Disney animated (and the direct to video sequels)

We’ve been doing this along with the Disniversity podcast. They’ve slowed the pace a lot in the last year or so, but we just got to Chicken Little, which is absolutely the worst one so far. Good luck with that!

Didn’t come close to completing my target of 365 films for the year.

I've had a similar target for the past few years but never come close to actually achieving it, even throwing in a few shorts along the way to try and help out.  I tend to start out all guns blazing at the start of the year, but then come the summer time, with one thing and another, it tends to fall apart.  According to my Letterbox, I ended up watching 254 this year but that does include documentaries.

169.) 8 Mile (8)
170.) Superbad (10)

Best films were probably Perfect Days, All Of Us Strangers (really not sure I can watch that again, it still haunts me) and The Iron Claw. All a right laugh.

Poor Things was absolutely shit, and so were Sisters and Masterminds.

Finished off the year with a rewatch of the LOTR trilogy and I know this is nothing new, but they really are the best, and I don't think we will ever see the likes of them again (epic film making, concurrent year releases etc) "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you" floods of tears as always.

Oh, and the now seemingly traditional end of year watch of Superbad as that's the best.

Really couldn't be arsed with the shit Christmas films, so sorry to the thousands of you who were looking forward to that.

For reasons that would become clear, I will opt not to share how many I watched last year.

How many films a day do you average? I used to do 2-3 a day in Uni and that was my absolute peak and a lot of it was carried by marathon Footy Manager sessions. I tend to only curate my watchlist based on recommendations here and podcasts these days and I’m probably lucky to get through 2-3 a week. I blame TikTok.

It's 2 or 3 a day during work days. 1 or 2 on non-work days. I did around 900 last year but there were quite a lot of shorts and stand up shows in that too.

How do you manage this on a work day? Do you work part time or have them on while working or something? Doesn't seem possible!

I have them on in the background. The work I do doesn't require my undivided attention, so it's pretty easy to do.

Demi Moore double-bill to kick off 2025 with Striptease and The Substance.

Glad I watched The Substance last as I didn't fancy sleeping nightmare free for the first week of the new year.

131 last year which is more than usual, attention issues mean it can take a couple of goes to get through some films even if I love them.

Started the year strong with Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 which while being essentially an exploitation flick is surprisingly experimental, especially with the cinematography which is just beautiful and the use of music is perfect. Meiko Kaji is wonderful, between this series, Stray Cat Rock and Lady Snowblood she's one of the best at playing a badass, she's devastatingly cool.

Recently watched Why Him? Some appalling moments of people scripted to talk in ways nobody ever would about another’s daughter/wife/mum for the sake of laughs, but good performances by Cranston and Key and enough genuine laughs to make it bearable. Trigger warning : Adam DeVine.

Also, Meet Me Next Christmas. Jesus wept. Fairly risible plot goes reasonably the way you expect until you get completely blown off the rails by a third act side quest that really stretches the realms of believability. Suffers badly from none of the characters being remotely likeable, I was half convinced everyone was scripted to play up to offensive black or gay stereotypes until I read that Pentatonix are a real band and were playing themselves. Probably the worst film I’ve seen since Transformers 4.

Finally, umm, Transformers : Rise Of The Beasts (6). Definitely among the better live action offerings though that’s not saying much. A mate told me it was closer to Bumblebee than to 5 and that’s fair, and there was some good fan service in places although it’s always juxtaposed to how badly things were messed around with prior. Like, we got Unicron (touches of the score resembling his theme were nice but too subtle), but his herald couldn’t be Galvatron as we’ve fucked him up in the fourth film, and it can’t be the Matrix that stops Unicron as due to timeline jiggery fuckery, it’s still buried in Jordan until the events of the second film. Oh… McGuffin. Cube…. Matrix…. Pillars…. Seed…… Key. Passable fun, regardless.

Carry-On

'Better than Die Hard', is it? It's obviously not (not even close), but it was a decent enough way to kill time while I was ill over Christmas as it moves at a good pace. It's no Die Hard, mind.

Married to the Mob

Hadn't seen this in forever, but had some vivid memories of it as it was one of those films I watched randomly on TV when I was in my early teens. It's a lot of fun and Michelle Pfeifer is great in it. I really enjoy the idiosyncratic style of Jonathan Demme's late 70s and 80s stuff.

The film is centred around dodgy James Franco and your trigger warning is the adorable Adam DeVine?

Jesus Christ that Dead or Alive film adaptation is worse than I thought it would be, Kevin Nash somehow being one of the low points, too. Devon Aoki could seemingly never act well but she's got an extreme coolness about her, shame this film couldn't even capitalise on that. I only watched it as I saw a great little history of the games on YouTube and got curious..
