by EXCESSIVE rest holds. A creative own goal of the highest order.

You start the fire ..that bring me back.. I've been meaning to watch 94 into 96 raws and supers again..I love the Tatanka and lex storyline from 94 as a teenager I was shocked that tatanka was a turn coat..so if the WWE network closes at the end of December I wonder how long it will take for old WWF shows and the ecw and wcw stuff to migrate over to Netflix

I believe the correct term now days is Native People.

As to the network moving, I doubt it will be that deep. I imagine big shows (old PPV’s) might get the move but I think the days of 90’s TV shows being on streaming like that will be gone. Same with WCW and ECW.

The Tatanka storyline was excellent , completely “got” me and i think it’s been  never given it’s dues. A shame he stunk in the ring by this point.

Ok... does anybody have love for the Hogan's Tna era..to be honest i prefer Hogan's Tna 2010-2013..to the current era i love tna and i still watch it but it's not the same as the pre/and hogans era .

I'm in the a) bracket on that one. I enjoyed it because it was presented as an athletic contest with an air of legitimacy. I liked everything from the acoustics of the ring, the special ringmat, the explanation of the rules with a mic'd up earl Hebner, the way Bret seems in control while Shawn gets frustrated, all of that. Furthermore, it held my Dad's interest for all 65 mins or so which is a feat in iteslf - he doesn't particularly like wrestling but he was invested in the contest and thought Bret was cheated out of his title. He's never been interested in watching a match since(!).

I know with hindsight everything is 20/20 but I completely did not see a Tatanka turn on the cards. Probably because Luger is such a believable heel. The only other turn I remember being on that level was The Rock at Survivor Series 1998.

I was thinking recently too about the Tatanka heel turn. At the time, I didn't see it coming at all but watching back the TV from the time, it's really, really obvious. Just goes to show how much age and experience ruins wrestling.

Agree on the Survivor Series 1998 turn. I didn't see that coming, even on the night, but I'd argue that's because it makes no sense whatsoever. Not the fact that Vince would want The Rock to be his guy, but just the lack of any hint or build to it. That does create a great moment but it's shallow, as Russo's stuff always was, and compounded by the Shane turn on Austin that also makes no sense whatsoever.

The Bret vs Shawn Ironman match is so frustrating. You’ve got two of the absolute best ever in ring performers, headlining the biggest show of the year, right around both of their physical primes. And they decided to hamstring it with the stipulation. Going in I was buzzing for it just for the novelty of it. The idea of a 60 minute match with multiple falls fascinated me. Basically applying football logic to wrestling but with most pinfalls and submissions within 60 minutes instead of most goals within 90 minutes. But with the luxury of being able to create the drama by choosing how many ‘goals’ would be scored and when, plus getting to decide the result beforehand. They had the opportunity to turn it into something truly incredible. Instead they booked a 0-0 draw and then it’s decided in overtime. Whenever I think of that match it just feels like they had an all time classic on their hands and they fumbled and wasted it.

Yeah you can kinda see it coming but 13 year old me was shocked it's the first storyline that hooked me in and for that reason I will always love the wwf new generation
