I've never really followed or subbed to any of Dave's stuff, or Alvarez for that matter, but you'd have to think he must be loving all this Punk stuff in recent months, right? Punk is basically Harry and Meghan wrapped into one for wrestling's version of those gossip mags you see on the shelves in Tesco.

The question is, how much of the shit they peddle is actually accurate? Where does he get the information from? It surely can't all just come from wrestlers with agendas spreading gossip, can it?

Not really getting the comparison. The coverage on Meghan is often racist and misogynistic in tone. As far as I know, neither Meltzer nor Alvarez have said they hate Punk on a cellular level and suggested he used vivid bedroom promises to win Tony Khan over.

As far as I can tell their reporting basically reveals him to be a bit of knob who is detrimental to AEW. Which we know is at least partially true because the original incident that really started this was Punk publicly revealing himself as a knob at a press conference.

And yeah, their content does come from wrestlers with agendas spreading gossip but again, Punk openly spread backstage gossip at a press conference.

Tell me when I'm telling lies.

Yeah, you're not getting the comparison. I'm saying that just like those gossip mags seem to thrive and live on spreading rumours and bullshit about Harry and Meghan, you have to think that Meltzer and Alvarez (along with the plethora of Facebook wrestling groups) are loving the fact that any kind of report involving Punk is pulling in the clicks and interactions from both sides of the AEW Elite/Punk divide. That's why the guy can't take a shit without someone sending a full report to Meltzer, commenting on how the smell upset Wardlow or something.

As unlikable as Punk is, he can't seem to do anything right in the eyes of some. Christ, even when he supports worthwhile causes, donating all proceeds from the merchandise he's selling, which is quite considerable if the numbers from PWT is to be believed, there's people saying he's just jumping on the bandwagon, or that he doesn't mention the cause every week so he must be at it.

If he did turn around tomorrow and quit, disappearing from the industry to watch hockey and hang out with Larry, the likes of Meltzer and similar "reporters" would see a fairly sizeable dip in traffic I reckon.

Just like those gossip mags thrive on Harry and Meghan stories would suffer a fairly sizeable drop in traffic and sales if the couple actually did want privacy and dropped out of sight.

I agree w most of this.

Sadly conflict sells. Punk donating to good causes simply doesn't get eyeballs. Because few care about reading good things. They want to read about drama and misery. It's why vile media like The Sun and Mail sell hundreds of thousands of copies a day. Because it sells. We as a society need to stop feeding the beast that is misery porn  but we won't.

Personally I find him a whinging pain in the arse and at the same time he does have heart and cares about things happening around him. It's nice to see a wrestler support lgbt rights, given the businesses history of homphobia.

As for bandwagon jumping, that's alot of resources taken for something he'd get nearly no benefit from. If he banged on about causes all the time it's get tedious quick. I say that as someone in the lgbt community..less is more sometimes.

Punk needs to zip it and just do his job without any drama or fuss. Don't rock the boat or get involved w anyone. I suspect that he thrives on the drama though.

After they had been out scooped (again) Bryan Alvarez tweeted that Miro and Punk had got into too.

Which was quickly dismissed by everyone as "bants" between the two.

Meltzer and Alvarez haven't been relevant or accurate ever since they tied their mast fully to the Elite and were no longer impartial.

Then you’re asking him to be someone he’s not. Being a belligerent, self-righteous knob who won’t shut up and never knows how to pick his fights and when to leave things alone is a lot of what got him noticed in the first place and what much of the last 20 years of his career/legacy has been built on. Take that away and he wouldn’t be CM Punk, he’d be just another wrestler.

I've never so much had a problem with Big Dave, he's a great wrestling historian and everyone has their likes and dislikes, he's just very serious and dedicated to his.

However..... the whole CM Punk/Jack Perry altercation sums up what's wrong with his 'journalism' and wrestling 'journalism' as a whole. As soon as it happened two completely contradictory version of events appeared. One of Punk slightly instigating and one Perry. "This may have happened, however this may have happened" blah blah blah.

Now we've got a third of version of events which an unnamed random source cites Punk as 100% aggressor. It's just the usual complete bullshit conjecture where people find a story that make their favourites seem good and stick to that. The dirt sheets might as well say, we don't know what happened, it's anyone's guess.

Wrestling journalism is just fans gossiping, speculating and throwing out support for their favourites, no less than what we've always done on fan forums and message boards.
