Just Some Guy Posted January 26, 2025 Posted January 26, 2025 I've seen that and just not realised it was her! Mind you, there isn't a duff performance in that film. Quote

Even the shit ones. Starting at the begining with The Pink Panther (1963). Welcome to the club. Mrs JB loves Pink Panther films so we ended up doing the lot including Son of and the Steve Martin ones last year. Some of the behind the scenes stuff... Spoiler with Blake Edwards and Sellers not being brought back, one film being basically a clip show of unused footage etc is more interesting than the poorer entries in the series. Quote

Abe_Knuckleball_Schwartz Posted January 26, 2025 Posted January 26, 2025 The Last Stop In Yuma County (SKY) really enjoyed this one. Neo Western type film which seems like a total throwback and builds the tension quite nicely Quote
cobra_gordo Posted January 27, 2025 Posted January 27, 2025 Finally saw Longlegs yesterday. God I love full weirdo Nicholas Cage. I had no idea what it was about and was hooked within a few minutes when Cage's first appearance made my blood run cold. Not sure if it's just me but it definitely felt like a few nods to The Silence Of The Lambs, at least early on, and a few moments where me and my wife were pointing at the scream shouting out loud. I'll definitely be watching it again. Quote
SaitoRyo Posted January 27, 2025 Posted January 27, 2025 Blink Twice I quite liked this! Decent story and solid performances. Visually arresting in parts. There were a couple of things I didn't like, and one short scene towards the end that really took me out of it, but definitely worth a watch if you've not seen it. Nightbitch Didn't do anything for me, to be honest. Wasn't as funny as I was hoping. Amy Adams is good in it, but it really felt like a missed opportunity. Quote
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted January 27, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 27, 2025 A Complete Unknown was decent enough. Timmy does a good Dylan impression, but it's nothing on Austin Butler's Elvis. I am not a Dylan fan so I don't know how well they captured him, and I know there is a lot of creative license with some of the story, but I didn't feel any emotion to it. Glad I saw it, but even though it's a better film then Better Man, that film had more fun going for it. More Bohemian Rhapsody than Rocketman in terms of enjoyable biopics. Quote
Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted January 27, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 27, 2025 Back In Action - Your usual Netflix made-by-algorithm slop, but I still had some fun with it. Nice to see Cameron Diaz again. I absolutely won't remember a thing about it by next week though. Here - It's been completely panned but I thought it was okay. The single-camera gimmick doesn't always work and it's very schmaltzy, but sometimes I like schmaltz. Decent. Get Away - Nick Frost and Aisling Bea in a horror-comedy? Count me in! Unfortunately it's one of those films that doesn't live up to the premise at all, really badly directed at times with a narrative shift around two-thirds in that anyone who has watched a horror film in the last 10 years could see coming. Shite. Maria - I just can't get on with Pablo Larraín. I thought there was a more interesting film bursting to get out here but for the most part it's meandering, aimless and quite boring, really. Serves me right for watching a film about bloody opera. Quote

It's already available on the usual torrent/streaming sites if you want to check it out. Nowhere within 20 miles of me was showing it so I had to go that route. I forgot to mention in my last post; Paul Bettany gives an absolutely awful performance in Here. So it's worth watching for that alone! Quote
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted January 27, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 27, 2025 @Lorne Malvo I really like Aisling Bea, but I don’t think she’s been in any film that has not been awful. Quote

Whilst her film career is lacklustre she did do the dance with Paul Rudd to Rick James’ Give it To Me in Living With Yourself so she’ll forever hold a place in my heart. Quote
davertfnewman Posted January 27, 2025 Posted January 27, 2025 For a guy who has a degree in film, television and radio studies (third - I had kidney stones towards the end and phoned it in), there are a lot of big films I've not watched, however on the weekend I thoroughly enjoyed... The Long Good Friday The music is in my head for the rest of the week now. Legitimately jumpy moments when people are getting slashed or bottled. Bob Hoskins convincingly plays off trying to raise yourself up while acting like a fucking animal. Great scenes as well where there is no dialogue for about the first ten minutes and of course at the end, which is a masterclass in facial acting. Quote
Dr. Alan Grant Posted January 27, 2025 Posted January 27, 2025 The Witches - haven’t seen this since I was about 10 and at the time I wouldn’t have appreciated how spectacular Angelica Huston looked (pre-transformation). She’s the best thing in it by far, the rest of the film I can take or leave. 2/5 The Holdovers (first watch) - well, the UKFF was right. It’s a lovely film. Worryingly, I see far too much of myself in Paul Giamatti’s character. 4/5 This Is 40 (first watch) - I’m pretty sure this film didn’t have a script. Just Judd Apatow saying “I don’t know, just wing it I guess” repeatedly. I have no time anymore for these improv heavy comedies. Over two hours as well! Get fucked. Nice to see Albert Brooks and John Lithgow however. 2/5 Nosferatu (first watch) - I‘m not a huge fan of his previous films, (particularly The Northman), but this I loved. Creepily beautiful and I wouldn’t have recognised who was playing the Count if I didn’t already know. 4/5 Purple Rain (first watch) - Morris Day is a fantastic bastard, Apollonia is stunning and Prince is not a terrible actor. He’s not great either, but better than I thought he’d be. The performance of the title track was fantastic. Cool bike too. 3/5 Arrietty (first watch) - I’m going to have to do a big Ghibli marathon soon. Evidently there are two English language dubs of this one. I watched the Saorise Ronan/Olivia Colman/Mark Strong one. There’s another with Amy Poehler and Will Arnett, which doesn’t sound nearly as charming. 4/5 The Carry On film marathon is still ongoing and approaching the end thank god. I’ve gone past the middle era where they’re all pretty good and I’m now in the final years where the quality has massively dropped. Columbus awaits me… Quote
