I'd honestly forgotten the movie even existed until they made the sequel and I still didn't care then. It's a really strange choice of movie to do a sequel for.

I think we're at the point now where anything that gets mentioned in the pub in a 'remember this film?' way is fair game for a legacy sequel. They're doing a Days Of Thunder sequel! I liked Days of Thunder but at no point since seeing that film have I thought 'I'd love to know what Cole Trickle is up to now'.

It's a Tom Cruise movie so chances are it'll still be good, but I'd much rather everyone put their time, effort and money into something original.

This has reminded me that Hocus Pocus got its own legacy sequel a couple of years ago - which I think was largely forgotten the day after it came out.

Edit: Although maybe not, because they're doing a third one?

I'll be honest, I completely forgot about that too. And in looking it up, The Craft also had a 2020 sequel come out!

Perfectly obvious now that the reason they're doing Practical Magic 2 is because every other sodding witches movie has had a sequel years after the fact.

I got dragged around Primark for an hour on Saturday and spotted Practical Magic merch. I thought it was the most baffling of their many baffling tie-ins because it's a film I barely remembered existed and only realised there's a sequel when I looked for the Coyote vs. Acme times last night.

Out of sheer morbid curiousity, and probably because I had such a blast watching the original the other day, I had a watch of Airplane 2025, originally known as Mile High Club. It's an Asylum production, which probably tells you everything you need to know about it. A girl is getting married off to a guy she's never met, and she's flying to the wedding with her friends, who've decided they all want to get laid on the plane. It's proper Channel 5 11pm stuff. It was presumably renamed when Asylum figured they'd get more eyes on it by trying to pass it off as a new Airplane movie around the time of the Naked Gun release. Oh, also it's set in the 70s, as evidenced by the presumably copyright free 70s style music soundtrack and weird 70s style scene transition effects.

Resident Evil

Zach Cregger taking the absolute piss with Sony's money by rebooting Resident Evil as a comedy. Had a great time, would watch a bunch more of these.

Yep Resident Evil is a blast. Tight 90 minutes, spot on pacing, funny, some spectacular set pieces and some brilliantly executed jump scares. Actually got a round of applause at the end which I have never experienced at a cinema screening ever. I didn’t join in because I’m not an American, but it was certainly well received.

It’s funny that raging internet folks are complaining that it doesn’t adapt a specific game or use the characters when it is the most authentic adaptation of Resi I could possibly imagine. It feels like speed running a resident evil game and is packed with loving homages to the franchise without having to go “ooh look that document says Wesker on it”. It evokes the experience of playing the games rather than referencing the lore and it is far far better for it. The use of perspective, having to pass through an abandoned vehicle blocking the way, padlocks being near-indestructible and requiring specific branded keys, the tease of an NPC escort mission, the entire mission he’s on being video gamey as hell, the first person slow door opening etc etc. It is Resident Evil through and through but isn’t insufferably beating you over the head with Easter eggs. Spot on for me.

Yeah, Resident Evil is probably the most fun I’ve had at the cinema all year.

Normally, the idea of seeing something on the opening night with a packed screening would be my worst nightmare, but I suspected this would be the exception and was proven 100% correct.

It was a wild time with everyone gasping, jumping and laughing along. The chap in front of me looked like he was close to having a breakdown! The amount his chair was jolting with each jump scare, it was like his own private 4DX screening!

I hope the acclaim this will inevitably receive cheers Zach Cregger up. It’s been depressing seeing how much the idiot internet fans have chipped away at his enthusiasm.

He’s absolutely nailed this and the morons on Twitter are categorically wrong for crying about it being a story told within the Resident Evil universe rather than an attempt to directly adapt the lore of the games. It blows my mind that’s been the primary complaint. I love the games as much as anyone, but the lore is a fucking mess. The very reason you can’t really adapt it into a coherent TV show or film is because it wouldn’t hold up to any type of standards or scrutiny.

Any and all enjoyment I get out of replaying the games is usually in spite of the lore, which is why this works so well. It perfectly captures how it feels to play the games. Running around screaming in panic, never having enough ammo, always feeling like you’ve just survived the last setpiece by the skin of your teeth.

If you don’t enjoy this because no-one mentions, “Leon Kennedy,” get directly in the bin.

I blame you guys hyping it up. Because I thought the first 2/3 of Resident Evil were really good. I can’t remember the last time I got such good jump scares in a movie. But I thought the final act was a bit meh. And I’m not completely sure why, but I remember feeling the same with Weapons. It will definitely be watched again and I was surprised with the direction

Being a bit of a cross between The Thing and Evil Dead 2

. Also I thought the film looked beautiful, especially the bit pre title card. He’s a talented director for sure, but he’s not topped Barbarian for me yet.

That said I think anyone who wants a movie adaptation of the games will never been satisfied. The concept of this was great.
