Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted January 2, 2025 Moderators Posted January 2, 2025 Super Mario Brothers movie. This is actually really enjoyable and a decent film, and I'm so damn thankful for this as my youngest is completely Mario obsessed atm and has already watched it 4 times over the Xmas holidays. (He got a Mario onesie for Xmas and has worn it every single day, I have to wash it overnight when he's asleep). Finally got to watch Holdovers this evening. Totally lived up to my big expectations! My wife found it a bit too sad though, which is fair. Went to see Paddington 3 at the cinema last week. Pretty poorly written compared with the previous efforts but the excellent performances made it enjoyable nonetheless. Olivia Coleman was particularly brilliant. Red One was better than I thought it would be. Not sure if I'd say I recommend it but it was the first Xmas film I watched in the festive period and it did a good enough job of getting me in the mood. It's no Christmas Chronicles though.. Quote
Paid Members Chris B Posted January 3, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 3, 2025 I suspect the new Nosferatu won't be for everyone. But holy hell, it was very much for me. I loved The VVItch, and was really excited at Robert Egger's ability to convey nameless, faceless evil and fear - which made him taking on this remake really intriguing. It's jaw-droppingly beautiful in terms of shots, constantly. The use of colour (or lack of it) is really impressive, and the specific references to the original are great. For my money, this is one of the all-time Dracula adaptations (along with the original and the 70s remake). It's also really smart in terms of what it adds, and gives Ellen/Mina a lot more agency than previous versions. I also really liked this review, that talked about how it's very much a story about abuse. https://www.dreadcentral.com/.../robert-eggers-nosferatu.../ That said, it's a slow starter. Very slow. And it may assume quite a bit of knowledge - I was in my element, but it may well leave some people cold. Quote
Paid Members Carbomb Posted January 3, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 3, 2025 Only thing I didn't like about the Super Mario movie was Spoiler how badly they jobbed Donkey Kong out to Bowser. He should've got a bit more of a shine than that. Not saying he should've gone over, just a bit more than a shove. Other than that, superb film. Quote
Merzbow Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 Bodies Bodies Bodies is dogshit, like an AI wrote how a bunch of Gen Z's act even though half the cast is like 30. Not even Rachel Sennott purposely bouncing her tits about can save this. Y2K is dogshit, like an AI was fed a prompt to do nothing but make very lame references to 1999 while leaving out any kind of genuine humour. Not even Fred Durst playing Fred Durst can save this. Nothing particularly memorable but a bunch of cunts dying in mysterious and unusual ways was enough to keep me going. There’s a slightly better similar film on Netflix called What’s Inside that involves body swapping and dark shenanigans with a bunch of cunts at a party. Quote
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted January 3, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 3, 2025 Bodies Bodies Bodies was a solid 6/10. When I can’t figure out whodunnit in a whodunnit it’s at least a 4 star film, unless it was completely implausible. This made me laugh a few times so gets as pass. me and Onyx2 are off to see Nosferatu tonight and I’ve only just realised I’ve never seen an Eggers before, is that going to be an issue? Quote

Probably not. It'll just be a slow-burner, a little glacial at times, and a little formal in places. He's very divisive though - if it works for you, it might *really* work for you. And if it doesn't, it might leave you completely cold. Quote

I would definitely have walked out, and I don't think I've walked out of one since Assassination Nation. Quote

DavidB6937 Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 Kids wanted to watch IF. Wasn't too fussed. Ended up crying. Fucks sake. Not letting them choose again. Quote

Not letting them choose again. See I thought IF was one of the years biggest disappointments. Predictable, not funny and overly sentimental. @Chris B I’m still not decided on Nosferatu. Probably the best shot film this year, and I’ve seen some good uns, but I thought some of the performances were terrible, verging on something out of a comedy, but it was definitely tense and spooky and I ended up enjoying it a lot, but not as much as others I’ve seen this year. Also Spoiler Unfortunately that as great as Bill Skarsgard was once again, the fact Nosferatu looked like Papa Robotnik from Sonic 3 was unfortunate. Though the slow Jaws like reveal was very appreciated. Quote
Paid Members Onyx2 Posted January 3, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 3, 2025 Nosferatu is undoubtedly beautiful, the drained palette being both appropriate and a great nod to the '22 version, and exactly the film Eggers wanted to make. Regarding the ending Spoiler That's where it fell a little flat for me. The protagonists describe what they are going to do, and then they do it. There's no real satisfying denouement, or last minute rug pull by the villain, and therefore it's a bit "... oh. Is that it?" when it happens. It doesn't derail the mood or anything and it will probably bother me less on a rewatch, but it was a little underwhelming. It's well worth seeing at the cinema though. Being trapped in your seat is very much the vibe. I'm not sure what you mean by assumed knowledge though? Quote
