Local Hero (first watch) - I just know that there’s going to be someone on here who adores this film and will chastise me for not thinking more highly of it. I liked it. I didn’t love it. Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood for a slow paced, genteel film where very little happens. I thought Burt Lancaster was wonderfully eccentric and it was nice to see Peter Reigert in a lead role. I’ll give it another go in a few years time, but for now it’s one of those “yeah, it’s alright” films for me. 3/5 (forgive me)

I love it, but I have to admit that a big part of that is that I'm a big fan of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler, and I love the main theme. But it's a decent film. A young Peter Capaldi puts in a decent shift as well.

To go back to We Live In Time I watched that recently and really enjoyed it. Might be my first time seeing Florence Pugh in something, which seems unbelievable, but she was really strong in this so maybe I need to seek out more. The skipping around in time worked for me, and I think helped break up the structure and have a stronger mix of levity and heartbreak rather than a linear trajectory.

My wife wouldn't brave the cold for Nosferatu last night so I let her pick something from my collection instead and we watched Rian Johnson's Brick. A noir played straight but set in a high school, it's absurd but everybody commits and it works. It's not an all-time great, you can feel the inexperience both behind and in front of the camera, but Joseph Gordon Levitt does a great job as a noir hero and Nora Zehetner is a believable femme fatale. High school me would have fallen for it immediately.

I've seen a fair few people talk shit about Orlok's moustache. I liked it! And it was historically accurate for a Romanian nobleman too. I like that he looks so much like Vlad the Impaler. Why his hair and eyebrows have rotted off but his moustache has remained though I couldn't tell you.

It’s not that it wasn’t a fab tash, more that Sonic 3 came out at the same time and Papa Robotnic looks very similar to Orlok.

RRR (Netflix). An absolute barn-burner of an action film which also has quite moving moments and rightly portrays the colonial British as the biggest arseholes imaginable. It’s pretty long, and I wasn’t sure how they could keep going with the high spots over such a long period, but they pulled it off and it was a total blast.

I'm not going to watch RRR because I can't stand Bollywood films but I saw an Indian action film last year called Kill that was amazing. Saw it described as the most violent film India has ever made. Plus it didn't have any songs, nor was it 17 and a half hours long.

We're a house divided tonight as my wife is watching Wicked and our housemate is watching Newsies so I've hidden in my office to continue my run of Mission Impossibles with Fallout. This was fantastic. I'm not a particular fan of Cavill as a leading man but in a supporting role as an annoying prick/heinous bastard he's got the perfect face/accent for it. Excited to be done with these in time to watch the final one on the big screen.

Enjoyed this too. The two main performances elevate this massively, as its a fairly standard storyline.

Pugh in particular is wonderful.

They've said it won't be the last one. That's why Dead Reckoning is no longer Dead Reckoning: Part One.

I watched A Different Man tonight. I thought it was pretty good, but I’m disappointed all the accolades are going on Sebastian Stan’s performance. He was pretty good, but thought Adam Pearson was brilliant. I’ve not seen any of his acting work before and thought he made the most of the role. It’s an odd film though.
