It's today then ... (Trump thread)

I went to bed last night pretty shook by what I was seeing. At that time most of the election day voting had been counted in the states where they don't do early counting. Seeing Florida go to Trump was real scary along with PA not looking good. I was expecting to wake up this morning seeing it a done deal for Trump.

Was however starting to feel more hopeful seeing a lot of the mail-in votes starting to be counted and swinging states back to Biden. Its a close one for sure.

Very shocking to me how close this is, given the reported high turnout I had thought that would result in more Biden votes but it seems like both sides pulled in additional voters. It's bonkers to me that it is this close and just highlights how fucking dumb people are.

Is this is all a predicator for the UK?

It definitely boggles my mind that anyone votes Republican. So many of them are just completely vile, smug, horrific villains . The Torys are cunts, no doubt, but the worst Tory isn't as bad as even a fairly average Republican official.

The US news media is definitely to blame for a large portion of this shite. Every time I've been to the US and tried to watch any of the news channels the way it's presented...it's just a nonstop loud toxic fear mongering assault on the brain.

I thought it was a stick on but only based on my idea of Florida being a massive retirement village, and the way he kept saying everything Biden did was socialism would’ve played well with the Cuban and Nicaraguan vote who want as much distance from that as possible.

Just spotted that the New York Times results shows you the percentage breakdown of the absentee votes so far (though Nevada doesn't appear a reliable figure.) That suggests Biden should end up taking Pennsylvania clearly if not comfortably, but being too far behind in North Carolina and Georgia.

Most likely outcome now appears to be Biden winning with 290 or 291 and then Trump having to decide if it's worth trying to pull off some court shenanigans in Pennsylvania and trying his luck with a recount in Wisconsin.

Nope, not a chance. Our own PM and his top bods are eugenicists who despise the poor. Their Covid strategy is essentially let the poor and vulnerable die. They are just as bad, if not worse. They just use more creative language to blanket their racism and classism.

I really hope your right!

It's going to rumble on for months though, isn't it? What strings is Trump clutching at that makes him think he would have a case to take it to the supreme court?

I've also being following on the NY Times site, John. It's an excellent view. Why haven't they called Arizona yet given the huge lead with over 98% of the votes counted? others called it hours ago, explaining Biden's 238 early this morning on FOX.

Ok yeah, fair enough.

Looks like it could all come down to Nevada.

I think a lot of the downcast reaction from a lot of people is the the polls suggested perhaps a clear cut landslide for Biden. However, realistically this was always the more likely route for Biden to win. The turnout for Biden is still utterly massive, its just the turnout for Trump is huge too!

There's one essential difference between American and English conservatism; Americans are very much of the "up by your bootstraps" mentality, where anyone theoretically can make something of themselves, so anyone in poverty is there because it's their fault (if they're a liberal or a minority) or because they haven't done the magic amount of work that transforms them into a millionaire overnight (if it's yourself), while English conservatism is predicated on a class system where poor people need to just know their place and recognise that their betters get to govern them by birthright, and any attempt at social mobility is to be deeply distrusted.

I would say that, for all the American right's talk of freedom and liberty, there actually is a more genuinely libertarian streak in most English Tories - plenty of them are regressive old arseholes, but few of them are actively trying to roll back reproductive rights or LGBT rights, and even fewer are claiming a God-given right to do so. We do seem to be gradually importing more and more of American right wing rhetoric and language, though, so I'm sure that's all to come, and that the Americanised trend of treating "liberalism" as if it's a personal and moral failing rather than a difference of opinion will continue unabated.

I have a slightly unhinged and unsubstantiated theory that, in having set Separation Of Church & State in stone early in their development, before having truly organically negotiated the role of religion in public life the way older countries had reckoned with for centuries, America ended up in a position where, despite being an ostensibly secular nation, the concepts of Church & State became utterly intertwined, rather than separated. In some respects that's evidenced in outright evangelical Christianity, but I think it's actually more apparent in ostensibly secular patriotism across all aspects of their political life. They don't see the Constitution or Bill of Rights as man-made documents, or in any way fallible, but as holy scripture - how often do you hear them refer to "God-given rights"? - while the flag, and the abstract notion of "America" stands in for God.

I think that pseudo-religious relationship with the idea of nationhood underpins so much of what's wrong about America, even moreso than their utter failure to reckon with their own history or political reality - in that respect, they're on pretty level footing with the English.

Huh? 😳 I literally haven't heard a peep from Hillary once since she lost the election.

It was more aimed at the hoards of Democrats who have spent 4 years saying Russia interfered, Claiming Trump was being backed by Putin, building up the Muller report, claiming Comey cost her it etc. It came down to the fact she ran a pretty shit campaign as she thought she only had to turn up. Her book is one long list of blame everyone but me. Its like a Jeremy Corbyn diary entry.

Anyway, was only a stupid throwaway line. I'm high on caffeine and CNN KEY ALERT announcements.
