Pretty much as @Lion_of_the_Midlandsit's sliced potatoes, butter, and onions in a pie. Nowhere near as bad as it sounds. It's also known as a "Friday pie" as it would serve as an alternative to a traditional meat pie for catholics. @The King of Old School John Bulls are getting rarer and rarer round here as well. There's only Wellington Street Chippy I think still does them now. Bryan Street used to do them. They do something called an "Abba-dabba" there now, which is two dabs (potato fritters) with cheese between them coated in batter and deep dried. On a barm cake, obviously. Holly Tree Chippy still do them too, that tends to be my go to for a Chippy around here. "Bigger Fish to Fry" do them too which is up on the Manxman estate. Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted July 20 Paid Members Posted July 20 I've lived 2 minutes walk from a chippy since December and haven't once tried it yet. Quote

westlondonmist Posted July 21 Posted July 21 That John Bull sounds delightful. @Jazzy Gis the barm inside the batter or is it a deep fried treat buttie? Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted July 21 Paid Members Posted July 21 John Bulls are delicious. @westlondonmistI'm sure if you asked them nicely they'd deep fry the barm for you as well. Quote
Paid Members Carbomb Posted July 21 Paid Members Posted July 21 I heard about John Bulls from Athletico Mince - would very much like to try one one day. They also mentioned the Beanie up in Sunderland, and the Bean Rounder in Middlesbrough. Both sound superb too. Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted July 21 Paid Members Posted July 21 They used to do bean rounders at Netto, and mince meat rounders which were ostensibly John Bulls. Quote
Paid Members BigJag Posted July 22 Paid Members Posted July 22 Spending the weekend in Bridlington. Would anyone have recommendations for a chippy tea? Quote

MungoChutney Posted July 22 Posted July 22 (edited) Edit: had a great chippy, but you'll need to take my word for it until Flickr starts working again. Edited July 22 by MungoChutney It's not invisible but the usual method for inserting images didn't work :( Quote
Paid Members Onyx2 Posted July 31 Author Paid Members Posted July 31 The thing I like most about a chippy tea is the seemingly endless regional variations. And even better is finding one I've not heard before! Especially with the suspicion that it's horseshit. Apparently 'black gravy' is a thing. Possibly Chinese derivation? Salford? Any Manc gastronauts confirm? Quote

Any Manc gastronauts confirm? I’ve definitely had Chinese gravy maybe not as tar-black as that but definitely a lot darker than normal gravy, but we’re talking mid 2000s. Quote
RIDDUM_N_STYLE Posted July 31 Posted July 31 My local chippy used to do gravy that black in its original run, it got destroyed by a low life smashing through it with their stolen car while being chased by police, but since it reopened a couple of years back the family recipe must have changed because while still thick and meaty, it’s a lot lighter Quote
