Got to Cornwall on the Saturday and headed to St Ives on the Sunday for a By The Sea visit, haddock/chips with curry for me and tartare for her, on a bench surrounded by gulls and using the cutlery we carry around permanently in the backpack "just in case." She raved over the fish, because she prefers it "fishy" and I prefer it "sweet and meaty" and the chips were crisp and excellent if a little thin for my liking. Her tartare sauce she enjoyed but to be honest the usually cracking curry sauce tasted a little strange.. I think "soapy" is the word I would reach for. By the Tuesday we were already in the mood for more so headed down to our new favourite in Hayle, Sanders, when after a rainy day on the beach we realised we could get the sand off our toes and get down just in time for lunchtime opening. I'd talked about scampi because its been ages since Mrs raid had any, and to my shock on top of this and allowing me to have both curry sauce AND try their onion rings, she was hungry enough to go for fish and chips each - plaice to try and a haddock. Never dreamed we'd end up with a £40 chippy tea but there we have it. Plaice was too subtle for me but she loved it, haddock/scampi/chips all fantastic and their onion rings were a revelation. They even threw some free Heinz tartare sachets in with the scampi - not really needed because she's brought Heinz new "fish and chip sauce" with her because she's borderline addicted. We were stuffed to the point of feeling sick.... .... but the next day despite having a few pasties in Newquay we were hungry again by the time we were heading back to the park and were timing it perfectly for the first "click and collect" of their afternoon opening hours. And we ordered nearly as much - my haddock was two small ones instead of one big fish, and fuck me was this still outstanding eating and reasonably priced for portions. ... upon me finally getting my offer letter on the Friday, we weren't quite hungry enough for another chippy feast but did then smash 3 pasties between us in celebration. Not related to the Scarborough Mother Hubbards that remains the best fish and chips in the Universe, but a franchise chain that I think originated in Hull. Cooked fresh to order so I was hopeful. Thinnest scallops I’ve ever had, more like bastard crisp. Fish was a bit dry, batter had crispy chunks but a bit moist round the fish. Chips average, curry sauce had a nice tang. Won’t be bothering again, @Devon Malcolm don’t bother. Quote

The best chippy along the A6 is Fishers near Sainsbury's in Hazel Grove, if you're prepared to go that far. In other local chippy news, doesn't look as though the Sea Shell is reopening as a chippy. Looks like they're knocking it through to be a house. One of the country's oldest gone, a great shame. Quote

Just wish Buttons was still around, technically not a chippy but a greasy spoon that'd do trays of real decent chips and curry sauce. Quote

Will try Fishers next time I’m down that way. Paying weekly visits to Element Games at the moment as I’ve got a wargaming itch at the moment, so it’s just down the road from there. Quote
