Chippy Tea

The new village chippy is very decent. Excuse the poor quality photo (lighting is crap in the flat) but this was a small portion (lots of chips had been already eaten out of the paper) and was massive.

The kids shared a large cheesy chips that could've fed 4, and someone in there ordered the 'family size' which is about £6, which honestly could've easily fed 6 or so. They just kept shovelling in a bag, it was mad.

Although, I'm getting sick of sharing mine with my eldest, so I might finally tell her what's in a saveloy to put her off as I'm not paying for two.

Minor criticisms would be: not nearly enough salt and vinegar on the chips, and the cans are £1.30 and a poor selection. 8/10, room for improvement.

Salt and vinegar should be available at the counter for the customer to apply. That being said, don't apply vinegar if you're just bringing them home IMO.

The proper chippy tea is the one thing you can’t replicate properly when you go to the dark side and you stop eating meat and dairy.

Whenever the wife wants chippy, I end up just getting chips and doing just loads of bread and (dairy free) butter.

Birthday Saturday. Took mixed donner/chicken kebab meat, battered chips (Mrs raid loves them) with mild chilli augmented with Polish garlic sauce in the end, plus a Kings Special because she’d yet to try their cod or curry sauce. Delighted to see both the chip portion and “mini cod” are much larger than I remembered. Plus a battered sausage as Mrs raid hadn’t experienced one and I’ve been dying to force her to get one for ages (and they had no spring rolls ready). She loved everything.

For completion mama raid and fella took mixed chicken/chicken tikka kebab with hot chilli and garlic Mayo and a bag of mixed plain/battered chips. All in all 100% successful trip.

I’ve had a change of heart about chippys selling kebabs and pizza since having a chat with a chippy owner who started doing them.  His business was plummeting due to the number of kebab shops opening in the area, parents getting g a take away and just go8 g with what the kids wanted which was invariably pizza or kebab.  Doing all 3 has taken him past where he was before the plummet as it’s a one stop shop now where everyone is catered for.  Stopped him closing down.

The best chippy in Chorlton is Baths Supper Bar. It used to be ran and owned by a Chinese family. A few years back the guy who owns Beech Road chippy took it over. Beech Road has one of those “English Chippy” signs and Baths Supper Bar has a sign saying how their kebabs aren’t halal. Obviously to the centrist libs of Chorlton this means he’s a racists. I like to think that instead of complying with food labelling regulations he’s just sick of “Woke Chippys” and just wants his country back.

Can’t believe we’re still here but saying a chippy isn’t a chippy because it sells kebabs as well as fish and pukka pies, is up there with saying a petrol station isn’t a petrol station if it sells you screen wash as well as Castrol in terms of “where do you get this contemptible bollocks?”

Just back from a week in Great Yarmouth and cannot fault Grellys along the seafront. Cooked in beef dripping and lovely fresh fish battered superbly. Seaside main special of 2 large fish and 2 chips for £14. Can't beat it. Just wished I'd taken a pic as it was spot on....

 

Went back 2 more times while we were there and it will be a regular visit whenever we go there again

I have a friend who ran one, and was looking to buy another, but the cost of everything means the margins are so small, it really isn't worth it for him.

The situation in Ukraine/Russia has sent the price of fish sky high as well, he was telling me.
