UKFF'S TOP 50 FAVORITE TV DRAMAS

I thought Threads was possibly one of the funniest things I'd ever watched.

I too watched it at school in a large group, and we just ripped the piss out of it start to finish, like shouting 'Les' or 'Zack' when Battersby's or Dingle's actors appeared. Absolutely fell about with the bit with the sheep too.

That childish way of accepting what was being put in front of us has sort of stuck and I can not take it seriously, and strangely neither can my mates.

Re-watched it a couple of years ago, and admittidly it has not aged well. I think it was one of those things where you had to be there at the time. The fact that we knew fingers were hovering over buttons didn't help.

"Dear Frederick, thank you for your nice letter, but I am actually a U.S. Marine who was born to kill whereas clearly you have mistaken me for some sort of wine-sipping Communist dick-suck."

Generation Kill

Voted number 1? No.

What's it about?

Based on real events, a Rolling Stone columnist is embedded with a battalion of U.S. Marines during the first stages of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. This seven part mini-series follows the actions and personalities of marines who were thought of as the very tip of the spear into Iraq.

What do I think?

This was one of my picks. An amazing show. Dispelling the myth of the brave heroic selfless soldier, the soldiers in this were brought up on internet porn, rap music and Grand Theft Auto. At first they all come across as complete pricks but as the series goes on you grow to love them. Some of them are racist and hateful, some are just scared and dumb while others are good men trying to make the best of a bad situation. It's hardly action packed but there are some shocking moments of violence and brutality. But the best scenes are just when the four leads are sitting in the Humvee driving across Iraq chatting with eachother. The chemistry between Ray Person and 'The Iceman' is just pure magic.

What do you think?

"Generation Kill is one of only very few shows I made a point of catching each week it was on and I couldn't wait to see the next episode. A fascinating look at different sides of the U.S Military in the early 2000s. I loved the gritty feel, the characters, the dialogue, the banter, the emotion. A strong cast with strong performances throughout - Skarsgard in particular is absolutely tremendous. Some favourite moments being his story of his ex-girlfriend and best mate and when he pretends to be a plane. I only wish there was more of it to see."

"To make you a vampire they have to suck your blood. And then you have to suck their blood. It's like a whole big sucking thing."

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Voted number 1? No.

What's it about?

Sarah Michelle Gellar is Buffy, a highschool girl chosen by fate to be a Slayer. A young girl destined to battle vampires, demons and the forces of darkness. And the town she's just moved to happens to be exactly above a Hellmouth, a gateway to the realms of evil. Chuck in some issue with highschool, friendship and troubled boyfriends and you've got one of the most iconic characters of the '90s. This show had a huge cultural impact at the time and still has a large following to do this day.

What do you say?

"My list is Whedon-heavy, but Buffy, for all its faults (Dawn) was the first drama (in the sense of the term defined by this thread) to grab me and grip me and keep me watching and watching from start to finish. I haven't re-watched it since it ended despite owning the complete boxset, but in my head I remember it being my favourite thing ever at the time."

"OK, a bit of Wheddon love (fuck Firefly in it's ass!) The longer Buffy went, the better it got. The show kept at a high pace throughout and never got stale. The last 2 seasons especially lead to a cracking climax and ended everything in a cracking fashion."

"That grandson of yours could wreck the empire just by strolling through it."

I, Claudius

Voted number 1? No.

What's it about?

One of the most successful BBC dramas of all time, this show follows the history of Rome and the rise of Emperor Claudius. Starring English greats such as Derek Jacobi, Brian Blessed and John Hurt, this is 12 episodes of plotting, backstabbing and death.

What do you say?

"A series of rampant madness. The idea of serialising these incredible books just wouldn't be undertaken nowadays, but the Beeb did it simply by casting every top stage actor who was available and filming it all on a tiny set in a tv studio. So this is all about the acting. Tony Soprano may be a great performance, but if you want to see undercurrents of madness and egomania, just watch Brian Blessed. And he's only in the first 2 episodes!"

I think so as well. I never saw Threads as a child. I bought it on DVD at some point in the last decade, after Charlie Brooker was banging on about it in Screenwipe, and just didn't get into it at all.

Yay! Generation Kill! Did anyone else vote for it besides me and you LaGoosh?

If you haven't seen it, seriously recommend you all check it out. Such a great show and Goosh is right, it's totally built on the relationships and camaraderie between the 4 leads and he's also right about starting off thinking they are all right pricks (except Fruity-Rudy...'we love you Fruity-Rudy!'). Indeed, Ray in particular I was ready to despise from the first episode but a couple more in and I bloody loved him. His bromance with Iceman is a beautiful thing. Something I forgot to mention in my write up was any scene where all the guys break into song together are wonderful and will leave you with a great big fuck off grin on you face. Seriously, its only 7 episodes so check this shit out. Brilliant show, I love it.

Yep, it got other votes.

David Simon is an executive producer and script writer but as it was all based off Evan Wright's book (which is a fantastic read) and Wright went over all the scripts so I don't think Simon deserves all the credit.

One of my favorite lines from the whole thing:

"When this war is over I'm gonna' go home and eat the fuck out of my girlfriends pussy"

You wouldn't get that in Saving Private Ryan.

I've never even heard of Generation Kill before. I'll check it out.

Astonished that Buffy is relatively low, there's been plenty of UKFF Buffyaholics over the years. Currently machinegunning the whole thing for the fourth time on Netflix, and the writing is so consistently sharp.
