Now I've seen it, would have been better off getting depressed. Saw this last night. Really wish I hadn't. In better news I finally took up @Devon Malcolm's suggestion and watched The Guest. My word, Dan Stevens is tremendous, as is Maika Monroe. I can't believe this film eluded me for so long, just tremendous all round. Quote

Mr_Danger Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 With his performances in Godzilla and Abigail I think Dan Steven’s might be the best we have to offer from these shores. By rights he should be leading in shit rom coms not hamming it up being the best thing in B-movies. Might actually subject myself to The Apostle some time this week. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 28, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 28, 2025 He's always good. He pops up in all kinds of stuff. He did a superb German sci-fi romcom a few years ago called I'm Your Man where he plays a pleasure robot. And he was great as a villain in Cuckoo alongside Hunter Schafer. This year he's doing a biopic about the founder of Bumble, a horror film with Al Pacino, and an action film directed by Adam Wingard with Eric from Tim & Eric, Sgt. Powell from Die Hard and Rebecca Hall. Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted January 31, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 31, 2025 Watched Come and See last night. Might watch something lighter today to cheer me up. Like Schindler's List or Irreversible. Fuck me. Quote

Jeez. Even you mentioning it gives me the shivers. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 31, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 31, 2025 (edited) So I finally settled on my 2024 'Oscars' as I've watched everything I needed to, at last. List's below. Honestly could barely choose between The Holdovers and The Zone of Interest. Mikey Madison wasn't that obvious a choice because Courtney Eaton was amazing in Parachute. Support performance was really tough. Robot Dreams was a clear winner. Sara Montpetit will be a huge star. Paid Members Jesse Posted January 31, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 31, 2025 Went to see Companion today which was significantly better than Flight Risk but still wasn't much of anything. A fun time, with some actors I enjoyed seeing on the screen but a story that doesn't do much more than serve. Not bad, but not one I'd seek out again. Sophie Thatcher's face gets a lot of close-ups, which adds half a star. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 31, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 31, 2025 Companion (cinema) Enjoyed it a lot, much funnier than I expected. Probably doesn't stand up to close scrutiny and it's not much that hasn't been seen before but it's a great time. Cast is excellent, Sophie Thatcher marvellous as reported, again. Elevation For some reason Anthony Mackie loves these B-pic sci-fi films and they're usually quite good. This has a gimmick that's never really explained and it's bizarrely hinting at a sequel at the end (never gonna happen, nobody's seen it) but it's a decent time and Morena Baccarin is in it. Into the Deep Decided to shoulder some of the burden of watching appalling shark films in solidarity with @Frankie Crisp. Actually, I've seen worse than this but is still bad. Somebody found Stuart Townsend. Reverse the Curse David Duchovny directs himself, Tom Hardy 2 and Rosa Diaz in a dying dad baseball comedy-drama. A total 3 and a half star film if ever I saw one. Pretty funny, one of the best Duchovny performances I've seen, if not the best. Riddle of Fire Weird little Goonies-esque adventure with a medieval / fantasy tone to it. Just a strange film and unnecessarily long but also really charming and funny. Shouldn't work at all but it absolutely does. Lio Tipton plays a witch and they put a spell on me I tell you hwhat! Late Bloomers Karen Gillan loves the odd low budget comedy-drama and I love her in them. Just a nice little film, fairly predictable but also has a lovely ending. Take Cover Scott Adkins, his annoying mate and a couple of sex workers get trapped in a plush hotel room by a sniper hired by Alice Eve. Very stupid and very limited in what it can do but quite enjoyable. Quote
Paid Members Jesse Posted January 31, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 31, 2025 As a teenager who watched Queen of the Damned at a very formative time I was so certain that Stuart Townsend was going to be a huge star. Quote

There's still a timeline where it happened. If he hadn't completely fucked up a handful of days into filming for Lord of the Rings maybe, just maybe, he wouldn't have pretty much disappeared. Quote
Merzbow Posted February 1, 2025 Posted February 1, 2025 Companion was great fun, shame the last round of promotion spoilt the films "twist". It's had a surprising amount of genuine laughs although I think I was the only one laughing in the cinema... my first time in Leamington's Vue. Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher had some excellent chemistry, hope they both blow up and get some big roles after this, they seem to be lovely people too. Quote
