Braved the elements yesterday to trek to the headland to visit the highly-rated Verrils. Was finally offered scraps at an chippy upon ordering which I dutifully accepted. Chips could have been crisper but they were hot and really tasty, great potato and I think fried in dripping. Fish had great crisp but light batter, not greasy at all, and so flavourful I nearly forgot it was cod instead of haddock (which they don’t do). And a hefty fish too. £12.50. Unbelievable, Jeff. They're a chain but not sure how widespread they are beyond Scotland. This was their new munch box. A crispy fish sandwich, two pieces of spicy fish, two hot wings, two chicken tenders, chips and curry sauce. We'll ignore the salad since they ignored my order note not to include it. Was bloody marvellous tbh but an evolution of the chippy tea I'm not sure this forum, let alone the country, is ready for. Quote

Merzbow Posted April 29 Posted April 29 There's a Mother Hubbard's in Cov and I've given it a few tries, it's far too expensive compared to most chippys here and was pretty awful when it opened but the last time or two I went the chips were genuinely great. I’ve not tried Mother Hubbards near me as it’s too close to Kingfisher and… if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I know there’s non-traditional chippy items involved but it’s clearly a proper chippy with proper chips that just added extra bits for me, so crack on, no gatekeeping here. Be like telling me the pub I helped run wasn’t a real pub because as well as lager, cask ales, Guinness etc we also sold the occasional Kinder Egg. Quote

Our regular, Yorkshire Fisheries, doesn’t open on Sundays. No wonder people are voting Reform! Anyway, I offered up Bentleys as an alternative because “it gets great reviews” (which I took from this thread) and we went at opening. Staff were lovely and brought it out to us because we wanted to sit outside with the dog and brought salt and vinegar to the bench so we could apply it to our own taste. Medium haddock and regular chips twice, curry sauce, £21.90. Very nice it was too, and if this was a medium then the large fish must be a danger to shipping. Personally I prefer haddock or rock but I think a lot of people are fairly well 'know what they like and like what they know' and won't change. I love fish and seafood so if some weird and wonderful fish appeared on the menu then I'd be open to giving it a try if it meant saving a few quid. Quote

Which meant fishy fishy, so we headed to By The Sea where “head chef Ovi” (according to the website) actually took our order 5 minutes before they were meant to open, for the freshest scran possible; It was the only photo anyone managed in the scurry to perfect seating arrangements, scare off gulls and get it eaten hot. Fish was meaty sweet and delicious, chips were crisp and fat enough for me to call them chips, usually they’ve been perilously close to being fries in terms of width:length ratio. Haddock n chips twice, 2x tartare for Mrs raid and raids-in-law, aioli for me. Pricy but worth it - £30.25 Probably Sanders today. Quote
