We were so looking forward to it we ended up having three fish mains between two pair of us. Haddock was awesome as ever, I forgot how great the scampi was and thankfully being Polish the wife/in-laws always keep lemon in the fridge for their tea which made it next level. Wife wanted to try chippy gravy for ages so we had that too - it was really good gravy but for me that’s “meat and vegetables” not fried stuff from the chippy. Haddock and large chips twice, scampi, gravy, £41 exact. Excellent. Hopefully not the last chapter. EDIT - since posting it’s been made clear to me it won’t be. Obviously the first thing I did was google “ukff chippy tea Llandudno” and see that@air_raid went to Barnacles. So we went there and I’ve got to be honest, I was a bit disappointed. While the fish and chips were tasty, I thought the portion was very stingey. Especially as it was £13.50 for what was apparently a large portion of chips. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by the chippy at the Grand Pier at Aberystwyth which is still my gold standard, but there and the majority of chippys I usually go to, a large portion would be double that and that fish would have been only slightly larger than a mini fish. Just means I’ll have to have another tomorrow to find somewhere better! Quote

Fond memories however of fish and chips n curry sauce from Central Fish Bar just round the corner from The Mill where the curry sauce was more like actual chicken curry, turmeric yellow with shredded meat throughout, and the one at the top of the hill behind Crwt Mawr digs where the grumpy woman would serve you chips with amazing battered sausage with half inch thick batter and thick brown curry loaded with spice and fruitiness. This time, haddock n chips twice and DOUBLE scampi, £49. Nothing I could add to the previous review of similar feast. Scrumptious. We were meant to go to Kingfisher yesterday but were too tired and considered Llandudno today but are still too tired, hopefully one or the other happens Saturday before the oldies fly back next Sunday. It's a bit early I know, but for me over the last couple of years when I've been in Whitby, I've always gone to Magpie Cafe (eating in and take away). Portions have been pretty generous, tasty and not horribly expensive either Quote

I cannot urge you enough to stay away from Mister Chips right at the top of the pier opposite the old church. Had high hopes from reading a few reviews before we went in March and it was fucking awful. Can't speak for the fish, but the chips and battered sausage we had was grim. Rossman Posted June 1 Posted June 1 We went to Whitby as part of our honeymoon 5 years ago, this September. One lunch we went to The Marine Bar along the front. Not as cheap as others, but it's sit in and a lovely restaurant so good idea to book. Lovely fresh fish and crispy chips. Wife had half a lobster and that tasted great too. Also went to a place called Trenchers which was opposite the railway station next to the big roundabout that takes you to the front. At tea time as we would walk into the town for dinner, it always had a massive queue outside. Everyone was raving about it. Turns out, you can't reserve a table, you've got to queue up. Half an hour we must have queued on our last night. When you get to the front, they give you a menu to look at. Think I had fish pie and it was crap. Bland, tasteless, not worth the wait at all. On the first night when we got there it was teeming it down and dark. I stood under some scaffolding eating takeaway fish & chips from Papa's. They had a blue plaque outside saying they were BBC voted Britain's best takeaway. It wasn't bad, but hardly amazing. It got converted into a Wendy's a few years back. But Papa's look to be going back in there soon. Quote

FOURTH ANNUAL OLD AGE IN-LAWS CHIPPY TOUR, PART 5 (FINALE) So Saturday morning during a Tesco run I rang Kingfisher knowing they were open at 9.30 but not knowing if that was only breakfast or they were doing fish and chips, which they were. We were there before 11 . Cod n chips 3 times between 4 humans plus the Irish curry sauce which is the best of the 3 they do - £30.20. I’m tempted to say £9.40 for a regular cod n chips is good in todays market but the flip side is that they were smaller than any of haddock we had this year. Very tasty either way and worthwhile end chapter. Magpie keeps winning awards/making shortlists too, I was already well aware of it. Not to sound too much of a tourist but staying at the caravan park and having to drive into Whitby proper anyway, I might have to steer clear of anything not too central. But plenty of time to plan.
