Paid Members LaGoosh Posted November 26, 2024 Paid Members Posted November 26, 2024 Seeing all the posters for The Day of The Jackal TV show (and having no intention of watching anything with that cunt Eddie Redmayne in) I decided to watch the original film. What a banger! A fast paced, methodical, no fat or bullshit and tense thriller which they just don't seem to know how to make any more. The lead actor is great - he mostly comes across as a slightly comical and soft guy until he needs to act where he is cold, lifeless and terrifying. 2 hours 20 but it races by. Quote

Edward Fox is a superb actor, as is his brother James. They're also gammon cunts - James is Laurence Fox' father. Mind you, Edward produced Emilia Fox, so he did something good that wasn't just his acting. Quote
cobra_gordo Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 (edited) Had a shocking day yesterday mental health wise, real rock bottom stuff, so my wife and daughter surprised me with a trip to see Wicked at the cinema to cheer me up. It's fucking BRILLIANT. I've seen the stage show twice so I'm already familiar with the plot and the songs but it was amazing to see it fleshed out on the big screen, with all the details at the university and the Emerald City, it's really beautiful to look at. The two leads are both amazing but Ariane Grande in particular really surprised me. There's a couple of nice cameos too. I don't think I stopped smiling for the whole run time and at just over two and a half hours, it's a beast of a film but it's nicely paced. I honestly can't fault it, my only gripe is there's a few extra pauses during Defying Gravity to do plot stuff which, if you're familiar with the song, does mess with the momentum a bit but that's about it. I was sat for the last ten minutes or so trying to not burst in to tears. I honestly can't wait to see it again. Never saw the show or read the book (wife hated the show, loved the book), so I went in with no real expectations. And will concur it is as good as you've said and I have already seen it twice. But as good as I though Ariane was, I thought Cynthia Erivo was incredible. Her facial acting, amazing. Quote
Paid Members Onyx2 Posted November 27, 2024 Paid Members Posted November 27, 2024 I can't stand that you're all enjoying it so much. I had no interest in the film, I saw the musical about 15 years ago and didn't get a lot out of it. I was quite happy to send the rest of the family out to see it, but all this gushing praise from odd corners is egging me on to see it. Bah. Quote

Oh yeah, not to take away from Cythia Erivo, she's unbelievably good in it, I was just blown away by how good Ariane Grande was as I had zero expectations from her and she knocked it out of the park. 2 minutes ago, Onyx2 said: I can't stand that you're all enjoying it so much. I genuinely want to watch it again at least once more at the cinema, it's that good. My wife's working all weekend, might take myself off on my own for a second viewing. Go in with an open mind and an empty bladder and give it a go. Quote
DavidB6937 Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Yeah i had 0 interest in it. Never seen the musical. But part of me wants to see it now and I'm worried I'll cry my eyes out if I do. Stop it. Quote
Mr_Danger Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Musicals are obviously shit (apart from Dirty Dancing, South Park and the Greases) but hearing that Wicked has the franchising formula of a Marvel really quells my curiosity to see what all the praise is about. That and the runtime and it only being part one. Isn’t going to feed in to a Wizard of Oz remake and a big extended universe as well? Quote

What I do know, in the admittedly little I know myself, is Wicked was the first in a series of books. My wife enjoyed the first 2, but didn’t like the 3rd so stopped. I don’t think there had been much thought of adapting the other books in other mediums, but maybe it’s a possibility? I hope not as then I can just have these 2 parts and enjoy them. Quote
Paid Members Carbomb Posted November 27, 2024 Paid Members Posted November 27, 2024 I've as much interest in it as I have any musical, which is next to none, but I am enjoying seeing how much it's making the GBeebies crowd cry. Quote

Thankfully I’ve managed to avoid this hoo-hah. Something about it being woke no doubt. Or is it because there’s, shock horror, a black actress in the lead? Quote

Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted November 28, 2024 Moderators Posted November 28, 2024 (edited) I haven't seen that at all. Not everything is about race. The main wokeness offence it seems to be causing from what I've read is that it's quite unapologetically queer. There's a side order of the munchkins not being little people too. Any criticisms I've seen of Cynthia Erivo have centered around her weird behaviour when doing press for the film, which is absolutely warranted. Edited November 28, 2024 by Chest Rockwell Quote

Yeah all I've seen is that. The strange things she complains about on her social media etc. I'd never even seen her or heard of her before so my first exposure was the weird social media shit. But having watched a lot of the interview stuff she doesn't seem quite so bad. Although definitely a person with a strong personality who could easily clash with people. Quote

Fairly often, too. Quote
