Apologies if this is common knowledge but I have just found out this is not WWE/WWF's first show in Saudi Arabia, they had a show in Bahrain back in 1997 headlined by Bret Hart and The Undertaker I believe.

Bahrain is a country and not a city in Saudi Arabia

Eh? That's a completely different country.

All the same though, innit... :/

Was this part of the tour where Vader got detained for saying fuck on a talk show as he roughed up the host?

Then they had to get the American ambassador in when he got pissed while under house arrest at the hotel and kicked off in the lobby

I'm taking it with a huge pinch of salt because it was on one of the NEWZ sites, but I see there's a story doing the rounds that WWE are getting between $100-$200 million dollars for putting the show on, before merch etc. That can't be right can it? Have to assume that's for the 10 years overall, rather than just this show?

If it is accurate, I can see why they were willing to risk the backlash for doing a show in a place where women wouldn't be able to compete. That would set them up for a good while I imagine!

Basically, this is the first time in what must be decades that WWE are doing a bought show. The Saudis are probably the only lot on the planet rich and profligate enough to afford one.

What examples are there of them doing bought shows before? Or was it more commonplace back in the day? Interested to know/read about these.

To be honest, I don't know; I was making a quick assumption about the US industry that might not even be correct. But if I were to hazard a guess that the US industry was once similar to the UK's in this regard, I'd have thought that, if there was ever a case of them doing bought shows, it would've been back in the 60s and 70s, under McMahon Snr., and maybe during the early years of Jnr.

I'm unsure about house shows (though I do think they have still happened in fairly recent history) but WrestleMania's 4, 5 and 9 were all partially bought shows. The casino paid a large amount of money in order to purchase a certain percentage of the tickets, which made WrestleMania 4 more profitable at the gate with roughly 17,000 attendees than the 78,000+ at WrestleMania 3.

I'd imagine it's happened a fair bit over the years though in some places that WWE don't run events that often.
