Members SuperBacon Posted October 2, 2025 Members Posted October 2, 2025 Barrymore gets a chippy tea. All looks cracking, although saveloy is too small and I can't comment on the fish as I dont eat it, but £5.20 for a large chips? That's dearer than down here, and I thought Hampshire was expensive! Just Some Guy Posted October 4, 2025 Posted October 4, 2025 Have just been for dinner (in the northern sense) to No1 in Cromer. We were surprised to find that it is run by celebrity chef Galton Blackiston, having been to his restaurant the day before (see the Finer Dining thread). I ordered cod & chips while Just Some Girl had plaice. Was a bit taken aback that you could get a bread roll but no sliced bread. Bread roll and pickled egg duly added to order. Out come what seem to be two deep fried whales on a mountain made of chips. There is no sacrifice of quality for quantity though. We both thoroughly enjoyed but couldn't finish the portion. Only complaint from me was that the bread roll was cut funny. There was less top than bottom if you see what I mean. Like the restaurant the previous day, lovely staff. Quote
Paid Members Lion_of_the_Midlands Posted October 5, 2025 Paid Members Posted October 5, 2025 Well no picture of the purchases because they were very average as it was very busy, but the events in the chip shop were not the usual. The chippy I went to is opposite a pub that has some flat roof, so you know what sort of pub it is. Anyway I was sitting waiting for my order and I see three people dressed as clowns leave the pub and head towards the chippy. They come in and they are absolutely hammered. They eventually order their food and are stood waiting. The chippy woman calls out my order so I stand up to get it, but I didn't realise that one of the clowns was leaning against the back of my chair, so when I stand up he no longer has my weight to balance him and he goes down like he's been shot, and hits the floor hard, Which made his friends laugh a lot and the people in the busy shop didn't know which way to look. Anyway his friends help him up and I get my order and go to leave, but they have missed one of my orders off so I have to sit back down and wait. At this point the chippy owner asks the three clowns to wait outside and while they are not happy they do go outside. A couple of minutes later my order is done and I walk out to go to my car. Its about a 30 second walk to the car. I get in and the car park is one way so I drive round to get out. As I'm driving out the clowns are coming out of the chippy, eating their chips when out of the corner of my eye I see one of them fall over face first into his chips. At this point I'm absolutely howling with laughter as I drive away. When I got home and unwrapped everyone's tea they'd given me an extra battered jumbo sausage, which was a treat for both me and the dog, though he didn't like the batter. Quote

Sounds a bit like how the opening to Broken Sword would've been if they'd decided to set it somewhere other than Paris. "Lincolnshire in the fall... " Quote
davertfnewman Posted October 5, 2025 Posted October 5, 2025 Either the clowns were pissed up lads on the tail end of a stag do or there's flashing red light blinking somewhere. Reminds me of when I worked at Blockbuster years ago, two lads came up the counter to rent a game. The one went for his wallet and didn't appear to have it, so asked his mate, who was carrying stuff, if he could sub him. The other lad, to go for his wallet, put a tub full of Vaseline on the counter out of his one hand and a cucumber out of the other. I'm still not sure if I was being recorded for some show to see my reaction, but as they walked out I said to my colleague that who needs to rent anything when you can have fun like that. Quote
cobra_gordo Posted October 6, 2025 Posted October 6, 2025 Had the bleakest chippy tea I've had in a while from Aphrodite's in Rotherham. Card machine was broken which makes me think they'd been quiet and not sold much as the fish was somehow both soggy and rubbery, the chips were anaemic and the rissoles were the colour of David Dickinson after a 12 hour sunbed session. Only thing that was good was the steak pie which they put in fresh. Still, was a better option than cooking considering how hungover me and my wife were. Shame though as they're normally spot on there. Quote

Having told this to a few people over the weekend it turns out that the one who fell over has dressed up as a clown a number of times over the years. I was told a story about him that I frankly don't believe involving him chasing two people of short stature who were on mobility scooters. This is Lincolnshire so I'm not saying that it didn't happen but I'm sceptical. Quote

Members SuperBacon Posted February 14 Members Posted February 14 Alwsys a massive panic when you move and have to choose a new chippy, but the nearest one to me was a decent first go. its a crap photo but an impressive sized portion for a small chips (£2.50) but a bit more than I like to pay for a dogs dick (£2.70!!!) but it was decent (they are what they are, I'm not expecting much) Few scraps of batter in the chips as well which is always welcome, but I have to tell you they do pizzas and kebabs, so you know. But there is probably 4 million chippies in and around Southampton and the areas, and I'm still only 15 minutes from the old village chippy so we'll have a bit of a tour as the weather gets warmer. Had a battered sausage from here last night and haven't left the bog since. Alarm bells should've been ringing when the batter was like a boot to chew through, and genuinely unable to eat it. Chips were fine, but honestly I've emptied myself good and proper about 200 times in the last 16 hours. I've written every post on here (and work email) from the bog today. What an image for you all. Absolute cunts. Quote
