Wallace and Gromit in The Lost Trousers

I know it's only half an hour long, but it might be the greatest film ever made.

Watched Trap tonight and loved it. Seen it described as Josh Hartnett doing a Hitman level for most of its runtime and that felt very accurate. Thought this was a pretty fun, breezy watch with good tension at points throughout and Hartnett doing a great job in the central role. Not a movie that will stick with me, but one I had a good time watching.

I watched this at the weekend too. I will give any M. Night film a watch because he's often got a decent idea, though his execution is very patchy. This one is no exception, and I'm with Scorchers here on the rating but for different reasons. The first 'half' can't decide how much information to give you, so it's hard to figure out who to root for. And the second half goes to shit with weird escapes and everything grinding to a halt so we can explain the backstory featuring a character we barely know.

I do like the arena stuff, and in fact a whole film just around the literal captive audience with a more straight 90s thriller type execution would've been good fun. This is just messy.

Neat idea, poor script. Josh Hartnett is great though. Incredible eyebrow acting.

yeah, if anything @Onyx2 it made me wish we saw old Josh in more roles. He was great in this. Have you seen Knock at the Cabin? It was M Nights previous release toTrap and had Big Dave and Ron Weasley and I thought it was decent viewing.

Yes Cabin was probably his best in years.

I never like to speak ill of Shyamalan on here for fear of upsetting @Scott Malbranque but I fell asleep during Cabin in the Woods and am very sure I didn't miss a thing.

Lone Star

First rewatch in something like twelve years. It's still a masterpiece and a total triumph of 90s independent cinema. I love everything about it and found myself totally engrossed in the multiple story threads. It's so rich thematically and so well written, building to a conclusion that you sense is coming, but is still an absolute gut punch when it does.

Everyone is fucking class in in it as well. What a cast, by the way - Chris Cooper, Matthew McConaughey, Kris Kristofferson, Elizabeth Pena. Even Frances McDormand stops by for a scene, because why not?

I would recommend this to anyone who hasn't seen it before. If you're like me and it's been a while, watch it again.

Tough Enough

Dennis Quaid is an aspiring country music singer-songwriter who can't catch a break and decides to enter a Fort Worth Toughman tournament in an attempt to win some money (so he won't have to get an actual job while trying to pen a hit tune).

Starts interesting but quickly turns into your typical underdog sports movie. This was one of a slew of boxing films to come out due to the success of Rocky and its sequels and was actually marketed with the tagline 'Rocky without rules!'.

Well, I don't know about that but it's missing a lot of stuff Rocky has, even though it's not a total waste of time or anything. Pam Grier plays a supporting role, as does sketchy promoter Warren Oates (in his final film performance). Ably directed by veteran Richard Fleischer, with Quaid carrying the film thanks to a decent, believable performance.

Juror #2 (cinema)

Solid! We used to have films like this all the time and when the studios bury what few we still make then we know why we don't get them anymore. A couple of really stupid moments but sturdy and even-handed and Nicholas Hoult is excellent.

Poolman (Prime)

As wretched as reported. I don't expect to see another Chris Pine directed film for some time. A terrible mess of The Big Lebowski and Chinatown homages with a ridiculously stacked cast.

Daddio

Locke but hornier. Never completely convinces but Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn have good chemistry and it's surprisingly frank and not built on threat. I'm not opposed to Dakota Johnson as a blonde either. Ending is lovely.

Breathe (2024)

Disappointing follow-up from the guy who directed See You Yesterday (on Netflix). Very dull and predictable and badly acted, a complete waste of Milla Jovovich too.

Sleeping Dogs (Prime)

Fat Era Russell Crowe delivers its first disappointment. A decent idea (ex-detective with memory loss investigates an old case) but not sleazy or fun enough like it would have been in the 1990s. Karen Gillan is the only one who understands the assignment although I don't know why she's in this.

Brothers (2024) (Prime)

The guy who made the lovely Palm Springs follows it up with an extremely unfunny crime comedy that wastes a cracking cast. Just watch Logan Lucky.

The Count of Monte-Cristo (2024)

The 18,095th version of the story. 3 hours long and yet still manages to underuse some of the characters. Still quite enjoyable though and it didn't feel all that long, the cast is superb. The most expensive French production of all time and the money is well spent. Anamaria Vartolomei will be a huge star.

Rose (2024)

One of the very small number of films about schizophrenia that is thoughtful and representative on the subject. Very funny and sad in the right doses, a great lead performance from Sofia Grabol.

Adagio (Netflix)

Enjoyable crime thriller from Stefano Sollima, who's becoming a really dab hand in this genre. Looks stunning, crunchingly violent, well paced. Just my thing.

Been kicking myself for missing this at the cinema. It's one of my favourite books.
